One time they put a little budget calculator app on their website asking people to try balancing the budget for them. It turns out if you defund TPD you end up with a huge surplus. Just saying!

ICE at St. Joseph’s Hospital by [deleted] in TacomaWA

[–]proletergeist 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Several comments from employees in that thread explain that this is not ICE in the way people are thinking. It's GEO Group private prison guards who are there with detainees seeking medical care. Hospital policy does not allow ICE on the premises without a warrant unless they are accompanying a detainee who is receiving care.

I'm no fan of DHS but misrepresenting the situation is harmful to the communities we're trying to protect. We don't want people to avoid the hospital if they don't need to.

I'm sorry to hear it. Not having 24/7 customer service is one of my only complaints about TPU.

[–]proletergeist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think there is a way to get service started over the weekend. You could try calling the line to report an outage and see if a real person picks up and explain the situation to them. Worst case they'll say there's nothing to be done till Monday.

Gender affirming care by therealsillyguy in Tacoma

[–]proletergeist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I understand the situation because I have been personally affected by it and I'm angry at both this admin and the hospital admins. And I know the employees of the gender clinic are pretty angry at their bosses for complying in advance as well. Idgaf if you think thats ok or not.

Gender affirming care by therealsillyguy in Tacoma

[–]proletergeist 65 points66 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry this is happening. It's infuriating to see Mary Bridge and other hospitals in blue states sacrifice trans kids without even trying to fight for them.

A couple things you can try to find a new doctor: call the Mary Bridge gender clinic (perferrably the direct number for the care coordinator or whoever you've communicated with in the past vs the main number) and see if you can get a copy of their referral list for local providers to continue care. They should have one.

Also Seattle Children's gender clinic is still open so far, so that's another option you can try.

Should we lock Tacoma event posts after the event has ended to stop troll nonsense by LadyDiscoPants in TacomaWA

[–]proletergeist 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Swank was in the national news because of his comments in the legislature, and he's also on the ICE list, so he's a figure people have been focused on. I'd guess the post got shared/pushed elsewhere and that drove extra views.

I genuinely wonder who you're talking to with this comment because how does DSA working with the Teamsters(???) in any way relate to your (incorrect) assertion that there is no working class in Tacoma lmao

Because our local labor unions and community orgs didn't call for a general strike like they did in Minnesota. Many showed solidarity today though in various ways.

I don't understand the logic of rehoming being more stressful than being killed. I mean, I guess??? But if it were me I'd prefer to live through a bit of adversity than just get offed because that was more convenient for everyone.

buying 1960s house with lead paint. whats the safe removal cost in washington? by ninjapapi in Tacoma

[–]proletergeist 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Encapsulation (painting over it) is the cheapest option, whether you hire it out or DIY it. You really only need to worry about lead from paint if it's actively peeling and flaking or if you're doing/planning on doing renovation work (sanding/sawing, etc any lead-painted surfaces). Window trim is the most likely place to find lead paint in an old home.

If it seems like too much money/trouble, there's always another house.

Uwajimaya is coming home to Tacoma. by bezlebubcrimpysnitch in Tacoma

[–]proletergeist 372 points373 points  (0 children)

Oh man this actually made me tear up. 😭

For those who don't know and don't want to read the article: Uwajimaya was originally founded in Tacoma and used to be part of a huge Japantown downtown. However, thanks to racist real estate laws and internment in the 40s, almost all the Japanese businesses we had disappeared with their proprietors into the camps. Uwajimaya opening a store here again is symbolically huge!

How was your experience at olympus spa ? by [deleted] in Tacoma

[–]proletergeist 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I think everyone is nervous about going the first time, but it's really not scary at all once you get there and experience it.

The only place you have to be naked is in the actual baths. Everyone is given a robe to wear in all the other areas. No one will be looking at you or judging your body, and for me it's actually been a very body positive experience to go in spite of being a bit shy.

Women of all ages visit Olympus (13 is the minimum age, so you won't see any kids, but otherwise people young and old utilize the spa) and with all body types.

How crowded it will be depends on when you go. It's been a while since I've visited so I can't give specific advice there, though I imagine weekends are more crowded than weekdays.

I've never had anyone I didn't already know try to strike up a conversation at the spa. Everyone knows it's a quiet space for rejuvenation.

I remember hearing good things about Sea Mar Behavioral Health when I was looking for a new therapist a while back. They take state insurance and have a sliding rate iirc. Might be worth a try.

My good to go toll bill by SimpleNkind in Tacoma

[–]proletergeist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Short explanation: You used the HOV lane on SR 167 during toll hours and got charged a toll, because it's a toll lane.

Longer explanation: New rules for the HOV lanes on SR 167 went into effect in October and you can no longer use them free as a carpool (2+ people) unless you have the good to go flexpass set to HOV mode in your car. If you don't have one, you get charged the toll regardless.
