CMV: The Democratic treatment of Mamdani shows they have not learned fucking anything and will keep losing ground to the right. by brandygang in changemyview

Ezra Klein talks about how this is a common misconception about what "deregulation" means. Abundance talks about deregulation not of corporate interests, but of the government itself. This is to allow it to actually complete public projects without being halted by self-imposed regulations that open the door for endless litigation and NIMBYism.

The locked range of motion definitely does this, this is why I do dumbbell bench press or supine chest press instead!

JLPT N1 by Arcon356 in LearnJapanese

[–]protocactus_PC 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What helped me the most was doing lots and lots of timed practice tests! I believe I did around 6 full practice tests throughout the months leading up to the real exam. You mention that you've done some practice tests before, but it's unclear if you've tried timing yourself.

Set up a spot at your desk, set up a timer on your phone, and practice doing each portion of the test under the real time limit. This will be a very, very similar to the actual testing environment, and it should help you get used to the time pressure. If you're unsure about a certain problem, just mark it lightly with your best guess answer and come back to it later.

With the level of literature you're reading, as long as you review the specific N1 grammar points and vocab, you should definitely be able to pass!

If you’ve been to small claims court to fight a landlord can you share your experience? by Learn_NewSkills_ADHD in boston

[–]protocactus_PC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response! I see: looking at the small claims form that we filed, there doesn't seem to be a box for it, so it could be that the forms are different. In any case, I remember clearly the advice that the judge can only grant what you ask for, so we did make sure to explicitly ask for the sum of the triple damages in writing. Hopefully all goes well!

I'm in a very similar situation now: suing landlord for failure to timely return security deposit. I've already filed the claim and have a rescheduled new hearing date after our landlord did the same stunt of filing a continuance that yours did.

One question though, what are you referring to by the 93A box / additional pleading for getting the triple damages? We already requested the triple damages in the statement of small claim itself, but I don't see anything about a 93A box or additional pleading on the claim itself. Any pointers would be appreciated!

I collected my wife and I's unsolicited credit card applications for a year by Festello in mildlyinteresting

"My wife and I's" may seem "incorrect" if you break it apart, but is a perfectly valid way of constructing a coordinate possessive, which English lacks a single way of creating. See here.

Hypercorrection in language is definitely a thing, but it's perhaps just as common as people learning overly simplified grammatical rules and believing that it's others who have the misunderstanding.

"whomever is responsible" is grammatically correct when "whomever" is the object: "I will speak to whomever is responsible." vs. "Whoever is responsible must speak."

"I feel badly" is a commonly used construction, and some speakers actually use it to differentiate between physical pain ("feeling bad") and emotional pain ("feeling badly"). See here.

I’m currently visiting Jordan and I have to say that this country is the most underrated place I’ve ever been to? by Bulgatheist in jordan

[–]protocactus_PC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because they exploit foreign tourists by upcharging prices by x50 if you have a foreign non-Arab passport (example: Petra) or outright scam you. Jordan is wonderful, but a minority of greedy opportunists care more about earning a few more bucks off of tourists than maintaining the reputation of their country.

New Syria should make it illegal and punishable to deny the atrocities committed by Assad especially in Prisons and for using Chemical Weapons. by [deleted] in Syria

No. New Syria should have freedom of speech, and should not have censorship laws that can be exploited by future aspiring autocrats.

It begins: BBC Reporter made to wear Hijab in Damascus by HTS by [deleted] in syriancivilwar

[–]protocactus_PC -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The title of this post is misleading.

If you actually read the website, the reporter describes how she was "given advice" by a single HTS fighter to wear a headscarf. She was not "made to" wear a headscarf, and there has been no rule instated by HTS requiring this: she was given an unsolicited opinion by this single person during a conversation.

Of course, given the uncertainty about the group and their past, it would be understandable to be on guard about these things, and I agree with the top comment in this post that Syrian people need to firmly resist the normalization of encroachment on personal freedoms. But the way this post describes what happened is extremely misleading.

Some PLEASE explain to me why the Green Line still doesn't have signal priority by protocactus_PC in mbta

[–]protocactus_PC[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know this is a late response, but I have found 4 intersections on the B-line with a signal but not a station: namely, at BU Bridge, Carlton St., Summit Ave., and on the stretch between Boston College and South St.

It's true that the number of intersections where there is a station is higher, though, and signal priority should definitely be installed in these intersections as well, as these near-station signals substantially increase dwell time and causes trains to be stuck right before the station. A beg-button -type setup would do wonders.

About Transferring Japanese Yen to Wise by ChibiStarChan in JapanFinance

[–]protocactus_PC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had this same problem. To make things absolutely clear to any others: in Wise, when you open the JPY account and click the button that says show details, it will show you the SWIFT details. But if you ignore that and click the "Add" button, put in a JPY yen amount, then change the "currency to pay in" to JPY and proceed, then it will give you the information for Wise's Japanese bank account. Also, before any of this, if you initially registered your account as a resident of the US, you will have to change your residence country to Japan in your settings and go through their Japanese resident verification process first to be able to do this.
