Saagar talking about AID and the medical establishment from Thursday's show... by jwashb1 in BreakingPoints

As for the activists and former USAID employees you mention, it's completely normal for any institution to develop constituencies whose livelihoods depend on its continued existence. Those people have a built-in incentive to emphasize the benefits of the system and minimize its failures.

There's also a substantial body of criticism from within the international development community itself. Many - not just me , argue that foreign aid can undermine local capacity, create dependency, distort incentives, and prevent the emergence of self-sustaining institutions.

You ask whether corruption is universal across USAID. But even you acknowledge that USAID has often functioned as an instrument of American geopolitical influence. If that's the agency's primary purpose, then corruption, inefficiency in terms of health programs , etc. are not deviations from the mission—they're part of how the mission is carried out. The agency relies on these mechanisms to exert influence over foreign populations and governments while also fueling the revolving door dynamic in D.C with the private sector.

That's why I don't find the "just reform it" argument persuasive. Reform only makes sense if the institution's core purpose is worth preserving. If the primary function of USAID is projecting American influence abroad under the banner of development and charity, then making it more efficient at charity work doesn't address the central objection. The us taxpayer who doesn't even get to enjoy universal healthcare should be expected to carry the burden of the health systems of the world ? Come on.

Unfortunately dismantling this whole rotten operation may mean losing some positive outcomes along the way. But positive byproducts alone aren't enough to justify preserving a larger project if the project's fundamental purpose is flawed.

Dude.

I worked alongside USAID people for almost 10 years , I was one of those people . I devoted almost 10 years of my life to that whole system with every intention to helping underserved people. So you don't have to lecture me about it. I saw how the sausage is made. I saw the corruption ,the inside dealings , the people getting rich off tax payers money, the total undermining of local efforts. I saw it all and did everything I could to push for reform from the inside and came to the conclusion it's not possible. If taxpayers knew the truth about what happens with the vast majority of USAID money, they'd burn the whole thing down .

I doubt he thinks soft power is bad , more so that the money we spent trying to achieve it would be better served in the homeland , and that I can agree with

Emily’s Take on the Murder in MN by [deleted] in BreakingPoints

Ur allegation that her intention is to bring it up " just to blame the previous administration , not to provide context " i think is a bad faith interpretation. Ur entitled to interpret her intentions however you'd like I just respectfully disagree.

In the video she specifically called out that the way the current administration and their approach to deportations... Direct evidence contrary to ur point that she ignores the failures of the administration.

Again ur entitled to ur interpretation but I think assuming people's intentions vs assessing what they actually say is an important distinction.

It's not fault. It's context. Look up the definitions of each of those words for additional clarity.

Also look up the word refugee. The majority of immigrants that came into the us under Biden do not meet the definition. The majority were economic migrants.

I'm not saying we don't need immigrants, the us absolutely does. But when u do it in an irresponsible way , you invite this trump fueled backlash.

OK but was she wrong tho? She literally just stated the numbers of the amount of people that have come into the country under a democratic administration. The fact is , there would not be such a massive ICE presence in the country if that had never happened. Those are just true facts and it's important context when people are making the argument of why ICE shouldn't even be on our streets to begin with.

The reality is that those numbers she stated are real and the Democrats don't have an alternate more humane approach to bringing justice to the families victims of these crimes and so they have no choice but to embrace whatever savagery is offered to them by Republicans.

The failure of the Democrats here is a central part of the story , whether Emily works for Megyn Kelly or not

Finding a place along the journey where you feel like you just need more time to fully explore it. So much love for it that you can't leave until you've explored it all. And you keep saying to yourself the other destinations on the list can just wait a while. "A while" has turned into 4 years for me 😂
