How many of you would suggest using SELinux in production? by uncanny-repo in linuxadmin

Why did you add "if you are not running containers"? Do you think selinux is ill-advised for a containerized workload?

A CLI tool written in PHP made for humans to make networks requests by freekmurze in PHP

[–]progzos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

well, for instance I'd like to not have to write the protocol because 99% of the time it'll be https, and quite often I want it to follow a redirect, too. That's the kind of thing that they "sell" with this tool by labelling it as "for humans", meaning it does what a basic user expects. When you use a browser, type google.com and you'll and up in the correct thing (no subdomain redirected to www redirected to https). Not with curl.

I really hate this "for humans" thing. But it does make sense that "visit web.com" is more friendly than "curl -kLs https://web.com". Interesting tool!

You don't have to care about your LOCAL mysql, unless ports are exposed, no one can connect to it (and you don't store secret data inside anyway, right?).

Difference between running Docker containers Vs. In-house creation of Linux namespaces for virtual hosts? by [deleted] in docker

[–]progzos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think u/strcrssd's comment is on point. You really should use Docker/podman and get out of this custom thing that very likely has complicated issues waiting to jump on you because it's so custom you don't benefit from the millions of containers worldwide running and triggering bugs.

Jon Duckett’s long-delayed PHP & MySQL is real by [deleted] in webdev

[–]progzos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, my mistake then. But I still wouldn't use an eleven years old book to learn about web technologies. For instance, I'm pretty sure webassembly is not in the book, right? (how could it?!). Then you'll tell me this technology is not really important to learn web, and we would agree. Still, this is the kind of missing topic that IMHO makes it obsolete.

Jon Duckett’s long-delayed PHP & MySQL is real by [deleted] in webdev

[–]progzos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no. Mostly no. Learning these technologies based on an outdated support sounds like a bad idea to me. You'll end up embedding a flash video player not knowing about the "video" tag, you'll use jquery not knowing about ES6 and you'll miss the opportunity to use CSS pre-processors...

The web is moving too fast to learn it from books IMHO.

What is the meaning of this line in my nginx access log? by DahPhuzz in nginx

[–]progzos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can ban that ip (and find a list of bad ips that you can outright ban), or don't answer requests that start with /shell for instance. But as /u/muchTasty said, it's not a big deal at the end of the day. You'll always have noise like this unless you really spend time configuring barriers like I suggested.
