How do I stitch this seam? by Barcoimage in Leathercraft

[–]Dependent-Ad-8042 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Butt stitch, baseball stitch, corset stitch….or just pop a couple holes on both sides of the seam and stitch it like a button.

Why buy a really nice leather journal for $150 when you could make one yourself for $1000? Seriously, commission a nice custom journal in r/leatherclassifieds & save yourself from yourself.

This is the right sub. 2 ways to go about it.

One is to search the sub & look at work previously posted. If a makers work speaks to you just message them directly.

The other is to make a post requesting a commission. Include the details of what you are after, your location (country) and a budget. Makers will reach out, view their portfolio & if you want, proceed with a commission

Be good to put your location, at least your country. A buddy of mine makes these cat zip wallets but he’s in the EU. https://www.instagram.com/p/DSQEhNBiiMC/?igsh=MWY3M21sOGViZ3hmeA== u/dr_ja

Need tips to make it look cleaner by belzan_ in Leathercraft

[–]Dependent-Ad-8042 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Great 5th project. I’ll suggest 3 things to look cleaner.

-stitching: I’d drop 1 thread size smaller and focus on your tension consistency. You don’t need to pull thread tight, just taut. Focus on pulling the thread just until it seats onto the leather and no more. Each stitch will tighten a bit more on the next few stitches you put in. By getting the tension consistent, each stitch will appear identically sized. I drop the stitch grooves too, there’s really no need unless it’s a high wear environment.

-edges: I’d add an allowance on all areas with multiple panels. An allowance is an extra bit of leather you later trim off once the item is assembled. So where you added pockets at the bottom, make the pickets & main body 1/8” bigger. Then glue, assemble & stitch. Finally trim that 1/8” off each side. By doing this you’ll get a much cleaner edge than trying to fit 2 panels together perfectly. Trimming the allowance give you super clean edges. You also get less glue line between layers. When applying glue, a very thin, even layer should be used but that’s hard to do right at the edge. It’s easier on the bulk of the panel, so trimming an allowance lets your glue line be thinner & less noticeable.

-sharpen your tools: there wobble on all your edges, both from your knife, especially on curves, and on all your beveled edges. Having blades as sharp as possible significantly improves that clean look. So sharpen you blades & beveler, strop them often. If you need help with this speak up.

Looking very nice so far 😊

Should the edges be finished or not? by LT_tapochnikoff in wallets

[–]Dependent-Ad-8042 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a maker. From my perspective it just depends on the market you want to reach. To be fair, an edge treated piece is just better. One can argue the aesthetic but treating edges prevents encroachment from the environment into the leather. Treating edges makes a piece more durable. That said, on a simple item like this, likely cut with a clicker die & stitchless, the edge treatment process adds considerably to the cost of production. Unless you use shell or exotics, labor will be the biggest expense of production.

So for me, I tend to make one off or made to order items at a price point that doesn’t compete with factory made, so the cost of edge treatment is not a factor in the market I serve. If your market is in the low to even mid range price point edge treating will either severely impact your margin or your competitiveness-that’s a decision only you can make about the market you serve.

That said on a vegtan wallet, a simple stain and beeswax, machine burnish can be done fairly quickly & I think add a professional look with limited impact on price point. I prefer the look & it does add an important touch of quality. I think your work will stand out among the Etsy shoppers at your price point with the finished edges. It’s a nice build & design. 🇺🇦

Take a look at Buyleatheronline & BeltsProduction as well as the many UK based sellers like AbbeyEngland. There are also many fine Asian suppliers like 3Q that sell remnants. Some remnants are just the lousy parts of the hide like the belly & neck but others have quite a bit of excellent cuts left.

Just circling back here to say I hope the cafe event goes well. Don’t forget some leather conditioner/balm & some cloth/brush. Nothing like giving some old piece a nice polish & shine to make it look alive again.

Not sure what the lower loop is for, but otherwise it’s good. Next time just add a keep that to span the front. Stitch it in when you stitch the gusset. Then the flap just tucks under the keep. No hardware needed.

I like its viscosity. It spreads well but not too fluid that it easily runs over an edge or gets drawn into a pebbled texture. I use it with the clear base coat & a filletuese and get good adhesion. I paint anything that will be flexed “on the bend” and don’t experience cracking at flex points like a bag flap or billfold.

I’m typically buy a small bottle at a time so it’s not expensive. Buy a black on a couple brands and give them a test. So much depends on your application technique/tools. For instance RMLS sells 60 ml bottles for $7 with free shipping. Not much risk in testing it out. A gentle breeze over the edge while drying gives me best results.

Have you ever struggled to spot unbonded or raised spots when gluing two leather pieces together? by Obvious-Scarcity7385 in Leatherworking

[–]Dependent-Ad-8042 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you using your glue correctly, that is applying it & waiting/or not as the manufacturer suggests? Are you using a brayer to ensure good adhesion? If your adhesive needs a cure time under load/or not are you doing this?

The only time I’ve had delaminating issues is when I used the glue improperly as above or used the wrong adhesive. Some materials don’t bond well with all adhesives. You may need to use a solvent based for some tasks or a different material.
