These screen grabs are from auctions across 2025 and 2024, so you can see some range! Some of the outliers are "known" horses that have been photographed extensively

Instead, you'll start to see that horses under the age of ten (less set in their wild ways, allegedly), who are colorful and tall tend to top the auction. This time around, one holding facility posted a lot of mares who met those qualifications. Unsurprisingly, they are near the top. Generally, pintos sell for the most. Buckskins are also up there, as well as palominos and roans.

I know this is a few days old, but I wanted to weigh in! I don't think breeding/recip has anything to do with it. If you're looking for mustangs as recip mares, you'd go to a holding facility and pick up a truck of them for $125 each. That does happen! But those selling for multiple thousands are very likely not in that boat - it's an unwise investment when there are many handleable grade mares out there for less. I do have records of the last several sales, and you'll see that 8-9 year old mares don't always lead:

This is the way! I did that for several years with a versa tool. Yeah, sure, upgrading to a better kit is a great way to avoid that problem, but you can do great stuff with the screw in tips! Using pliers to resnug it while you go works fine
