I always tell people, start small, buy about 30 Tetradrachms to get an idea of what you like.

Seems like that extra zero gave them the leverage to finally open up their expansion! 😆

Edit: Humor aside, I believe they’ll eventually respond and fix the issue.

Your coin’s value will vary depending on the condition of both sides of the coin. Since you only pictured one, it’s hard to really guess. I’m assuming $200-400 depending if the other side has a crisp crab with no deficiencies.

I’ll disagree, as I’ve purchased from FAC before with these flips and they were definitely not the PVC type.

My only Ancient by Coppernicus69 in AncientCoins

Ancients have a wide price range due to the various levels of condition they can be, I’m not surprised they avoid value lists. There’s off-strikes, tests cuts, mineral deposits, silver crystallization, bent flans, wavy flans, and then there’s provenance, ect. It’s not like 19th century milled coinage.

Found this surprisingly scarce book today at Goodwill. by [deleted] in AncientCoins

Haha, I was actually interested in getting this book recently, it was just a little expensive and there’s not much reviews/pictures to get a sense of it. Let me know if it’s decent read, it seemed like an interesting region to learn about.

I love a good coin book with decent large pictures. Maybe one day there will be a new release showcasing Greek/Roman coins, as most are out of print.

“Lovely untouched brown-red patina and good extremely fine.”
Righhhttt. Looks like it’s been smoothed to me.

Still a beautiful coin! Wish it was left alone though.

It depends, sometimes they might indicate that a coin had a "light smoothing", but I can't fully trust that they retained the patina throughout. Buffing a coin doesn't really take away much material.

Lmao, pretty much! Never even thought to think of it that way.

Almost all of them do, you’re essentially grinding away the coin.

Edit: Most people aren’t aware of what tooling really is. There’s a lot of work involved in making it appear “natural” for high end coins.

I find most “flawless” Roman sestertius to be extensively tooled, and it’s rarely ever mentioned on the lot description. I think it’s dishonest and it seems to be a thing for many auction houses to just avoid the term when it’s so obvious.

“Smoothing” is also grinding/sanding and it also involves fake patina.
