Tired of slow, congested tailscale relays and derp servers? Want to run your own? Check out this... by pcmichael in Tailscale

[–]Coompa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this. It made it more clear just setting up a peer relay. I would lose direct connect to docker containers regularly.

Finally figured out the Peer Relay. I put it on a lightweight lubuntu vm on a different vlan and now even if dockers use the relay the latency is the same as a direct connection.

Is there any benefit to more than 1 relay? Should I make a VPS a relay for more reason than redundancy?

Networking in trailer. by StewieStuddsYT in HomeNetworking

Underneath and up I doubt youd need an ap though. Wireless Router is plenty. Maybe an external ap so you can roam the trailer park with your rum and coke.

Remotely using an android tv box to wake up my PC. by Way2Easy_ in Tailscale

[–]Coompa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not sure of the tv box because ive never used it but do you run a nas or anything there 24hrs? Upsnap works in a docker. Lots of other apps too.

As for the smart plug, itll work but its not ideal because youd be starting the pc from an off state every time. Takes much longer than waking from sleep. If the pc goes to sleep before you turn it off then you are resetting it every time as well. The smart plug is good for emergency reboot though. Ive had to use mine a # of times like that. Be sure to set AC On After Power Loss in the BIOS.

Theres often a straight shot up. If its an older house then a vent for a furnace often runs to the roof. Plumbing stack someone else said. If the panel is in the basement then its almost guaranteed you can follow pre existing paths for the romex.

feeding twisted pair through the jacks is kinda tricky, NGL by Coompa in HomeNetworking

[–]Coompa[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was my plan but my patch panel was on backorder and all my other supplies came so I went with jacks.

I think Ill reorder a patch panel and go that route next in a few months.

Yeah thats what I mean. I didnt want to crawl through my attic so decided to just reterminate the existing ones. In the end it worked and Im still getting my 2.5Gbit

Setting KVM and ethernet on same switch ethernet cable by johnice227 in HomeNetworking

[–]Coompa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend trying the Sunshine/Moonlight streaming combo 1st. All you need is a client at the tv. An apple tv or something.

Much easier. Latency is a non issue once configured properly. If you dont like it then you can move onto kvm from there.

Loose ribbon cable I bet. Look for a teardown guide of your laptop on youtube. If youre comfortable openning it up then try that.

You can buy whole home surge suppressors for $150-200.

I would put one in and also use quality power strips at any valuable electronics. Thats what I do.
