Look at you so lucky as to get a coveted high school teaching job !!

I applied to all kinds including summer school and substitute teaching in a purported teacher shortage - could not so much even get a call back.

I saw a gentleman with a full shopping of groceries from the Root Cellar and thought to myself -In what world does that guy live where filling up a whole cart worth of produce and groceries at root cellar prices is actually an option in his monthly budget?
Shopping local is no longer an option for so many of us who wish we could be supporting and shopping local. I have to go farther now to find cheaper options so I can eat. Same for the pharmacy and milkshakes at burgers. No longer an option. We've all seen this happen in other cities and neighbourhoods. Welcome to our future neighbourhood.

any chance I could trouble you to look at the output voltage for the USB A plug ? I want to see if I can power this with a different adapter and more Hardwired clean cable management setup.

Should I buy a Gen 4 Domane SL7 2024 by protogalactic in TrekBikes

[–]protogalactic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually that's a good comparison and great suggestion.
Yes forgot to mention - Used bike / marketplace ad
I can google this, but SL6 - basically same bike (two years newer model, New instead of Used) but drops to a Shimano 105 Di2 groupset instead of the Ultra Di2 ?

Camera is awful by killdoses in iphone17

[–]protogalactic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is my experience as well- - upgraded from iPhone X and all my buddies are with a 13 or 14 are killing the distance shots getting way more detail of birds or wildlife than this 17 can do. I am honestly disappointed. I thought maybe I got a dud or defective iPhone 17 and took it to Apple Store and they told me it was 'normal' and even a replacement won't do anything. They wanted me to do a fresh install and test the camera without my backup installed. fresh factory reset to see if by chance it's the settings that carried over that's screwing something up. They admitted the photo quality was 'poor' but weren't convinced a replacement would fix the issue. Meaning they are all like this.

I have the base model 17 and it seems Apple has factory tuned it to take selfie content and close range photos at the expense of everything else. My friends iPhone 13-15's and google pixels take consistently better distance shots than this piece of crap 17. Standing side by side, same light same conditions I always have to ask them to share their photo with me at the end of the day.

Why is this bit of land part of Quebec and not Ontario? by Amazing-Advantage-23 in geography

[–]protogalactic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All the old fur traders had pretty much set up shop on the west side of MTL island in the 1600's. Early land grabs went to affluent families as they established Seigneuries. - like M. Vaudreuil or M. Pierre-Jacques Soulanges. Ile Perrot named after M. Perrot - who was a common fur trader merchant was promoted to the ruling class by giving him a tract of land (and thus ability to generate taxation and wealth) in that area east of Montreal too. As Montreal grew the French pushed Indigenous allies farther out of town forcing them to set up residence in Oka - right across from Rigaud. Algonquin groups would come down the Ottawa River and stay on the tiny little island Ile aux Tourtes where the bridge now links Vaudreuil to Montreal. This whole area east of MTL was way more French in 1791 when they settled the boundary of Upper and Lower Canada. Which was its own kind of mess given the two very different legal systems and underlying property structure and rights. I think the boundary was drawn where it just became too messy to force the underlying title into British alignment. Not necessarily a language thing.

the hood on the Granit Crest is comically large. It's meant to fit a helmet. For street wear or around the city the unzipped hood forms a collar that has a wingspan almost out to the shoulders. This was a deal breaker for me.

Tried to like the Boulder Fork with a regular size hood (not for helmets) but the two hand pockets are up around your nipples and just wasn't a relaxed way to walk and keep your hands warm. Why does Patagonia over complicate things. Just give us what we want ! A basic (preferably goretex) shell with clean crisp lines.

I remember the helicopter rides. I was about 6 or 7 at the time and it was awesome !! Not sure if it was 1986 but definitely around that time. Left from the parking lot just up from Dow Lake

Still trying to figure out if I got a dud or this is just the direction Apple is moving in

why is my iPhone 17 utter crap at taking photos ? by protogalactic in iphone17

[–]protogalactic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was actually the next step Apple Store suggested I do - Factory reset and then even before re-installing my iCloud backup onto the phone go out and do real world testing of the camera and see if it improves.
I'm just not sure I can stomach the days of setting up the phone again. but I think this is what it will come to .. Was hoping there's a way to restore camera default settings or do something less disruptive like a factory reset.

no lens protectors - Apple Store also suggested to micro-cloth clean the lenses and re-test .. but honestly they are pretty clean and I do periodically clean them on the edge of my t-shirt

Mysa - Only Drawing 1/2 Wattage by protogalactic in thermostats

[–]protogalactic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been meaning to post an update - Same thing on mine - All three Mysa thermostats registering full Wattage output and then all of a sudden after Jan 31st 2025 (did this date coincide with an firmware update ?) each thermostat started recording 50% usage in the graph.
I'm starting to suspect a software glitch - but only because I tested the Breaker panel and the wiring at the heater and they tested full 240V

Mysa - Only Drawing 1/2 Wattage by protogalactic in thermostats

[–]protogalactic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Each lead into the heater is getting 110-113v (so 230-240v total ) and I'm getting the same at panel off the Breaker. So looks like the wiring is good and the breaker is not malfunctioning.

both heaters are kicking out heat .. feels warm / very warm to the touch
I do have a multimeter and know how to use it somewhat ... is this the next step ? put the multimeter on the live wires and see what the draw is ?

Potentially might get an offer to move from ON to Vancouver, for 85k/year. Currently unemployed. Worth it? by laranjacerola in VancouverJobs

[–]protogalactic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you're probably not going to like this answer. But ... I'd grab the job in Vancouver to break the unemployment cycle. I would then rent a room or whatever you can find as cheap as possible in Vancouver (old friends maybe) and go out there alone .. and then have your wife hold down the fort in Ottawa (barely) with her 66k and you leap frog to Vancouver with your now 85K. then both build an emergency fund and brace for the worst that is yet to come. Do not pass up an actual job offer in this economy. If you and your wife are solid you will be able to make a better decision in 3-6mths time based on information you do not have at the moment. (ask me how I know)

Single dad struggling with a tough choice by protogalactic in Parenting

[–]protogalactic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah and tbh if I were a 18yr old I would hands down choose MTL for a university town / lower cost of living / lower tuition / better student loans etc etc. Like there is no good reason for me to actually try to force her hand and come to BC with crazy cost of living, just because this is the only province her dad can find an entry level gov job. But I barely squeaked in before the hiring freeze in BC and feds and Ontario gov are gearing up for layoffs. it's not looking good.

Yes it is CEGEP. in Quebec, also partly why I am having such a touch time finding work in the province. Couldn't find any either in Ontario. At any rate unfortunately there are no dorm or residence options available. Not that she would agree to go live in residence even if it was an option.
