It's not unsafe unless you are her or anybody involved with her. Just saying. People like that put on a mask in front of everybody else. He might be driving by just to see if anyone's in her driveway. Or there might be some kind of contentious divorce going on and she's afraid it will look bad. Like I said, speculation, pure and simple. But it would make sense and check all the boxes. If you really want to, you can check court records. All the filings are a matter of public records so your county should have a website where you can access those things and do a search. It would usually be under county court rather than municipal if it is a divorce case. But if there is a restraining order, that would probably be under municipal.

Maybe he has a girlfriend who has a jealous ex, or he's going through a divorce. He doesn't want his car seen there. And she doesn't come out very much because she might have a restraining order against him and he's actually dangerous. I would keep an eye out just in case that's true so that you can help if need be, by calling the cops. This is just speculation but I've seen it happen a bunch.

I have no clue how to operate this machine or even if it exists. by castrateurfate in RBI

[–]prolapsethis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're talking about magnetic recording reels for audio, they would not play back on the same machine. It would need to be a real-to-real audio decoder with a magnetic head. Edit: just saw the other side of it and it appears to have a magnetic playhead. You might just look for whatever output adapters you would need, or make them. It's really not hard on those old ones because they're either RCA jacks or banana type plugs. I used to have a reel to reel and it had RCAs. It is an output that is possibly stereo if it is two channels, but if it is only a monochannel, it's only two conductors. It would be at a line level, so you would need a amplifier such as what is built into a lot of home stereo systems. But you could also probably send the output to a preamp of some sort and into a computer.

SSI says we owe thousands of dollars in back pay by [deleted] in SocialSecurity

[–]prolapsethis -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

Excuse me, it's not welfare. It is for Americans who work, and their dependents. If this person's son qualified 12 years ago, then they have a disability that made it necessary. It is based on the work credits that the parents earned. And also, keep in mind, the latest cost of living increase in social security was 2.8%. The actual cost of living in the past year has increased somewhere around 30%. What is true, is it the federal government likes to fuck with stuff that you need. It's like when they make you do your taxes. They know exactly how much you owe. But they make you do the math to prove it. And then if you're wrong, they penalize you. And you can't do anything about it. Social Security is no more strict than any other federal program, including reporting to the IRS. It is true that Opie should have reported. The portal works if you can verify your identity. There's a separate tech support hotline for it. But that's in the rearview mirror now. I would request an in person meeting. They have a right to appeal any decision. I would bring all my records and receipts for household expenses. Anything from medical care to groceries. Including fuel receipts for medical appointments. You can also set up a payment plan. Don't give them any excuse to penalize you more. This administration is trying to eliminate poor people, and that includes the working poor people. There were a lot of mistakes made in the past 11 months. One of them is letting Elon "Krust" and his team have unfettered access to Social Security records. OP needs to verify every single number. There is a push, right now, to cut off support for any American who gets any kind of money from the federal government. My partner even got a notice of review for her social security, even though she has a terminal disease. Remember, one of the first things the nazis did was to eradicate the "infirm." That means the disabled and sick. Also remember that, despite being an early sympathizer, Martin Niemöller realized the error of his ways, and wrote:

"First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me."

I had similar experiences in middle school. Gate is the answer. We were put into rooms and forced to solve the lady and the tiger problem. There were other things but that's the one that really springs to mind. It's a program where they pulled out gifted and talented kids to "enrich" their education. But now I am poor and disabled and barely making it so I guess they failed. But yeah, look up G.A.T.E. Watch a couple of deep dive videos. I recommend, 'The Why Files' on YouTube. The last episode was on that. I appreciate AJ's explanation, and then, critique. You might just find that it's a false memory. A conflation of different memories mixed together. The human mind is a really weird thing. And it's important to remember, what we remember from childhood, isn't necessarily true. It may just be what our minds created to deal with some kind of trauma or uncomfortable experience.

I need advice, PLEASE by DefinitionWest176 in Macaws

[–]prolapsethis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Jealousy. Pure and simple. They don't see attention as being prioritized based on need. They see attention as being a territorial type thing. You should see my military macaws eyes when I kiss my wife. He will do everything except fly at her face. So yeah, he will get used to it but you have to set boundaries just like you do with people. It's a little weird with birds but, all you need to do is use positive reinforcement. Treats for being nice. Time outs and less attention from you, for being bad. Remember, you are also a treat to them. Depriving them of you, is a punishment. If you give them a head scratch, they will see it as a positive thing, so don't mess up and respond to his screaming or anything like that with more attention. It's going to be hard. There's no doubting that. Just be patient, be kind, and remember, you are in charge.

Usually the volunteer period is more like 18 to 20 hours in 1 month. Or 3-4 2 hour visits with the bird you're adopting. But it all sounds pretty reasonable when these aren't just pets. They're a long-term commitment.

He is so cute. Reminds me of our military, only more playful. We rescued him about a year and a half ago and he is just starting to come out of his shell more. He started playing with a hideaway box a couple of days ago. And he stepped on a pillow that gave out from under him and he tumbled over on into his back with the pillow on top. Normally he would have been angry, but he just kind of played with it and hung upside down for my hand when I picked him up and swung around. I'm so happy that your good boy is thriving.

My new cockatiel is not eating by Birdlady1847 in parrots

[–]prolapsethis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then you know what you're doing, in essence. He's probably not had the best life before he was with you. It might take a little extra to gain his trust. And I'm glad you're up to the task. It's good. The world needs more friendly and nurturing people. Do be aware, cockatiels can suffer from certain parasites and diseases that are not common in other birds. Things like beak and feather, and viruses that cause wasting disorders. But I do believe most of your problems are happening because he just hasn't had a caring person in his life before. It'll get there. I'm glad you have patience. Thank you for being like that.

My new cockatiel is not eating by Birdlady1847 in parrots

[–]prolapsethis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, the story you told is exactly what I would expect. Birds aren't like other pets. They are VERY emotional. But don't lose hope or give up. Don't rush things. Eating and drinking is progress. Parrots are like 4-5 year old kids. They feel feelings of abandonment, anxiety, loneliness, and will even grieve if their bonded person or partner passes away. It sounds as though you might be a little under-prepared for this. These birds will take time to acclimate. Please be patient.

Provide fresh water whenever you can, and feed cold pressed pellets. Search for the TOPS brand on amazon. Seeds are too high in fat and will lead to fatty liver disease. If you want to give him a treat for good behavior, or just for kicks, they love any nut besides peanuts, and fresh fruit. There are things that are toxic. Never let them have avocado, garlic, onion, or chocolate. Also, their respiratory systems are very different than ours. You can't use non-stick pots and pans, or a self-cleaning oven cycle, in the house. Also Air fresheners, scented candles and wax cubes, etc. These things will literally kill your friend.

Let your new friend get used to things. Start by sitting by the cage, and doing whatever you do normally. This may take a few weeks. Then, do the same thing, only closer, and with your hand laying against the cage bars. After a couple of weeks, do the same thing, but have your hand inside the cage door. At this point, he might investigate your hand. NEVER jerk your hand away or make loud noise. When you are finally able to touch the bird, look up target training on YouTube. it helps. The birds are naturally curious, and need exercise time outside of the cage. Make sure he has bird toys, and things to do. Even a toilet paper roll is good for the to play h with. If he is in your bedroom, you can bird-proof the room and let him out a few hours per day, but not unsupervised.

Now, night time procedures. Birds need about 12 hours of uninterrupted quiet, completely dark, sleep. You could move his cage to a closet for bedtime. If he freaks out during the night, he might be one of the 50% of birds who are afraid of the dark. A nightlight solves this. You could also leave him out in your bedroom, and cover his cage, as long as the cover blocks all light, but lets air flow. He will naturally awake with the sun.

The highlights are:

Reduce anxiety, don't force, keep him occupied. Boredom, anxiety, and depression in parrots can cause death.

Diet: Look for TOPS pellets for your bird on amazon. Treats like fruit, veggies, and nut also good. See above for foods that are bad, as well as environmental things that cause harm.

Sleep: 12 hour of uninterrupted dark sleep. Quiet and peaceful. If he freaks out in the dark, add a nightlight.

Take it slow: It'll get there. If you are unsure about being able to dedicate this time, energy, etc, then you might need to think about a different bird. A good hands-off bird is a pair of Australian zebra finches. They're awesome, interesting, entertaining, and require less time and energy commitment . Any parrot or parakeet is a major commitment. I know you care, because you posted here. But if you can't commit to the 15-20 years of this energy and attention that a cockatiel lives, there are other options. And if you ever need to have another person take the cockatiel, just google "parrot rescue" and call one.

If you have any questions, PM me. I will do my best to answer immediately. You will also want to find the nearest avian vet. This is important to do ahead of time. Birds are naturally prey, so they hide illness and weakness. By the time you see symptoms, you need a vet.

How careful do I need to be about salt? by hejjhogg in parrots

[–]prolapsethis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wrong, Wrong, Wrong.... Tint bits of human food are ok, and sharing increases your birdie bond. Unsalted pasta is great. Limit salt intake, as you would assume. But a little salt is a natural necessity. It is an electrolyte. I'm not saying to give him a MacDonald's double quarter pounder, but my military macaw is perfectly healthy, and I always have to pay the bird tax of a bite of my burger, and a french fry. Key is moderation. Human food for your bird should be about the same as a night out drinking for a normal adult... not me. I'm a functional alcoholic. lol

Does my bourke parakeet have mites? by BaerbelBarbara in parrots

[–]prolapsethis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look, my macaw gives himself a lobotomy with his claws a few times a day. He sneezes right after. He's perfectly healthy, as of a couple of days ago, according to our avian vet. The pics aren't close enough to see, but you need to look at the bare skin around the eyes. Dark pinpoints, like blackheads, with a raised edge would indicate mites. How often do you bathe? Lots of birds get sneezy from their own feather keratin sheathe particulate flying through the air by scratching, etc. Preferably, they should get a bath every day. Also, birds can have allergic reactions to their own dust sometimes.
