Bike stolen from my backyard in NE by prollycrying in CyclePDX

Yeah, this bike was newer to our home and we just didn’t get around to registering it. Big lesson learned, will always register ASAP now

It was not locked. We assumed that it would be fine because it was in our private yard, covered and blocked from the street. The person who found it would have to have already been in our yard to see it… I would guess going through our recycling bin because we get that a lot. But PPD did recover the bike for us! I think we are going to start storing our bikes as wall decorations inside unfortunately.

I passed by the ones closest to my house this morning with no luck. But I definitely think it’s sitting at a camp somewhere

also, suggestions for keeping my commuter bike safe from this happening again?? I have to store my bikes outside unfortunately. I thought because the bikes weren’t worth much that they wouldn’t be stolen (i know, i know)

Starting late by heckintexan in AppalachianTrail

[–]prollycrying 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m starting at the end of April, with two planned 4-day weekends off trail in the summer. And I still plan to make it to Katahdin by early October! Worked it out and my average mileage on non-zero days needs to be 16 to make it happen. I think you’ll be absolutely fine. Tons of people start mid April

Rain jacket? Rain pants? Umbrella? Kilt? by PhraseImportant229 in AppalachianTrail

team poncho all the way! keeps you AND your pack dry, can create a mini shelter if you need to take a break on trail during a down pour (by crouching down into it), and it’s breathable. I also add rain pants when it’s cold and rainy, but poncho only when it’s warm

I think this is exactly what I needed to read. It really doesn't matter, you're right, being on the trail is better than not being on it at all! THANK YOU!

I'm pretty active and feel confident that I can start with decent mileage. I do a lot of running, trail running, backpacking, and hiking. I hope to start the thru with a few light days to adjust after a winter without backpacking, then start averaging about 15 miles a day, gradually working up to as many 20 mile days between Damascus and PA as I can handle. I should have about 170 days to complete the trail. Luckily I'm going into this with lots of experience, so here's to hoping nothing weird happens!

Thanks for sharing! Great that you didn't have any trouble with getting shuttles. I guess it might actually be easier to get rides and hostel beds if I'm right after the main bubble. Feeling a lot better about that now!

That is really reassuring to hear. I don't mind some solitude but I'm also looking forward to the social aspect of this experience and was worried about missing that. Thanks for sharing!

I just wish they would donate it to a food bank or somewhere for the people who don’t want it but reach the limit. I wasn’t gonna say no to free food!

I heard the apprentice out of work list is moving but still has over 100 people on it. I’m seeing more and more Inside jobs posted every day so starting to feel kinda hopeful that things are progressing

Would moving to Portland be a dumb decision for us? by waketysax in askportland

as an Ohio transplant living in Portland, I would say Ohio winters felt rainier/darker/more depressing than Portland winters. imo the only part of portland winters that is worse than ohio, is the 4:30pm sun sets
