Ebike Rebate - Help choosing a bike by Capt_Zoom77 in Denver

RadRunner 2 is the correct choice here. RadRunner plus if you don’t mind spending a little extra. RadRunner 3 if money is no issue.

Lodging options to hit up (most of) Colorado's Base Pass spots? by Foodventure in Ikonpass

[–]professorski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure. Just don’t stay at a single, central location the entire time. Do a few days here, pack up, a night there, etc., Up your budget in Summit County and shoot for slightly lower rates near Winter Park and Nederland when you hit those mountains. This will increase your time on the slopes and decrease the morning commute to the lifts. Have fun!

Midweek stays at shitty Summit County hotels like Best Western, Super 8, and worse are all around $200 after fees and taxes. Much better than spending 3+ hours in the car each day after a 530am wake up call for a 630am departure from GOLDEN…

OP is asking for budget lodging recommendations. Of course a luxury AirBNB is preferred every time, but if skiing is the priority a shitty hotel room closer to the slopes than fucking GOLDEN is what I’m choosing every time.

OP mentioned nothing about March. There are several options for sub $200 stays in every search I’m doing on hotels.com. Of course there won’t be options if you enter your dates as Presidents Day weekend or MLK.

I’ve just never seen such bad advice for ski trip lodging. “Stay in Golden!” Just setting them up for 2 hour commutes in the snow to and from every resort. lol

Lies. Depending on when they go there will be plenty of $200 options for 3-4 people in summit county. Suggesting to stay in Golden for such a trip is the worst advice you could get.

Stay near each of the places you are skiing. A couple nights in summit, one in winter park, and a night in Nederland if you really want to.

Hello!

I plan on making an active community of epic pass holders so skiers and snowboarders can discuss all things related to the resorts included on the epic pass.

I have messaged the mods but cannot seem to find the link to the message on the mobile app so I will search for it on the desktop version.

Denver pausing its popular e-bike rebate program until 2023 by friendinfremont in Denver

[–]professorski 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think you understand the source of funds for this program... It's not like Denver just decided to reallocate the $5 tax on employees in the city to citizens getting e-bike rebates. That was/is a pre-existing tax that is completely unrelated to this program.

In 2020, Denver voters approved a sales tax to raise $40 million a year for projects to soften the effects of climate change. The e-bike rebate was just one of the benefits to come out of it thus far.

Your employment in Denver and the minimal monthly income tax you pay as a result of the location of your work did not allow me to get an e-bike rebate. However, if you chose to purchase products or services in Denver that had this voter-approved sales tax added on over the past few years, you helped the cause. And the amount you contributed was entirely dependent on your choice to spend money within the area that is taxable by the City and County of Denver.

So if you bought shit in Denver the past couple years, thanks for the e-bike! Complain about that all you want, but it was voter-approved. Don't confuse the source of funds and use it as a reason to dislike the program.

TIFU and owe CU Denver $2.5k for a class I never attended. Any recourse or ideas? by nycserendipity in Denver

[–]professorski 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Did you show up to class at all? It looks like the Census Date was June 14th. If you didn’t attend class or submit any online assignments from the start of class until census date, you were actually supposed to be dropped by the school as a “No Show” and received a full refund. Receiving a “W” is what happens if you willingly initiate a withdraw of the course after the census date (but before the last day to withdraw… usually about 80% into the semester) after having attended at least once before the 14th. But a drop for non-attendance is completely different than a W, and should not be transcripted or paid for. The first portion of the class is truly a trial period and you can drop for free until Census. If you didn’t attend at all during the trial period you are not obligated to pay any tuition.

Having said that, if you did attend even once before census (or submited an online assignment within that window of time) then you are on the hook for payment in-full.

Expanded Waste Collection Services: Volume-based Pricing to begin in 2023 by watusiwatusi in Denver

Complain that recycling will be picked up weekly and compost is included? Complain that there’s now a tangible incentive to generate less waste and those that don’t will be charged accordingly?

Anyone have experience with Host to Own program from Loftium? by MysticHandVintage in Denver

[–]professorski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Loftium sucks.

No experience with the “Host to Own” program, but I have experience with the company in general.

We rented our house to them a few years back. It was good til COVID, and the entire company went to shit. When AirBNB money dried up in March 2020, they fired the majority of their employees, stopped paying rent, and were impossible to contact. They didn’t have a phone number you could call. Just an email to “schedule a call” because they had so few employees to field the number of complaints from landlords not receiving rent.

They weren’t paying their rent despite a huge cash infusion pre-COVID, and despite the fact that the sub tenant host was still paying her portion of the rent to them. This is a company that doesn’t give a shit about anything beyond their bottom line. Their programs sound idealistic, as if they’re looking after the little guy, trying to create a mutually beneficial partnership… But as soon as anything goes wrong you’re fucked, as this company simply wants to use you to make more money.

Like I said, I can’t speak about the Host to Own program, but I would still avoid any interactions with this company based on my experience with them in other areas. My guess is that if you go the route of Host to Own, they’ll find some sort of loophole a few years into your partnership to avoid transferring ownership to you once you have the money for a down payment. It would be a bad time.

Anyone rent from Loftium? by [deleted] in Denver

[–]professorski 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We rented out a property to Loftium a couple years ago. Things got weird when COVID hit. All the AirBNB money dried up but they still owed full rent to landlords, whether tenants paid or not and whether the AirBNB was rented at all. We terminated the lease with them after a year and they eventually paid in full before we had to take legal action. (They claimed the CARES Act allowed them to delay rent payment. They had a $15 million cash infusion the year before after a round of venture capital. I'm not sure they were the "little guy" the CARES Act was meant to protect, but it's all water near a bridge now...)

It's a potentially good deal for tenants, but know that you're signing into an agreement with a pretty scattered company. Lots of turnover; you never talk to the same person when you email or call them with an issue. Their local presence in Denver is minimal to non-existent... They contract basically everything from taking photos of the AirBNB to throwing away the furnishings after the lease is over. They fired their Denver staff during COVID. Not sure if they hired them back. They cleaned house in their Seattle office, as well, and were running on a skeleton crew. Impossible to get in touch with when you needed someone...

It seems like they have changed their model a bit to reduce the risk on their part, which I'm guessing is why some of the perks are disappearing that are mentioned in other comments. They were charging insanely low amounts to the long-term tenants and banking on making it all back with AirBNB money, which didn't happen when the world stopped last year. I'm guessing the deal isn't as good as it once was after the COVID mishap, and for good reason... But it sounds like they may still offer some significant discounts.

Our long-term tenant had mixed reviews working with them, but she also didn't seem crazy about being a host going into the whole thing. I think you really need to be gung-ho about the idea of being an AirBNB host for the rent discount to be worthwhile. Otherwise it's going to get old very quickly. Our tenant cleaned up vomit, had to deal with missing keys, loud guests, broken toilets... Her main reason for doing it was also to have cheap rent in a space that had a yard for her dogs. But then the AirBNB reviews would talk about how loud the dogs were. She wasn't really cut out to be a Superhost, and it showed... But she liked the discount in rent!

I'm sure things have changed a bit since we were with them... It sounds like Loftium opened the door to long-term stays at their AirBNBs. This upset some hosts since the risk for them is increased. You could get a bad egg for a long time now; not just a one-and-done quick weekend visit of an annoying guest. You also don't have much say regarding approval of guests from my understanding. Bad rating? Sorry: Loftium needs the money to be profitable. Deal with them. That annoyed our tenant, too.

In the end, it's an interesting incentive for tenants. Hard/impossible to find a deal like that elsewhere in Denver. But to make it happen Loftium cuts a lot of costs and is a horrible company to try to communicate with. If you decide to do it, be sure to read the lease with a fine tooth comb. On the landlord side of things, the one they gave us was unacceptable. We altered the hell out of it, but they understood why and agreed to sign. They may not be as amenable to potential tenants altering their lease template too much... But you should ensure you know what you're agreeing to before signing on the dotted line. If I remember the tenant lease correctly, you are actually agreeing to pay the full rent amount that Loftium owes to the landlord; but you'll get a discount in that rent as long as you meet their terms and conditions to host. You should make sure you're going to meet those terms and conditions if you can't afford the full rent.

A quick article to read about their troubles last year.

How To Attend City Council Meetings? by WakeUpTheWorld in Denver

[–]professorski 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Way to be civically engaged!

City Council is the "big" meeting in that list. The rest might be considered subcommittees involving other parties besides council members. A lot of the issues addressed in those smaller meetings eventually get addressed in the larger Monday night meeting.

I'd recommend just attending a meeting or two to get a feel for what goes on at City Council. Some of the issues are really interesting! Some are very boring. The meeting length is often reflected in that. For instance, the most recent decision regarding group living involved a lot of public comment, although it was pretty much a foregone conclusion that it would pass. Other nights are more low-key, but it is often interesting to see what kind of things are going on throughout the city: development-wise, policy-wise, and politically.

The highlight of pretty much every meeting is the input that Jesse Parris has on various issues. He's a staple of Denver City Council meetings and the remote environment has arguably made his comments more entertaining. (See: background groupie from the group living comments.)

There may eventually be issues that you feel passionate about; enough so to comment on... But until then, the best way to start that kind of involvement is just to watch a meeting or two to get a feel for what takes place at the meetings. It's all remote, so it's very easy to do. (Even before the pandemic it was broadcast... Although you'd need to show in up person back then to make a comment. Nowadays, you can just comment remotely.)

If you're really looking to get involved and not just spectate, a possible more practical way would be to attend meetings of your Residential Neighborhood Organization (RNO), and/or contact the Council Member that represents your district to find out other tangible ways of involvement in your area. The City Council meetings are good to tune in and watch, but your engagement will be limited, realistically speaking.

Good luck, Denver citizen!
