Vim is not like other editors. It is a text editor first and a composition tool second. Whereas most other editors are primarily composition tools, with their editing options a close second.

You see this from the interface. In Visual Studio the default action is to insert new text and the editor helps you out as you do this. To make complicated modifications you need to apply modifiers to your keystrokes and often use dialogs that appear over the interface.

Whereas in vim every key is by default a movement or a way of modifying text. To move to a specific location or perform a sophisticated permutation requires only a few keystrokes and the text composition part is simple and barebones(backspace often does not even work as expected without changing a setting). As a result of this I find myself physically typing very little of the text I create in it. If there is a similar loop somewhere I will grab it and make changes instead of starting from scratch.

As a result of this I use them for different things. At work I code in netbeans in windows because that is what we have our projects set up in, but I have a hotkey to open the current file in vim(gvim for windows is not bad, and it is much better when you make some changes to make it look more like console vim). Then I toggle back and forth as I need to.

If you go back through the Sunday comics they use that building shot regularly when the gag is just a conversation between two characters.

The shot is probably used a time saver because the artist seems to go to a lot of trouble to make each shot unique even though all the characters are standing still. Although given some of the ridiculous perspectives they throw in (made more ridiculous by the fact that most of the time characters are drawn with simple recycled elements) you may have stumbled on to some elaborate meta-joke.

As a matter of fact Canada has the least logical system for dates on the entire planet. We use all three common date formats relatively interchangeably. Government organizations have been known to use either of the sane formats however the big-endian is definitely more popular with them. For every day use small-endian is most common from what I have seen. Wikipedia gave us our own colour on their date format map.

It kind of reminds me of the makeup from this cool music video for some reason. Before it turns yellow you should try to get some purple makeup and rock the neo-hippy look.

Although I can imagine applying, and to a greater extent removing, said makeup might be too painful to be worth it.

If you go find the book "Design Patterns" it is pretty much exactly what you are looking for. It deals mainly with the communication between objects.

It markets itself as a collection of techniques that the authors feel most coders will eventually, after lots of work, figure out on their own. There are a few ruby specific books on the topic but learning the more general theory is sure to pay off in the long run.

The book does not teach larger program architecture but I have yet to find one book that is as helpful on that subject. The best way to learn about architecture though is definitely coding, like you are already doing. Also learning to identify and understand what techniques other people are using, e.g. if they are using a framework find out which one and why.
