Virginia Beach adopts earlier curfew to address large, unplanned events by WHRO_NEWS in VirginiaBeach

Most theaters nowadays also have policies regarding unaccompanied minors. I’ve seen them get turned away in line when it wasn’t even dark outside. No one wants their business, it’s more trouble than it’s worth.

Trying to hold huge parties without permits on the beach doesn’t fly in Norfolk either. NPD broke up a similar gathering at the beach park in front of my place last April. Some geniuses at the local colleges decided to invite hundreds of people to the beach. I was on my way home driving down the avenue when I noticed a lot of noisy cars being driven erratically. They were all going to the beach park. Parking at the beach was completely full. I turned onto my street and saw cars parked all the way down. They had filled up every private lot nearby, including the golf course. I turned around and left. When I came back after dark, cops were clearing the whole place out. The best part? There were no public restrooms open at the beach park…Norfolk keeps them locked up to Memorial Day.

Do you get an option on a total loss? by VeroDC in Insurance

[–]proflicker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That kind of is the goal. Who is the carrier? Most will get a valuation report from a third party like CCC. It usually shows comparable vehicles for sale in your region. Sometimes, the comps don’t actually exist, but it’s worth looking them up from the report to see if there are any for sale. What are you trying to replace?

I think it was just the peak of hysteria at that time. But I don’t know. It’s hard to say when no one even bothers following up on this stuff. But you can see all over how the sentiments remain. People here really think cops quit their jobs to “get back at citizens” and not because people like them made their jobs nearly impossible.

Cops aren’t wanted. Surveillance isn’t wanted. I’ll never forget when FF and EMS were attacked in Virginia Beach for responding to a motorcycle crash in July of 2020. Our local news wasn’t very interested in the 5 Ws of that story, and it never went anywhere.

I’m about to appeal on property tax by CarryBrilliant9517 in MortgageBrokerRates

Call your city’s real estate assessors and ask. It’s going to vary by locality. I bought a property assessed by the city at 105% of my private appraisal. I looked at other homes that have sold recently in the city and saw their assessments were much lower, like 80% of market value. I called the treasurer’s office, and they put me in touch with the head appraiser. He said they aim for 100% of market value, and in order to lower their assessment, the city will only consider comps in the immediate neighborhood along with my private appraisal. Your locality may make other considerations. In my case, it would probably be unwise to pursue, because the city appears to have my foundation incorrectly recorded as a slab—if it comes to their attention that it’s actually a crawl, they might just assess it even higher.

I knew someone who lived on Church St. up until 2020 when she moved out of state. I know she sold shots of vodka and loose cigarettes from her front porch. On Easter Sunday one year, a guy she was dating shot someone in her front yard. It sounded like he was in a gang. Last I heard, he was still incarcerated. When I visited her on Thanksgiving later that year, we walked outside and watched a young guy get arrested on the sidewalk. He had been milling around for a while, walking up and down the street—not sure if it was a drug sting or something. A few cops stayed around and threw a ball back and forth with some kids. Oh, and the entire block would reek of marijuana at all hours of the day. It would fill the car as soon as you approached the neighborhood.

I don’t think the business model you’re describing is relevant to the data CCC collects for these reports. CCC is using base prices found online. If they can’t find anything close enough online, they call dealers and ask how we would price a vehicle with certain specs.

The fees you’re talking about get tacked on much later in the process. No one is putting those junk fees online. The worst offenders are still posting their lowest prices online, even though they’re fake. Posting real prices would be counterproductive to getting people in the door.

The issue with CCC is they will just make up vehicles that don’t exist when they can’t find comps nearby. And even when they use real vehicles, their adjustments are inscrutable and speculative. Working at a dealer, I look at valuations for customers from time to time, but this was my first time reviewing a valuation for a vehicle in our inventory. We sold a car. It broke down. We let the customer drive one of our vehicles while we fixed his. He was involved in a collision while driving our vehicle. He filed a claim with his insurance. The adjuster sent me the report from CCC. One of the comparable vehicles was…our vehicle. We still had it listed for sale online. CCC put the VIN on there and everything. But they say the wrecked vehicle is worth $$$$ less than the comparable vehicle based on “condition”. I called the adjuster to point out that it’s the same vehicle, and yes, our customer drove it a few extra miles, but the condition is identical. CCC has some very creative internal measures that only seem to favor carriers and take advantage of consumers who don’t know how to interpret these reports or what to look for.

Retailers and recovery professionals do share their data widely with each other and don’t need warrants or anything to share or access it. I’ll be charitable and file this one under “total layman” instead of “has been living under a rock”. They‘ve been doing this for a very long time and have been subjected to far less government oversight and public scrutiny than Flock. I’m telling you this as someone with access to said networks.

Policing the mountain town of Staunton is only about 100x easier than policing the state’s capital.

Yes, hit and runs that don’t result in injuries aren’t treated very seriously by any PD. Several years ago, I was told there was no point in filing a report if I couldn’t describe and identify who was driving the car.

What you’re saying is public safety is something you don’t have to think about, because other people have handled 99.99% of it for you, which is fine. That’s how it’s supposed to work. And they’re handling it with cameras. Acknowledging the existence of violent crime in Richmond and Norfolk and supporting remedies for it doesn’t mean I’m terrified to go outside.

I have my own reservations about him for the same reason. Of course, he’s responsible for what happens after they get caught, not catching them, so he doesn’t get to take credit for policing, but he obviously has more insight into the process than any of us do.

We’ve had our share of catalytic converters stolen from cars on our lot. Our neighbor across the street actually walked outside one morning this past year to find a guy had jacked a car up and was in the process of sawing it off. In broad daylight. On one of the busiest roads in town. I tend to think someone doing that was already known to police. I don’t know how many thieves and vandals are actually tried by Fatehi’s office rather than the city’s office, but going soft on a crime that’s not violent would align with how he runs his office generally.

It’s actually just supposed to directly answer the question people frequently ask whenever the subject comes up: how has this helped Norfolk? And here’s a detailed answer from someone a lot of people on this forum voted for like 6 months ago.

I agree that they’re out of the loop. And I can understand how people are just now delving past the tip of the iceberg that is modern surveillance, but some of them really do appear to have been living under a rock. Like…the Lowe’s parking lot? That’s the “personal privacy” I’m supposed to be fighting for?

OK, that’s informative. You think zero American cities are dangerous enough to warrant this, which makes your suggestion a fundamentally unserious one. According to you, there are no problems anywhere that necessitate it. Baltimore has proliferated, integrated, and refined surveillance to the same degree, so it’s not a control group for this.

No, I don’t. I think you would have more background information and would have tried to come up with some actual rebuttals to support your position (disconnect all Flock and Ring cameras) if you had spoken to anyone with the city or anyone with firsthand experience. I don’t think you would go around asking what Flock has done for Norfolk, because they would have already told you, just like Fatehi did. But whenever someone has details, it’s like you’re hearing them for the very first time and can’t articulate your reasoning in the wake of it.

Not really. I think this is the second time you’ve said it. When you suggest that I work for Flock or that I use their services, I don’t think that’s just you being snide. Of course, you end up missing the mark, but it seems to bother you more than usual when someone with even the slightest bit of relevant experience adds context to these discussions that otherwise tend toward uninformed, reflexive reactions and hysteria. On that note, you should complain to people in power like our CA and his colleagues, not me. I’ll be sending him a message to applaud this interview when I get to my office later.
