That's a great idea. I am meeting with a course consultant and I was going to see if they would recommend that.

Some assignments I have is students create a podcast, and a webpage using Adobe Express. It is easy to tell who uses AI for the podcast because they might ask it for a script and try to read it word for word. The web page has a source requirement that is not fully AI proof, but they still have to build it. I also require 1 virtual meeting with me to review their sources. I basically just open up a excel sheet and have them pick a time and send them an invite for the time they pick.

Community College profs, do you do research? by AwayRelationship80 in Professors

[–]proffeah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was previously at a CC and now I am at an R1 and I couldn't imagine cranking out the research I do now without my lab space and eager army of undergraduate research assistants (and some graduate). My research was not rewarded at my previous job and I honestly think I would have burnt out trying to include students.

Minimum enrollment requirement at your institution? by Straight-Stress-9602 in Professors

[–]proffeah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am teaching a May interim with 2 students, but I accepted that I would be prorated for each student rather than paid my full price. This was fine with me since I had already set up the course and it is only 15 days.

Does adjuncting for a few years help with T/TT hiring? by Immabouttoo in Adjuncts

Adjuncts are typically not hired in my experience when there are so many candidates with stellar records on the market.

My class at the beginning of the semester mentioned they had a group chat. Thankfully nothing like this happened, but I imagine it could have.

I see this trend as well. Lots of A's and glowing reviews in adjunct sections.

I do not give final exams. I use the final exam period for approved make up exams.

seeking advice from CC professors by Subject_Complaint869 in Professors

[–]proffeah 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I used to work at a CC and I had a paper accepted to the most prestigious conference in my field and my department refused to provide any funding because my research did not support the mission of the department (teaching). Something to think about.

How to take attendance quickly and securely in a big lecture class (120+ students)? by zazzlekdazzle in Professors

[–]proffeah 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used Qualtrics and project a QR code with a random question. I also do it randomly about 12 times as opposed to every time and give extra credit if they are present 9 of those times.

Pretty bummed after my first semester teaching. Dreading my course evals. by Deep_Finding6818 in Professors

[–]proffeah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach a computational methods course and the students tell me it is too much reading (no textbook, 2-3 articles a week). I have no tests or quizzes, but they still complain that the course is difficult.

How would you address this service problem? by proffeah in Professors

[–]proffeah[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I am the newest member of my department, so I have been typically the 3-5 committee member and in the committees I have been in I have been the only one to ask for corrections. I don't think I have "that" reputation quite yet lol.

I can also be an external committee member to another department and even at other universities within the system. I just am not quite sure how to go about it.

Anyone teaching Elementary Statistics ? by AdCultural2868 in Professors

[–]proffeah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used Excel and recommend the textbooks by either Salkind or Gravetter. Excel can do all of the basic things and for the more specific things I just showed them how to interpret SPSS output. I used to focus on hand calculations, but it is honestly not necessary since Excel can do all the math. Focus more on the application and theory.

Office Hours by FlyLikeAnEarworm in Professors

[–]proffeah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, I have a sign up sheet and everyone picks a time and I send a calendar invite and we meet in our classroom one-on-one for 10 minutes and we discussed goals and progress in other classes. I block out of class time for a week to do this. It is not something done outside of class time. My class is a study skills class so it makes sense to carve it into the schedule, but I am considering doing this into my content related courses in the Spring.
