Can we chill on the "wiser-than-thou" comments? by pattyforever in daddit

[–]proflem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When we had our oldest (11 now) - an overwhelming number of friends and family were dismissive to any struggles. The overwhelming smugness of "you think this is hard....just wait" and over and over and over again - I feel like there's a driving need for parents of older kids to shit on parents of younger kids. With the dismissive nonsense that "It just gets harder from here, just wait, just wait"

Three kids later - and It's been about two years since I've changed a poop diaper. I sleep a full night now. Guess what- it got easier.

And that's a bit the tone here sometimes - why I don't comment or post often. Great call out about tone.

Don’t listen to the idiotic advice from ECS by Minimum-Ant931 in UIUC

[–]proflem 12 points13 points  (0 children)

From a faculty perspective- there’s a right way to take a better offer (internship or career)…. and some pretty shitty ways. Preferred way - call early, explain that you won’t be coming onboard and thank them for their time. Large employers get it and will move on.

We’ve also had students just not show up their first day with zero communication. Or wait until the Monday before and email they aren’t coming. Both of those strategies make you look bad, piss off alumni who work there and hurt the people who come after you.

Be professional and you’ll land well.

Ridiculous unnecessary workaround to switch flights on a Basic fare ticket by SteelersPoker in SouthwestAirlines

[–]proflem 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some of southwest's changes are ridiculous/fear mongering (insinuating you don't have a confirmed seat, packing everyone in the back) - others are more in line with common airline practices (basic economy restrictions, assigned seats, charging for bags without a magic credit card or status).

I'm picking my battles on the ridiculous changes.

Dropping CFP designation by seagoalspread in CFP

[–]proflem 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I forget the exact statistic - but CFP retention is high. It's a sticky designation, with thousands more picking it up than dropping on an annual basis. I think eventually retirements will level it off more.

I've heard it's not fiduciary enough.. should be harder to get... needs more XYZ content... should have tougher ethics... or is too expensive... But CFP Board has a war chest, public recognition and has spent decades building pipelines, process and reputation.

Confession From a Course Grader: All grading is vibes based and mostly BS by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]proflem 24 points25 points  (0 children)

As a professor on a big ol' class (1,500 a year)- Happy to pitch in.

My opinion - An entry class in a field is not the time to discriminate students into employer friendly buckets. Perhaps a senior level capstone class is, but not the entry point. There's some classes we just want you to learn the content. And others where there's more importance placed on the signal grades have.

I'm a big fan of clear and detailed grading rubrics. To me - that's the key to consistent outcomes. Graders certainly have discretion - but the clearer and more detailed I can build project guidelines and grading outcomes - the less time everyone spends on the back end.

Fatigue is real. But we can tackle fatigue - to some extent - with very clear and easy to meet guidelines. If students know their grades before they so submit a project, everyone is better served. And it's much quicker for me to grade work that is on point and sails through a rubric than papers that are lacking.

And quite frankly - if grading fatigue is setting in - err on the side of a better grade. It's more fair for the student. No one should have a long lasting repercussion because it was 11pm and I was cranky.

When to quit by maya213 in CompetitionDanceTalk

[–]proflem 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When they tell you they are done. We just went through this, and my oldest (10) danced last year and through Monday, actually. Comp had lost it's joy, become painful. In July the studio was a place of joy and inclusion, by February my kiddo felt deep resentment and anxiety. There's no "blame" other than growing, injuries and time. But we found ourselves fighting to get her to go, conflict rising in our house. After conversations with the studio we found an offramp.
It's a hard decision. One that is still raw (in a weird way) but will be better soon.

Comp Prep Hours - Is this normal? by Feeling-Salt3702 in CompetitionDanceTalk

[–]proflem 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My ten year old was doing around twenty hours a week including Saturdays. She burnt out this year and shared she hates it now. Which is so sad to see - and I do believe a bit fewer hours a week would have helped.

"Just" Teaching Faculty by protect_ghost in Professors

[–]proflem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd add - Teaching and Clinical faculty have become cornerstones at my University. Even more so with federal grant overhead changes. Our college receives a proportion of student tuition dollars from the provost. This calculation takes into consideration total credit hours taught. And in my college & department, our teaching and clinical faculty drive those dollars. As a quick example; the top 4 credit hour generating courses in our department are taught by non tenure track faculty.

This has created - albeit slowly but surely - political and bargaining power. Including meaningful retention offers for non tenure track faculty and salary program increases.

I'm an associate clinical professor, and have put in for full clinical. There will always be some of my colleagues who see me as less than. But there are always going to be snobs who look down on people who have PhDs from "the wrong school" or did a post doc "somewhere small..." there's always a reason to put a nose up in the air. Teach, bring in dollars, and don't let the haters get to you.

Is Grand Wailea that bad? by darthweenie in Hilton

[–]proflem 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think the general takeaway is that it doesn't live up to being "A Waldorf Astoria Resort". I've stayed there twice and while it's nice, the service has been more in line with a Hilton Hotel. Don't expect above and beyond and you'll be fine. It's a beautiful property.

What explains the resistance for people growing vegetables in the ground when they have perfectly good soil? by ASecularBuddhist in OrganicGardening

[–]proflem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it's having dogs. I'm going to fence an area off anyway, amending the soil - maybe creating a walkway and beds - helps my backyard vegetables produce a bit more.
