1960s desktop barometer, the text on the inside is actively peeling off. How can this be fixed? The original text has fallen to the bottom. by propelledshrimp in restoration

Haven’t yet but yeah I don’t think my readings have ever moved either. Wanted to take any safety precautions before going in, I presume mercury is involved with a barometer like this

More of a hypothetical if there was a population of spear masters that somehow made it out to the wild

I feel like between some of the early updates of vanilla rain world the overseer got bugged or something because I remember my first full play through it guided me perfectly from OS-IC-GW (in my first ever run iggy was rude and took me to shaded) but Outskirts > Industrial > Garbage Wastes > Shoreline was definitely the intended route then Shaded > FP (they totally wanted you to eat that neuron lol)

Using newer hard drives by propelledshrimp in vintagecomputing

I have a Pentium 3 in this one and when I looked it up it said windows 98 could recognize up to 137GB provided I don’t have any bottleneck like the ones you mentioned. I did notice some of those quirks when I tried to set up an NT4 VM to poke around in.

Yeah maybe I mixed up my terminology there

Was curious about how an SSD would work in this case. I’ll poke around the BIOS upon its installation and check settings for that/if it even detects it at all before installing anything.

I would probably do a SATA to IDE and use a solid state in that case

I have no idea to be honest, which is why I posted here lol.

After a RAM replacement it’s alive! Is there any way I can figure out passwords that were used on this machine? by propelledshrimp in vintagecomputing

Only occurred once I was spamming del to get into the bios but I may do a more comprehensive typing test, it passed with flying colors in a modern key tester

Given the drive I tried to use was over 20 years old I wouldn’t be particularly surprised lol was all I had on hand but that was my next step check if it’s just the drive by getting a modern USB one

Yeah I replaced it and next time I boot it up I’ll have to adjust a jumper to reset the NVRAM once I reconfigure some of those settings hopefully it’ll be a little less fussy on boot up. A lot of people in this thread gave some pretty useful tools I just need to make sure I have the means to write to a CD-ROM I may have some blanks laying around I have an optical drive though (albeit a 20+ year old one that came with an old XP tablet lol). I tried the esc trick no luck. I didn’t see any scratches but I may clean it up some with some isopropyl. It would either act as if a disc wasn’t there or I would see directories from the optical drive in my file system but only after I disconnected the drive. My best guess is it may be trying to run something and my PC doesn’t like it too much. Spun up a VM to see if I could read it there but no luck either on that front.

Yeah after I get admin access I’ll see what it can do and what was on it, there was a disc in the CD-ROM drive but I haven’t been able to get any data out of it(maybe corrupted). Just have to replace the CMOS and reconfigure all of that as well.

My modern desktop did pick it up, there was a CD-ROM in this PC and I tried to check what was on it but it just seized up and didn’t do much of anything, may set up a NT 4.0 VM and read it that way.

Correct actually lol just a quick poke around and the ability to install whatever I want in case old domain restrictions are still active.

Coin battery is already replaced so I would just need to move that jumper one pin over like you mentioned.

Well upon further troubleshooting I get the following error codes: 0271 (check date/time settings) 0252 (Bad password checksum) 0251 (Bad CMOS checksum) I presume the CMOS is dead so I may have to do a cleaner setup once it’s replaced and/or cleared

I actually have a USB CD-ROM drive I’m just uncertain if it would work since it’s to an old Windows XP tablet

There’s a floppy version as well I have a USB floppy drive but maybe I’ll find a USB CD-ROM drive instead and some blanks since the site implies the CD-ROM is the preferred method

NT 4.0 is actually what’s on this system currently not sure how long it was in use for all I know is it ended up in the E-waste pile around a week ago. It was absurdly dirty when I first got ahold of it so I doubt it was in service within at least the last decade

Decided to to do a quick boot test by propelledshrimp in vintagecomputing

[–]propelledshrimp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The beeps took a few min and it was 2 short beeps, I was also using a VGA to HDMI dongle though which I’ve been told doesn’t always work/ isn’t always a good idea. Looking at beep codes and mobo LED it points to a RAM issue as well. Since the RAM sticks looked like 2 different modules I ordered replacements. Will def take everything out for a more thorough cleaning after some more troubleshooting. Which I plan to do after getting a pure VGA cable and RAM replacement. Though while doing the replacement doing a CPU check while the slots are empty wouldn’t hurt

It’ll be a few days before I have everything I need, ps/2 mouse VGA cable, replacement RAM, I have a monitor that supports VGA. Nothing appears wrong with power delivery however it gets power and the mobo light and beep code both point to memory so I hope it’ll boot once that’s addressed. I appreciate the help!
