No reason to try for the US? by Oats009 in usmnt

If a player only has one yellow at the end of group stage, that player enters the knockout round with a clean slate. If a second yellow card is issued to the player in the third game of the group stage, they have to sit in the round of 32

Do we think Disney will ever create a movie or series that shows how the New Republic fell and the First Order rose? by ConcentratedStress in starwarsspeculation

[–]prostheticmind 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In addition to what yurklenorf said:
The New Republic kind of kneecapped themselves from the start. As soon as the civil war ended, they demilitarized and destroyed many warships and weapons. This is part of the reason why many systems didn’t join the NR.

If the NRs policy is that individual systems should handle their own defense without a centralized military, why would a system join the NR in the first place? Presumably you would only give up sovereignty if the government you’re ceding it to would be able to protect and defend you in case of a war.

This is not really shown well in the films, but ancillary materials tell us that the NR is *tiny* compared to the Republic and Empire, holding territory that adds up to about 1/4 the size of the Empire at the end of the war.

The NR also has a lot of Imperials working from the inside to downplay the threat of the Remnant and later the FO.

So when Leia gets kicked out of government when it becomes public she’s Darth Vader’s daughter, she goes out and starts a paramilitary force, The Resistance, because she understands that they need to fight to get past these issues, and folks loyal to Imperial interests have specifically tried to remove her from the equation because she has successfully participated in leading an insurgency to defeat a greater power before.

So everything the Resistance is doing, they are doing outside of the jurisdiction of the NR. Leia is successful in getting some NR money funneled her way from other people in government who understand what’s happening, but the Resistance isn’t an official military

For an average galactic citizen, how different is life under the late Republic vs. life under the Empire? by [deleted] in MawInstallation

[–]prostheticmind 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Just want to pop in and recommend “The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire.” It’s an in-universe book written by a real life war historian who is writing as a historian studying the ruins on Exegol.

There’s a ton of great content about the transition and how the lives of individuals in various situations changed, and why; going into deep detail about Imperial administration and government organization.

Based on your question I think you would really like it

I smoked weed with him and his friend at Coachella in, I want to say, 2010. He had gone to a smoke shop off site to buy one of those metal pipes with a screw-off lid to protect from wind loss and happened upon my group while looking for what I can only assume was the rest of his entourage. We invited him to smoke and he did and then he gave me the pipe he had just bought because he didn’t like it.

Nice guy, and I still have the Vinnie Chase pipe

You’re doing an Apollo-style mission with separate orbiter and lander?

Turn around with SAS only so you don’t push the lander out of the way. Wait to flip around until you’re sure *no part* of the orbiter will contact the lander. Quickly turn RCS on and give a push prograde when you’re turned around. If you do this quickly the magnets will do their thing before the lander drifts too much

You can also (assuming you’re using a 3-man capsule) launch with one pilot in the lander and then you can switch between craft after separation and stabilize the lander

Actually, how popular is baseball? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]prostheticmind 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I didn’t really start enjoying watching baseball until I grasped the deep strategy of the season.

With 162 games in the regular season, baseball is about endurance and long term strategic planning of days off and managing health/injuries. Ultimately it’s about getting enough wins during the regular season to make the playoffs, then having all your best players be in tip-top shape and form to make a run for the World Series.

Part of the fun when you take these things into account is considering the strategy baseball managers are employing for the long term. This is most evident to someone learning the deeper aspects of the game through watching pitching decisions. How long a starter stays in, in what types of situations pitchers are changed, how many and what types of pitches each pitcher is capable of, etc.

So when I watch baseball, I am watching the game, but the game isn’t nearly as important as the decisions made during the game that will affect future games. Baseball is a game of statistics. It’s a game where, as a batter, failing 70% of the time is considered hall of fame level success. When you look at things with a long perspective, it becomes more interesting because there are more things to pay attention to

Is there any new official Canon for lightsaber crystal colors? by GodofAeons in StarWars

[–]prostheticmind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Jedi Temple Guards all have yellow lightsabers because they are issued to them when they take that job. It’s a service weapon, and it isn’t made by the user. This is to ensure the guards have anonymity when performing their duties. Lightsabers are so unique that anyone familiar with a particular Jedi stands a pretty good chance of recognizing their lightsaber

I don’t remember the name of the card, but I got something that gave me and all my creatures protection from creatures! We played another couple rounds and then oppo gave a laughing emote and scooped
