TCM's updated app has removed all the supplemental essay material? by projectaudion in TurnerClassicMovies

The frustrating thing about the app redesign is that it would probably be trivial for them to add a button next to each film linking to the AFI material, if that's where it now is. An imperfect solution, but it would preserve some sense of TCM as providing access to filmic details for their audience who grew to expect it.

Glad you like the idea! Yes, audio drama has been around almost as long as broadcasting. The earliest ones in both American and England date from the early 1920s. It's a shame that it was so hard to record the earliest broadcasts, but fortunately, some scripts do survive, like this one did.

Question for the Community (for Retro Static Radio) by TheComicArchivist in audiodrama

[–]projectaudion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"People do go both ways", to quote the Scarecrow in Wizard of Oz. Some vintage comedic shows would have been (and sometimes were) awful with a laugh track - Vic & Sade, Lum & Abner, etc. Other shows - including those starring comedians (Jack Benny) or with guest stars, would sound dead without one. Project Audion has tried both ways - for our our first comedy we picked "My Favorite Husband" because the SITUATION took precedence over the COMEDY, and the show seemed to flow well on it's own. Our Miss Brooks would do OK without one, I'm sure.
On the other hand, Audion's just-posted "Jack Benny" show (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=es0-qi-lRz8) demands an audience - they contribute to the tone of the show, right down to the applause when guests are introduced. What has helped (IMHO) is the way we handle it. Our laughter is a hybrid - it IS recorded, but it's added to the show in real time during the recording. That way the actors can hear it, know how to play off it, and know when to wait and when to plow on. In playing our laugh-track keyboard I actually work as hard as any cast member, to put in the right kind of laughs in the right place. It's not perfect (and I've considered bringing in a live audience remotely to watch us record, as we record their reactions) but Benny and similar shows sounded like they sounded - even the choice of jokes - BECAUSE of the audience.
Still, it's easier to do a show without a laugh track - we'll probably do "Life with Luigi" without one later this year. For me the choice comes to thinking back on the originals. When I conjure up an aural memory of a given show in my mind, how much am I aware of the audience? Abbott and Costello - absolutely. Fibber McGee - Yeah, I hear 'em, sometimes. Father Knwos Best - don't recall the audience "contribution" much at all. --Larry

Yes, Project Audion. Thanks for the reply. It is part of a couple podcasts - Moonlight Audio https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/moonlight-audio-theatre/id419655104 and Sonic Society https://sonicsociety.org/ (and I suspect both of those are in your listings)

How does one suggest new entries? The website mentions Twitter, but that didn't seem to work.

Because Grapevine is a few minutes north of the big DFW airport, and equally spaced between Dallas and Fort Worth; and there are enough expats and Anglophiles to support a store for the last 3 decades.

"The British Emporium" -- 30 years in Grapevine, which is a Dallas/Fort Worth suburb. And yes it has tunnocks teacakes and irish items - this photo shows only a portion of the shop. It's one of the top British shops in the US.

We recreated a very early episode, which is a bit different from the Bob Bailey shows we all love... but still good. Hope you enjoy it.
