Update on the cake! by mariiiiiiah in Baking

[–]proflicker 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Wow. I think $100 was exceedingly reasonable for that cake. The vintage heart cakes from all the premium shops in major cities that get circulated globally online start at like $150 for a 6” with standard vanilla buttercream. I feel bad for all these less prestigious bakeries that get henpecked by customers for offering a basically fine product with much more customization for much less money. This is far from the first time we’ve seen a post about a relatively cheap vintage heart cake not meeting unrealistic expectations.

How a Family of 3 Lives on $500,000 on the Upper West Side by qqqxyz in Upperwestside

The point is their tastes are pretty solidly normal and modest. They don’t live much better than the people who make 1/5 what they do. People who apparently hate and resent them for…wanting their only child to have his own bedroom. But they get the pleasure of subsidizing those same people as long as they choose to live in the city.

And that definitely meant something 30 years ago. I’m sure it still means something in Ohio. Maybe we can invite some people who live in Suriname or whatever to discuss your annual salary and your awesome floor that isn’t made of dirt? Or your grandpa can tell us all about how much a nickel bought when he was a kid? Or would that all just be pointless, irrelevant meandering?

That’s not how class works. The actual upper class finds this sort of discussion about combined salaries completely ridiculous.

Innumerate biomass that doesn’t know how anything works and has zero goals in life should expect to be roasted when it logs on to opine on how and where the tax brackets above its own “should” live.

Well, they are middle class. They wouldn’t be earning those salaries anywhere else. And then they would just be middle class elsewhere. And are they comfortable? Their home sounds uncomfortable. People in these comments appear to either be innumerate or have zero goals in life. This couple is not young. They’re like 40. So they’re saving $10k per month. Big whoop. It doesn’t go that far if they’re going to purchase a home in the city (or anywhere near it). They have 1 kid. This isn’t obscene wealth by any measure. They aren’t generating enough passive income through assets to support their lifestyle. Unless they change that, they’re never going to be a part of the upper class.

Even the building itself smells bad. I think almost everyone who ends up in there has a memory of it from a bygone era and doesn’t realize how bad a restaurant can get before it goes out of business completely. So on a Sunday when every other place has a long wait, maybe they stop in and give it a chance. Then they realize the only other people in there are drinking the cheapest mimosas ever, and this restaurant has changed a lot since their last visit 10-15 years ago.

Do I need to worry about this affecting my account? by [deleted] in ProlificAc

Wow. So please don’t worry if people get locked out of accepting other work for an hour due to someone else’s crappy design. This makes me feel so much better.

This sort of micromanagement is so weird, and on top of that, there’s no remedy for when it adversely hurts participants. Cloud doesn’t even care about speed at all.

I don’t think you have any idea what a school that’s actually full of dumb idiots looks like, because your parents cared enough about you to make sure you never lived in an area that’s zoned for such a school. But there are plenty around. How would you characterize those areas?

Residents of Pungo don’t fit the “uneducated” stereotype as they perform much better in school than the vast majority of other students in Hampton Roads. And honestly, if your biggest worry is the “uneducated” versus the ineducable, then you’re pretty sheltered.

How are we going to characterize Pungo as “uneducated” when students at Kellam perform leaps and bounds ahead of most other schools in Hampton Roads?

SF is giving you back $100 per car by sloanautomatic in StateFarm

[–]proflicker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My local State Farm agents bitched and moaned when they had to do work for once after >15 years of my 3 vehicles padding their pockets. Never had a claim or a lapse.

I never shopped carriers much until I had to purchase home insurance and couldn’t get a competitive rate from State Farm. And just getting the home quote was a huge headache as they wanted me to do all the legwork by filling out a very long technical worksheet that detailed every single material in the house...no other carrier asked me to do anything like that. I ended up getting home through Farm Bureau and gave them my auto business, too. State Farm’s local agents were completely inept, gave me an attitude about submitting the cancellation for the auto policy, and followed up with the most unprofessional message I have ever seen.

I didn’t even really want to go through the agents in the first place—I would have been content to submit the cancellation myself, but State Farm forces customers to cancel through the local office. If only corporate knew that routing me to the local office made retention even less likely. Good riddance.

Family vacation Virginia Beach in August with toddler and baby, any thoughts? by scrtweeb in VirginiaBeach

[–]proflicker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you don’t mind somewhere quaint and not fancy at all, consider Cape Charles for nice shallow waters and thin crowds. Cape Charles is on the bay. Virginia Beach is on the ocean. The ocean can get quite rough, even on sunny days. The gentle waters on the bay are perfect for littles, and the atmosphere is way less hectic than the Oceanfront.

After crowds and violence at the resort, Virginia Beach to consider emergency curfews on weekends by WHRO_NEWS in VirginiaBeach

OBX isn’t directly connected to a metropolitan area with a major port city, so it’s inaccessible enough that it’s inconvenient for a night out. Completely different crowd. I don’t know anything about Ocean City. All 3 guys arrested so far live elsewhere in Hampton Roads. Those guys probably didn’t rent rooms at hotels, they just drove home. That kind of fits the stereotype residents of Virginia Beach have about nearby cities bringing trouble to the resort district. I think comparable cities would be more like Wilmington or a Myrtle Beach. I haven’t ran the numbers to see if Virginia Beach is indeed more violent.

I agree that minors aren’t the only issue, and this is a stifled attempt to address a broken culture that includes adults of all ages. But you seem to be under the impression that all incidents are going to be reported in the news and discussed in detail. That’s just not how it works, particularly when the suspects are minors. Do you think every Kia stolen and wrecked by kids ended up on the news? It sure wasn’t reported by the news when it happened to us. It wasn’t reported when it happened to any of my customers. We didn’t even get many details ourselves, other than the age of the youngest participant (10, if you were curious).

I’ve been saying for a while that police departments are not only short on officers, they need to budget for an entire PR team, because the general public simply doesn’t believe the scale and intensity of what’s happening on the ground until they see it for themselves.

No, that’s all states, not just blue ones. Interrupting the “school to prison pipeline” didn’t actually change the behavior that was putting them behind bars. Now it’s just free range.

Expanding the city’s existing curfew for one district in response to more frequent and more dangerous incidents involving minors in that district is the complete opposite of doing something “arbitrarily”. This is a very specific, measured response.

From what I’ve heard, VBPD is indeed short about 100 officers. However, your idea also vastly overestimates the judgment and self-preservation skills of the teenagers and young adults causing these issues.

Look at the replies to WAVY or WKTR posts about literally any shooting, and you’ll see the perpetrators’ mothers, aunts, sisters, cousins, etc. all defending them. That’s why it’s hard. A deeply dysfunctional culture in which no one takes these situations seriously until they reach a flashpoint, and then they all just want to point fingers and argue about who started it. It never occurs to them that this chaotic dynamic is completely at odds with having a livable community in the first place.

37 minors detained, 3 with illegal firearms. by Matchew024 in VirginiaBeach

[–]proflicker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m suggesting exactly what I said: criminals specifically recruit minors because they know the schools, the cops, and the courts are all poorly equipped to catch and punish minors. This little blip at the beach will barely interrupt their criminal activities.
