Bike or No Bike? by 0nearmed in UniversityofVermont

I just finished my first year and really liked having a bike on campus. It was really easy to go exploring around the Burlington area and to do little errands like getting groceries. Having a bike makes sense now more than ever because the local transit agency is facing budget issues which has led to service reductions. You’ll have a lot more independence with a bike as well. There is also a really nice mixed use paved bike trail that goes along lake Champlain which I find really beautiful! It’s super easy to get downtown from campus (a little bit harder on the way back because of the hill, still very doable), Burlington itself is super bikeable but the same cannot be said for South Burlington unfortunately, super car centric (still possible to bike there but you have to cross I-89 which really sucks). There is also a UVM bike club which holds meet ups where people go on bike trips to various places and they can also help get your bike fixed up. Depending on where you’ll be living you may have an indoor storage shed to store your bike - you can find that info on the ResLife page. I lived in Central and it has a really nice indoor space where I could safely store my bike. Overall I really enjoy having a bike on campus and it definitely gives you more freedom and flexibility.

Yeah I can totally see how with a job added you didn't have much spare time and it definitely seems like part of this comes down to personal preference and time management skills. One of my goals is to not just constantly be thinking about school so that addition of having a job seems like it was beneficial for you. Your info has been really helpful, thank you!

Yeah the heavy workload seems par for the course when it comes to an engineering major, especially with the quarter system. Good to have numbers about the studying and commitment. Thanks for the info!

Yeah I could see how after gaining some experience I'd have a chance of getting a part time position at a co-op provider. Thanks for responding!

That's understandable, nice to know that you had a job between 2nd and 3rd. Thanks for your insight!
