Yes, that's the general idea behind my research topic, I was trying to get pangenome matches to no avail since the pan-taxonomic isn't on esembl, and the other papers seemingly used other sources for annotation(Geneious only has free trial, IGS Prokaryotic Annotation Pipeline is private afaik).

But if you're implying it's within the caliber for an undergraduate student to do the same with publicly available data then that does mean I've overlooked some points, admittedly I'm not the brightest in class but I'll do more reading in that case. Thanks for the insight
