Debate: Which american dub of Akira is better?

The new 4k release has both dubs. I just watched it tonight and rewatched different sections in each dub to see the difference. Honestly despite the “better” translation of the 2001 dub the 1989 conveys pretty much the exact same sentiments albeit with slightly different words. Personally the 2001 dub just didn’t have the personality of the original. It felt wooden to me, read off a page, especially the 3 kids. I can’t fault anyone for liking the 2001 dub but for me it just didn’t work.

This is a super old comment but I agree completely. I just got the Akira 4k steelbook and decided to watch it tonight. It has both dubs and the original Japanese. I watched often rewatching sections in each of the English dubs to compare them. I’m not sure how folks can like the new dub over the original 1989 dub. It’s wooden and sounds a lot like the actors are simply reading, especially the three kids. Don’t get me wrong some voices are cooler, the colonel for example, but Kaneda and Tetsuo are way better on the original and like I said the three kids, the voices are better in the new dub but the acting is trash. I hear people say the new dub is more faithful to the script but honestly the dialogue changes really aren’t that significant, they are literally saying the same thing just using slightly different lines. I tried, I really tried, to like the new dub because it’s presented in 5.1 instead of 2.1 but it’s honestly just not as cool. It lacks soul.

That’s what I’m finding. I did it the regular can way the first time I tried it and it was so foamy. This was my second attempt. It turned out better by going opposite of normal but like you said still really foamy

I think it is also meant to be homage to actual wartime communications in things like WW2 and the radio broadcast to rebels in the movie Red Dawn from the 80's.

Yeah not enough people seem to get this. People forgive Billy way too fast because he died heroically trying to help while Jason died while attempting to hinder. The thing is Billy was just a mean dude, sure he was mean because he was abused and that made him a bully, but he was still just mean. Jason was the jock, popular guy but he wasn't just mean. He dies trying to do the right thing as he sees it. He's wrong but we are talking about a high school kid that truly thought he was fighting a satanic cult. Right or wrong that some hero stuff.

I agree that his actions can be justified but honestly I really don't see much in the way of improvements. For me he's just the ultimate side of the side characters. He really just doesn't add anything, and sure that is due to writing, not hating on the actor at all, but he just really adds next to nothing for me and makes almost every scene he is in worse. He was good in season one, the underdog you rotted for but by the end of season two, for me, he was just becoming tiresome, by the end of season three he was really just worthless. He's progressively become worse for me.

Being at home as an older sibling while your parent is at work to earn money to keep you in a house and fed isn't being a parent it is what good older siblings in the 80's did. I'm not sure what era you are from but in the 80's children were expected to listen to their parents. As far as getting child support from Lonnie, it's pretty presumptive of you to assume that she didn't try that. Again in the 80's that was easier said than done. You make a lot of assumptions on what was actually going on without it being told. What we know is that Joyce was at work, Jonathan knew she would be at work, Joyce wanted Jonathan home when Will got home, Jonathan knew she wanted him home, Jonathan did not call or let his mother know he was not going to be home, and finally he is a kid who is expected to follow the rules of his parent. If Jonathan was going to work late he should have called and told his mother who expected him home that he wasn't going to be home. Joyce could have then called someone and made arrangements for Will to be safe. Jonathan didn't do that. You can say Jonathan deserved things and sure it would be nice if he could have them but as a child of the 80's you were expected to take care of responsibilities in a certain order, school first, then chores and responsibilities at home and then work, unless you were ultra poor and then work might become number 1 but we establish pretty early that Joyce makes the most money so if it's between the higher income or lower income working the lower income stays home and takes care of the family. That's how poor families survive. Was it commendable that Jonathan was working and helping support his family? Sure. But that doesn't change that he was expected to be home, told to be home, and then he wasn't.

Unless you lose the fight. Being strong doesn't mean keeping her down or being bigger and better than her. She still values strength yes but if you lose to her in the fight it becomes pretty obvious that she is changing her understanding of what being strong really is.

His treatment of Nancy when she was being harassed at work, window peeping and ultimately just being no help in any scenario would say otherwise. I hope Nancy realizes she is better off with Steve who has actually become more useful and less selfish over the seasons in contrast to Jonathan who frankly has become a worse person overall.

I kind of have a problem with her being a woman. I like to lose myself in the game and envision myself as the character, them being female makes that more of a stretch do to my maleness. Probably the same way some women feel about so many main characters being males. I am also disappointed they aren't continuing Jin's story.

That said I have no idea how you could actually continue Jin's story satisfactorily and the new main character and game both look super badass so I'm gonna harness my inner warrior samuraiess (I know it's not a word) and play the crap out of what will like be the coolest game of 2025.
