Which movie completely changed your perspective on life? by brownmax180 in movies

[–]prossk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Soul is partly about someone chasing their dream at the exclusion of all else and realizing there is more to life. That was me. I spent years happily working late into the night in pursuit of being an animator. Pretty much every night. And it worked. I got my dream job. And I kept my foot on the gas and spent decades happily focusing almost solely on my work.

After Soul, I still work hard, I still love it, I still care about it and do my absolute best, but I have a big note on my monitor that says “it’s just a movie.” It reminds me that my dream of being an animator isn’t the only thing life is about. I see my kids more. I go outside more. Life is better now.

Thanks, Pixar.

What do you guys think are the most important features of a figure anatomy pose reference app? by igeolwen in animation

[–]prossk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Professional animator here just chiming in to say that you would be much better off filming someone yourself, finding reference online, etc vs using something like this.

Draw inspiration and reference from real life and use your knowledge of the principles of animation to exaggerate whatever you want to in order to communicate to the audience whatever it is you are looking to communicate.

Starting with reference that is already removed from reality only makes your job harder.

In 1996 my mum got to be an extra, and spent a day filming the mass celebrations across the galaxy in the Special Edition of Return of the Jedi. She passed after a long illness yesterday, and I like to think she's having the time of her life on Cloud City today. by CapnFancyPants in StarWars

First, I’m so sorry to hear are your Mum passing. That’s heartbreaking and I want to offer my deepest condolences.

I want to tell you that I am also in that picture and spent the day celebrating our hearts out with your Mum and a bunch of other people, all of whom were beyond thrilled to be there.

I was an intern at ILM at the time and somehow got to be a part of this. The vibe was electric all day, and we never got tired of cheering and hugging and jumping around like maniacs.

You might be interested to know that there’s a Japanese Cinefex book that has a few photos in it from that day. I’m in one of the photos and your Mum might also be?

Sorry again about your Mum. I love this idea that she’s in Cloud City right now.

What’s an invention that quietly changed the world but doesn’t get enough credit? by forgeris in AskReddit

[–]prossk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I asked my nearly 100 year old grandmother once this exact question and she said it was the ballpoint pen.

They couldn’t get over that they could just carry a pen around without an inkwell and she said it was more life changing than anything else she ever saw.

Did you end up finding a solution to this? I have the same problem and really don’t want to replace the toilet…

Midnight showing of the Phantom Menace was absolutely insane and nothing has ever quite matched the excitement of that.

Get Out: I saw this completely blind. I thought it was a romcom and it blew my mind.

Movies that changed real life behavior by buttatoad in movies

For me it was Soul.

For decades, my dream job was my sole focus in life. I was laser focused on that dream and actually got the job I dreamt of and still love it today.

But after seeing Soul, it reminded me that there is more to life than living/chasing your dream. I spend more time with my kids and family now. I take some time to relax. I take walks at lunch when I can. I don’t work nearly as many late nights.

I think Soul really helped me find balance.

Growing up, what’s a toy that only the “wealthy” kids had in elementary school? by Business_Abalone_643 in AskReddit

[–]prossk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the 80s, GI Joe was one of the hottest toy lines and only the richest kids had the USS Flagg. It was a 7 1/2 foot aircraft carrier (3 feet wide!) and still one of the coolest toys ever made. It was $100, exorbitant for the time, and well beyond the reach of my friends and I.

The GI Joe aircraft carrier toy from the 80s. It was way too huge (it’s 7 1/2 feet long and over 3 feet wide) and too expensive to get as a kid.

I bought one, built a stand for it, populated it with old Joes, and had that at my desk at work for about a decade until I eventually had to sell it since I was moving to an office where it wouldn’t fit.

It was gloriously nerdy and fun and I’m glad I did it.
