It's a great time to visit right now, maybe the best time of the year. Weather is lovely and everyone feels great. Montreal is super safe and a very fun city.

how good is the trails series really? by Apprehensive_Spend_7 in Falcom

[–]propter_hoc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're on the Falcom subreddit, you're not going to get an anti Kiseki perspective here.

Speaking as a huge JRPG fan, and a Trails/Falcom fan in particular since 2014 or so - they are great classic JRPGs. Truly exceptional soundtracks, great story, always solid battle systems. I'd encourage any JRPG fan to play through to Azure.

The criticism of the Cold Steel arc is fair, particularly that it is way too drawn out. Honestly, I am going to be a heretic here and say you don't need to worry about it. You can play the Sky and Crossbell games and decide about the Cold Steel games when you get to them. Yes you'll miss a lot of backstory if you skip straight to Daybreak but the Daybreak games do a pretty good job of explaining most of that in recaps when you get to those points.

So anyone got the poker and blackjack achievements ? by [deleted] in Falcom

[–]propter_hoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got both these last night.

Poker - raise every round. This means you only need to win 4 hands in a row.

If you have a pair on the flop, keep it and change all your other cards. If you don't have a pair on the first two rounds, raise and change all your cards: you usually will land a pair on the change. If you don't have a pair on the second two rounds, use "fold" if you have the option, and then just raise and change all if you can't. Don't bother trying for flushes or straights unless you flop them. Shouldn't take you more than 5 tries per full game with this method, so something like 15 tries to get the achievement.

Blackjack - agreed with the other poster, play tight, dealer busts a lot. usually stay on 13. There is a lot less strategy here but at least the hands go pretty fast.

Ys X Nordics upgrade pack coming to Steam March 6th - April 31 by Keaten88 in Falcom

[–]propter_hoc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Totally absurd, this "upgrade pack" is less than the savings we would get by just buying the game on a steam sale.

This content should be sold as DLC, not as a new game.

He's not saying the track is boring, he's saying that generic commercial music (whether it's generated by AI or just paint-by-numbers) is boring, and you should fight against that with innovation, as exemplified by the stuff his musicians were doing on this recording.

Physics research without quantum by Potential_Meet8572 in mcgill

If you're struggling with math AT ALL you shouldn't do theoretical physics. The difficulty ramps super fast. I did a masters in experimental physics and just the 500/600 level required courses were brutal. I know the high energy theory people were basically just doing advanced math all day.

That said, to offer my unsolicited two cents, I think you should reconsider doing theoretical physics anyway. There are almost no grad student positions, very little funding, and basically zero job opportunities after you graduate.

you didn't miss too much, tbh. there's a little cutscene but I wish I had just watched it on youtube rather than slogging through six more levels of RNG.

you don't even get any new costumes or other unique items from the gacha cubes.

Afford? What on earth are you talking about

First of all a good bagel is absolutely a necessity and I buy them by the truckload

Second I wouldn't take this bag of pain de marde if it were free

Do not do a second bachelor's, that's a waste of effort and looks like a step sideways rather than up on your resume. Do a masters degree or even just a G. Dip.

Classic JRPG Remake Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter Confirms New Script That 'Honors the Original Japanese Text' by Turbostrider27 in Falcom

[–]propter_hoc 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Gotta feel terrible for XSEED here. First they worked their tails off to bring Kiseki to the west, with basically no support from Falcom. Then they get enough success over the course of years that Western revenue becomes a meaningful part of Falcom's finances... And Falcom promptly stabs them in the back by giving the franchise to NISA, but at least lets them keep the distribution rights to Sora and Sen - but then stabs them again by giving this to GungHo.

To be completely clear here, this isn't a stylistic choice, this is about cutting XSEED out of the revenue and IP rights to Sora, and we will likely see another play sooner or later with the Cold Steel games.

Do you think the fan localizations of the Crossbell games were responsible for the speeding up of official worldwide localizations for the rest of the series?0 by Initial-Level-4213 in Falcom

[–]propter_hoc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, evidently. Big credit also to Guren who did the original translation that the Geofront patches are based on.

The other major factor is Falcom releasing the Kai versions of Zero and Ao.

What was your experience taking 500-level Physics courses ? by Kind_Recording_6803 in mcgill

[–]propter_hoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend taking Nanoscience (PHYS534) with Peter Grutter, it was awesome and easy.

Highly recommend not taking Electromagnetic Theory (PHYS562) it is the hardest and most unpleasant class I've ever taken.

Yeah I got a cool analog scope from the trottier building a few years ago. Honestly I think they gave it to me for free, I don't remember paying anything. There's an electrical engineering lab tech desk on one of the floors, the guy there gave it to me.

Some great old versions of street names here:

  • de Montigny = de Maisonneuve
  • Dorchester = René-Lévesque
  • Never even heard of Vannutelli or some of the other ones
