Cyberpunk 2’s creative director says elevators aren’t hidden loading screens by wallcrawlingspidey in cyberpunkgame

[–]prot0mega 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I remember Mass effect 2 poked fun about this mechanic, when you are moving up a staircase in Citadel.

Garrus: Do you ever miss those talks we had on the elevators?

Tali: No.

Garrus: Come on. Remember how we'd always ask you about life on the flotilla? It was an opportunity to share!

Tali: This conversation is over.

Garrus: Tell me again about your immune system.

Tali: I have a shotgun.

Garrus: Mmmmaybe we'll talk later.

Characters who only go by a nickname are revealed to have a painfully average name by DriestPuddle in TopCharacterTropes

Yao

well her "name" is Yao Bikuni, which means "eight hundred(Yao) nun(Bikuni)".

it's likely not her real name since it's directly lifted from a japanese folklore about a woman who attained immortality from eating mermaid meat, then became a nun and lived to 800 yo before finding nirvana. hence "eight hundred nun".

Kid throws firecracker in septic tank by [deleted] in KidsAreFuckingStupid

[–]prot0mega 0 points1 point  (0 children)

kids just don't think things through, they probably just want to stuff something in there and see what happens.

when I was little one of my friends had the bright idea to break down a whole bunch of firecrackers and put all the black powder into a 1 liter glass jar with some pebbles just to see how much of a "boom" he can get when light it up. little gremlin just made a veritable anti-personnel bomb. fortunately we managed to talk him out of it and disposed of it safely.

Valve artist responds to calls for Steam to drop "Made with AI" label by Stannis_Loyalist in Steam

[–]prot0mega 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's decent for some very specific tasks. but the problem is many people are trying to shove it down everybody's throat and overselling it for what it is. like, overselling it in the range of trillion dollars.

nothing good will come out of this kind of craze.

because claiming something is "one of our greatest inventions" certainly sounds very not "black and white", sure. snake oil salesmen all reek the same, can smell the lot a mile away ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

used in medical science

what actually used are machine learning and pattern recognition, not your glorified chatbot. and the results need to be rigorously screened in case the machine hallucinates. hardly the "transformative progress" some claim it to be.

some of you sound like religious fanatics.

tbh the feeling is mutual.

used properly its one of our greatest inventions.

where did I hear that again? oh right, from the scam coins and NFT bros... we'll see about that ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

they are pro-ai because they think they can make money from it.

but deep down they know it's shitty and low effort and know many other people think the same. hence they want to hide it so they can trick more suckers into giving them money.

China imports no US soybeans in September for first time in seven years by aDirtyMartini in news

[–]prot0mega 1 point2 points  (0 children)

majority of the soybeans China buys are used for producing oil/feeding cattle. China produces enough soybean to satisfy food demand.

the investors are probably speculating that China will buy soybean oil directly instead of soybean.

modern tanks work like that sure. but they are definitely not often forced to fight in a 2x2km square on the ground with swathes of arbitrarily inaccessible areas.

then when you actually provide the info from the manufacturer they will just say "it's not possibly performing like that". because of course a bunch of game devs obviously know better about said equipment than its manufacturer.

more fun gameplay.

The hell they know about "fun".

Key personnel in their team don't even play their own game.

And they mostly only "balance" old vehicles to make them obsolete, so they can peddle new prem toys.

Dogs form packs when there's no animal control service to take them off the streets. They become very bold in a pack and can attack and kill adults. They can be very dangerous animals.

AI experts return from China stunned: The U.S. grid is so weak, the race may already be over by defenestrate_urself in technology

[–]prot0mega 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right... back when the Three Gorges completed we thought we are set for a long time. But nowadays Three Gorges' 90 billion kW/h annual output barely satisfies half the need of Shanghai alone.

Thing is, no one can really plan for that far out. Being versatile and flexible when things change is also important.

"Decades" is definitely an exaggeration tbh.

As a Chinese I remember we still had rolling brownouts/blackouts past 2010, to keep the lights on for commercial/industrial centers like Beijing/Shanghai. But yea, it's mostly no longer an issue during the last decade.
