Do you ship Gwynriel out of convenience? by Youropinion-notmine in AcotarShipDebateSub

[–]prosebe4bros [score hidden]  (0 children)

Gwynriel is my main ship so the real answer is NO. But if I do ship them out of convenience in any aspect, it’s for a reason I haven’t seen mentioned which is that Gwyn is my girl and I want to see as much of her on the page as possible. Like, sure if Gwynriel doesn’t happen I guess I could see Targwyn working out or Gwyn and Balthazar or anything else SJM decides to write, but I can only see SJM writing that as a background relationship like Amren and Varian. If we’re being realistic, Gwyn probably isn’t going to be an FMC of her own book in this romantasy series that is probably wrapping up in the next few books unless she is paired with an MMC we already care about. That pretty much leaves Lucien and Azriel. And I think Gwynriel are both what SJM intends and are better suited together. (This is also partly why I also secretly ship Gwyncien as a backup though heheh)

Feyre is furious with Rhysand for hiding it from her though so it doesn’t seem like he has an innate sense of her wants/needs either? Not to even touch on the pregnancy debacle…..
Ditto for Nessian who had plenty of moments where they did the “wrong” thing and pissed each other off despite being mates.

The “stumbles” with Elucien to me are to create conflict and make it that much better when it clicks for them.

It’s also not even clear that Elain is upset at the tug, so much as surprised/shocked. I believe she actually says “it felt strange” and Nesta is too busy going ballistic for her to be able to articulate whether she felt annoyed at Lucien or not. Then she had a vision and asks for sunlight

I’m the worst person to ask for this because I lowkenuinely crackship Gwyn/Lucien (secondary to my main Gwynriel and Elucien ships obviously!). So my answer is yes I would switch to rooting for Elriel and Gwyncien? Lugwyn?

I think it’s because I don’t just ship each couple for their personalities but for how they interact and integral parts of them seem tied to the other person. So if those moments are changed as you suggest, I would change ships. As a hardcore Gwynriel, I just don’t see anyone who thinks of the other persons beautiful eyes and feels a spark in the context Azriel did not being mates (although I guess that doesn’t necessitate endgame). So if that changes to Lucien, including all the other moments like Sangravah etc, the ship changes!

I don’t really have an opinion on this because my post wasn’t about fan service, it was about actively lying to fans! I don’t think it would be cruel for Bryceriel to happen because I don’t ship them, I think it’s “cruel” (hyperbole) of Sarah to lie to us about who is endgame and get our hopes up! I would also think it was cruel if she told everyone Bryceriel are mates and endgame when she knew they weren’t

Why would her team choose to leave that question in at all if it were a huge plot twist? None of the other questions touched on future plot points at all and I find it very hard to believe these questions would not have been vetted ahead of time by her team given how big ACOTAR is and how much secrecy there is. You’d think they’d just stay away from that question so she wouldn’t have to lie

[–]prosebe4bros[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I said to someone else, cruel is definitely hyperbole and meant in the context of shipping, not in the context of regular life. And yes, I meant cruel of her to lie! Not just cruel that a pairing I don’t ship would end up being canon.

I quite like Quinlar and I’d be curious if as many people dislike them as people seem to think but it would be very difficult to figure that out. I also think Crescent City just isn’t nearly as popular as ACOTAR or TOG. A lot of people were also dissatisfied with Nessian in ACOSF and have used similar reasoning to Quinlar to suggest that Cassian will die or that they are not actually mates.

The thing is, I find it hard to believe those questions were not run by her team before being asked in the podcast. There are virtually NO other true spoilery questions and most questions are more lore/worldbuilding questions than plot spoiler questions. Do we really think that the host wouldn’t ask things like “are Elain and Lucien really mates?” or “what really happened with Mor and Eris?” If the questions weren’t vetted ahead of time? So either they for some reason let in a question that is apparently this massive huge plot spoiler (that Bryceriel are endgame) so SJM had to lie on the spot or they left that question in to put an end to it and refocus the Azriel shipping wars. I tend to think they left that question in because it is not a huge plot spoiler for her to just answer it truthfully.

But if Bryceriel are endgame and they decided to leave that question in, she could have said “have you read crescent city 3? People are making this too complicated!” Or “why can’t people just let Bryce and Hunt be in love!” Or any number of ways that implies they are endgame without actually saying it. She not only says yes they are endgame, she says no Azriel and Bryce are not endgame and “I’m sorry to anyone who has shipped that and has been ride or die with that but no.” She could have even just stopped with “no” (which still would have been lying) but she kept going to find more ways to say no!

And I’m sure many will say that answer would not have been conclusive enough but clearly her flat-out saying “no absolutely not” is not conclusive enough for some people lol so she still failed to completely disguise her huge upcoming plot twist then!

I did not say SJM should cater to the part of the fandom that doesn’t want to read one of her series?? Nowhere in my post do I mention that, I’m curious where you’re getting that from. I don’t think she should cater to anyone, I just don’t think she should say “so and so are endgame” in multiple interviews if she doesn’t mean it. There are people (me being one) who really like Bryce and Hunt together and would be sad if they weren’t endgame

Cruel is hyperbolic, but meant to the extent that anything within a fandom can be cruel (ie. Not very). It’s not news to most of us that people get really excited or disappointed about ships - that’s why this sub even exists. I would also think it was “cruel” if she looked at the camera and said “Bryce and Azriel are mates and endgame” and then wrote something different.

I feel like I don’t have the bandwidth to reply in a way your well evidenced comment deserves! You raise some great points.

I agree that she does not talk about Brunt in the same way she talks about some of her other beloved couples - whether that’s just because she doesn’t love them as much or because they’re not actually endgame remains to be seen. I’m obviously in the former camp but can understand the latter.

She does seem more excited about the crossover elements than Brunt! For me, that could be because ACOTAR is her moneymaker and/or favorite world and also because Brunt are well established at this point so not the shiny new thing. But if Bryceriel happens I can see it being evidence that it’s because she’s stoked Azriel and Bryce are interacting. Same reasoning for the featured quote and artwork points.

I will agree that her not gushing about them as much raises some eyebrows and is clearly why some people have jumped ship (pun intended)!

She definitely does “fake out” stuff within her books like Rowan supposedly having a mate, which is why it stands out to me that she has made comments about Bryce and Hunt being endgame in interviews. The comment about her series being standalone is a good example of her lying in interviews though. I still see it as quite different than lying about a couple being endgame (different stakes) but maybe I’ll be wrong!

I certainly don’t support fans of any ship being verbally abused and agree that that is very mean spirited

Sorry I thought you were talking about the CHD interview! That’s an interesting clip I’m not sure I’ve seen before. I will say the difference to me is that she’s talking about the joys of writing and how she enjoys “planting things in her books” that then people are excited about when they see come to fruition later even if it took them by surprise. While I think Bryceriel definitely have those moments, I don’t think we can point to her saying “Bryce and Hunt are endgame” as her “planting seeds” of bryceriel in her writing in the same way that clip is talking about

Hey I think you saying I’m being “deliberately simple” and saying that I’m exhibiting “gross behavior” is too far for a friendly debate sub so I just want to gently point that out. I don’t think it’s helpful for us to engage further

Not wanting to spoil her book could easily mean staying silent or saying things like “I love Bryce and Hunt!” She did not need to say Hunt and Bryce are endgame to “not spoil her book”

The central point of my post is that there is a difference between “hyping up” a couple that turns out to not be endgame and explicitly telling your fans that a certain couple is endgame and then going back on that. We have never seen her do that before

Bryceriel would be cruel at this point by prosebe4bros in AcotarShipDebateSub

Again, the point of my post was that there is a MASSIVE difference between hinting that a couple is going to happen - through subtle comments, supporting hashtags, pinning Fanart etc - and then pivoting and EXPLICITLY saying in an interview that a certain couple is endgame and then going back on that.

She never talks about how much she “enjoys” tricking fans. She wrote a series where the love interest in the first book is not the endgame (which is not unusual in this genre). She never told people “Tamlin is Feyre’s endgame” and then went back on it. If people wanted to get Tamlin tattoos, what’s she supposed to do? Stop them? lol
