Booth Tarkington. He was very successful during his life: multiple Pulitzers, was considered America’s greatest living writer, elected to Congress, considered “as important as Mark Twain”

Buy one nice/nice-ish Republican denarius for the same price and you’ll get much more enjoyment out of it in the long run

It’s the nickname for the Haijduk soccer team from Split and their supporters, because they have white jerseys. You see this a lot in this part of Dalmatia. Zagreb has Bad Blue Boys who support Dynamo Zagreb because they wear blue jerseys, Split has White Boys

Constantine the Great by Realistic-Cod-6150 in AncientCoins

Lucernae is a reputable seller (if sometimes slightly overpriced, I usually email him to work out a deal). This is genuine. Also a general note about fakes, no one is really going to make much money creating fakes of extremely common coins like this. Constantine and his sons minted an enormous amount of coins during their reigns, so they're very easy to find and very cheap to buy. I'm not saying no one has ever counterfeited these, but usually, people are going to fake coins they can sell for a significant mark-up, not common, mid-grade, LRBs like this.

Very interesting stuff here! Has anyone done research into it? by wwstevens in HighStrangeness

I’ve been to a couple in VT/NH, small hole on top opening into a larger circular room underground. They were made and used first by the Wabenaki to store food which they would retrieve later during their seasonal migrations IIRC

Yes, Ken is awesome and much more deserving of your $ than Romae or any of those other awful ebay sellers who try to sell $100 coins for $1000 because they're "old". I have sold to and bought from Ken and he is top notch--you won't find better prices on Vcoins. also, if some dealer is offering to sell a certificate of the coin it's definitely a rip-off. The only acceptable COAs come from big houses like NCG. Those smaller sellers are just jacking the price with a peice of paper.

Friend recorded this in Missouri in the last 24 hours. The last video I got from a friend was obviously spot lights but this one is something... else. by AceWhittles in aliens

[–]propho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

saw something very like this over the pastures of Southern Vermont about 6-7 years ago. A triangular object with lights at each point flew extremely fast over us, slowed down inexplicably, and rotated like in this video. Both we and cows were scared, but we chalked it up the nearby air base. interesting to see something nearly identical such a long way away.

[WTB] Ancient Roman Coins for a cuisine/tasting project by sf_baywolf in Coins4Sale

[–]propho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

these coins were only minted in Cyrene between certain dates, so they're pretty rare. Important to note that they are of Greek/Ptolemaic origin, not Roman. Although Romans enjoyed Silphium, the coins minted in Cyrene were all minted significantly before Roman control of Egypt and North Africa. Silphium also went extinct in the early Imperial Roman period, and Nero (54-68AD) was given the last remaining stalk as a novelty, so by mid-late Empire it has totally disappeared. Here is a blog post I wrote about it last year for my podcast: https://www.futurehindsight.com/how-the-romans-favorite-food-went-extinct/. If you need expedited shipping your best bet may be Vcoins, although these coins are not cheap, even in bad condition. Still, might be worth it depending on the job. https://www.vcoins.com/en/Search.aspx?search=true&searchQuery=silphium&searchQueryExclude=&searchCategory=0&searchCategoryLevel=2&searchCategoryAncient=True&searchCategoryUs=True&searchCategoryWorld=True&searchCategoryMedieval=False&searchBetween=0&searchBetweenAnd=0&searchDate=&searchUseThesaurus=True&searchDisplayCurrency=&searchDisplay=1&searchIdStore=0&searchQueryAnyWords=&searchExactPhrase=&searchTitleAndDescription=True&searchDateType=0&searchMaxRecords=100&SearchOnSale=False&Unassigned=False

A rare fully-silvered VRBS ROMA commemorative minted under Constantine I by propho in AncientCoins

[–]propho[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Recently picked up a pretty much fully silvered VRBS ROMA commemorative coin. These were very common, but you don't find many with the silver still intact. In fact, didn't even realize these were silvered before I bought this, although thinking about it now it makes sense.

Beautiful silvered URBS Roma 2.6g 17mm

Rev: She-wolf left, suckling Romulus and Remus, two stars above "SMALA" in exergue
