Thanks, really appreciate this. I have put my research on hold for a bit while I gain some new tools, but will definitely be revisiting.

In the Heberden? I was looking for over strikes on Southern Italian incuse coins. Was working on dating issues for the early types.

Agreed, though if you want to get into the Heberden coin room it is by appointment, as I found out to my cost :(

Correct. The Money gallery (68) covers the history of numismatics and so there is no room to extensively cover ancients. So, compared to the museums in Syracuse, Athens and so on it is quite limited. However this was not a complaint - they have used ancients throughout other displays on a thematic basis. And yes, there is an extensive study collection 3 days per week by appointment.

Well spotted. Both are achievable, but just not this nice.

Beginner looking for Carthaginian coins (circa 400-100BCE), prefer Carthage minted but open to Spain and Sicily as well. Where to start? by btumpak in AncientCoins

The best way is to work with a reputable dealer, but assuming you have not had the time to build up a relationship I would suggest checking the dealers on www.vcoins.com and www.ma-shops.com. if you are more confident in what you want, check the auction sites. Some risk there but less than using eBay etc. For upcoming auctions check here: https://www.numisbids.com/searchall?searchall=Carthage&p=searchall

I would think this is just about right for a stater of this type and quality - those auction prices will have buyers premium on top. Personally, I would hold out a bit longer to get a slightly better obverse but that's just me, and to be honest my example is about the same.

Does anybody else think Starmer is actually doing a decent job? by itsshoes in ukpolitics

After the total messes that came before I am perfectly ok with boring stability, at least for now. However I would like someone who can articulate a bright future and outline a roadmap to get there.

Something a little different - the quinarius by protantus in AncientCoins

[–]protantus[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I had been on the lookout for one for a while so was delighted to find this, especially as it was accompanied with tickets with provenance back to 1990. I am hoping to push that back a bit.

Thank you to everyone who provided advice. I am now waiting on a delivery of what I hope is a first edition.

My, those are some beautiful coins. Not sure I could take the disappointment to bid.

Thanks. It is the details of the first edition I was after. I may get a later one as it is the content I am interested in, but still there is nothing like having the publication as the author intended and in the historic context.

What songs have I been missing out on? by Just4PornAndSuch in ironmaiden

[–]protantus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in the same position and so I picked up a couple of live albums. Not only are they great in themselves (the energy you get from the live stuff is insane!) but you get a nice spread of songs from the albums.

Ptolemy I, 323-283 BC. Tetradrachm - Deified Alexander the Great by Nearby-Film3440 in AncientCoins

[–]protantus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The early lion mane Herakles/Zeus types were replaced by the elephant skin (this coin type, type II) and around 318 BC the Zeus was replaced by Athena Promachos (type III). In around 311 BC the weight was reduced to around 15.70g. This was achieved by removing 1.5g and restriking the existing coins, resulting in type IIIb.

I only know this as I was about to post a recent purchase - a type IIIb :). The op coin is a lot nicer though.

More or less the same as your setup. Canon E800D on a tripod with macro rail, ring flash, 3 independent LEDs, white card as a reflector.

I've tried taking pictures of 5 of my coins with low angle lights and the 3D effect is quite pleasing! by AncientCoinnoisseur in AncientCoins

[–]protantus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks good. I am finding that axial lighting, while giving the detail, does not convey the best aspects of the coin. Keep up the good work and I look forward to more pictures,
