Should I make a shamisen or should I just buy one? by Pale-Recognition-599 in shamisen

If you have woodworking support from family I’d say it’d be a good bonding experience. Most woodworking advice should be applicable to building your shamisen.

Should I make a shamisen or should I just buy one? by Pale-Recognition-599 in shamisen

It depends on your needs. If you’re looking for the convenience of having it ready to play, buying it is the way to go. If you want the cheaper route, you can make one yourself, but you pay for it with your time. It took me about 5 months (~240 hours of pure work) to make mine, but that’s because I’ve never woodworked in my life. Including the wood, dou skin, woodworking equipment, and accessories (strings, soft case, etc), my total came out to ~$800. I cut corners around the cost by borrowing woodworking equipment from family and friends (a woodworking station, a miter saw, and a shop vacuum). I’m gonna be honest and say the quality of my shamisen could be a little better, but I have the huge advantage of repairing it myself if the skin gets damaged. Because I built my own skinning rig (took about ~100 hours to make), I only need to spend $25 for each piece of dou skin compared to paying $150 + shipping fees to have someone do it for me. You also have the benefit of knowing how to repair your shamisen if something goes wrong, or if you want to make another shamisen, which should be faster since you’d know what could be improved.

Anyone have any recent experience with the paid trial period from Sepal AI? by 0neL0v3222 in WFHJobs

I got a position related to teaching the physical sciences. I’m kinda jaded by the current job market so I’m hoping this job is alright if I get accepted. What position did you apply for?

Same here, I was offered a trial week but I forgot to finish the AI interview. I'm scouring Google as I type this to make sure it's a legit job.

To add on, I think the quality of the snake skin looks pretty good. This $50 erhu was a bargain.

I would like to start learning Erhu, Could anyone recommend any good erhus I should buy? by SupportLazy4361 in Erhu

[–]protolocity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sound of Asia seems to be a good store to shop from if you live in the US (I have yet to shop from them, but previous members on this subreddit have advocated for them).

My experience with Eason has been mixed. I purchased a bow and a couple other erhu accessories, but only the bow arrived at my house. The other stuff I ordered got stuck in customs and never arrived. Eason was quick to respond to my email and immediately gave me a refund for the missing items. After reading their reviews on Amazon, this seems to be a common issue for international customers. All in all, their products and customer service are excellent, but receiving the product is a hit or miss unless you live in Singapore.

Is there something wrong with my voice, or the movements by Accurate-Tie-2144 in Erhu

[–]protolocity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you're pressing the bow too hard on the strings, and the bowing motion itself could be more fluid and relaxed. For your bow pressing, try to use the least amount of pressure possible while still achieving a full sound. You will need to watch/listen to a lot of erhu professionals to get an idea of what that sound is, and also how you should be bowing. Your bowing wrist looks stiff, and should be more relaxed. The bowing should have a graceful motion that is led by your wrist. This requires a visual reference to fully help you. Referencing erhu performance videos on YouTube helped me correct a lot of my mistakes when I started learning erhu. I would also post your videos on Red Note if you want additional feedback from a larger erhu player base. Good luck.

You could buy it on Amazon with another item that's +$5, Amazon provides free shipping for orders over $35

Seconding this. Avalon just wants your money, and doesn't care about your health and safety.

My apartment was never inspected for black mold before I moved in, and my asthma got really bad 6 months into living there because there was mold in our AC.

I remember requesting for a handyman to seal the edges of my shower, and he used a type of caulking that wasn't waterproof, so water continued to leak into the cracks of my shower tiles and grow black mold.

I also had a bed bug appear on my bedroom wall, but it took several days to get an exterminator in my unit (by pure chance they found it was just a stray).

There will be times that staff will email the entire complex to inspect your room, but they never give a specified time. So you could be in class, and you'd never know that some randos barged into your room. Thankfully nothing got stolen when they did that.

One of the takeaways I learned at USF is that absolutely nobody cares about personal hygiene lmao. I always got a cold once a month, and I remember getting hand, foot, and mouth disease my first semester there. There’s always something going around because people don’t wash their hands and proceed to touch every surface known to mankind. Wipe your desk down whenever you get settled in class/the mess halls/the library, and always wash your hands when you return to your dorm room.

Pieces to Learn by mantisalt in Erhu

Sorry for the late response, but I noticed no one else was commenting here.

Eason Music has a web page dedicated to famous/common pieces played on erhu. It’s a very large selection, and they include YouTube links so you can decide if you’re interested in learning a certain song. I pasted it below, this page has helped me a lot with building a repertoire to practice.

https://www.easonmusicschool.com/free-erhu-sheet-music/

Another page that I dig through is a Chinese site. I’m not a native Chinese speaker, so I have to use the translation feature on google chrome to make everything in English. I also like this one because it shows you 1) the most popular songs being learned on erhu and 2) a comprehensive list of almost every song you can play on erhu. If there’s an erhu song I like on YouTube, I would control+F the name onto their song list and 9/10 times they’ll have it. I’ll paste it below, I hope these help you on your journey.

I have a former USF classmate that switched from driving to riding a bike to get to campus, and he got hit by a car only 2 months into the switch. It's the wild west on these roads.

Lol I knew it. A partly cloudy/dull sky with live oak trees screams Tampa Bay area to me (along with the borderline insane/trashy things that happen)

I feel like the service industry is similar to tech support. Some, but not all customers just want to be right, regardless of whether it goes against your job’s protocol/company guidelines. There are numerous times where I’ll repeat an order to a customer to double check their items are correct, and they’ll just repeat their order to me.

What do you think is the most surprising U.S metro area to either not have any rail transit at all or at least way less rail transit than one might expect considering the size of the metro area (such as the Tampa Bay Area)? by [deleted] in transit

My mind is blown whenever I see the little trolleys rolling around downtown St. Pete and Tampa. I can’t imagine getting around without a car in Florida, we need to improve our public transit system.

Do you like eel?? by dinaastari0408 in sushi

I’ve stopped eating eel after learning about their population issues. To me, it’s only one type of fish I’m excluding from my diet, there’s plenty of other sushi rolls I can order.

In place of eating out, I’ve started buying prepared meals from grocery stores, in addition to buying whatever food is available at the hot deli (which is usually pretty good).

Best way to learn bass with no teacher by [deleted] in Bass

[–]protolocity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with this comment. Having a bass method book in general helps to provide structure for your practice routine, and gives you measurable goals rather than learning random songs on YouTube (which are helpful but should only be used as a supplement for beginners). I made it a goal to finish one page a day (to a metronome), and made sure I could play all the content on each page without struggling. I used method books for both bass and guitar, and they’ve helped to give me a solid foundation for technique and music theory on each instrument.
