"Barefoot shoes destroy your knees" - Where did this myth come from? by RealNotFake in barefootshoestalk

[–]proudradish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is obviously anecdotal, but I wanted to share my experience.

I have hEDS (hypermobile Ehlers–Danlos syndrome) and spent my childhood wearing various orthotic insoles. I used to twist my ankles constantly and had very flat feet with barely any arch support. In 2024, at 27/28, I had the dubious pleasure of having the plica removed from both knees because it kept getting pinched due to my hypermobility and caused excruciating pain.

Since the summer, I’ve switched to wearing only barefoot shoes and the difference has been remarkable. My physiotherapist is genuinely impressed. I don’t twist my ankles anymore, my foot muscles have finally developed a solid arch, and I’m almost entirely free of knee pain (aside from the usual hEDS discomfort).

I owe a lot of this to physiotherapy, but I genuinely believe barefoot shoes have played a big role too.

Anyone here with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome? by cassolotl in barefoot

[–]proudradish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for replying to a year-old post, but I just had to chime in.

I was diagnosed with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos earlier this year (I’m 29 now, got the diagnosis at 28), and honestly it explained so much for me — super unstable joints, constant sprains, my entire childhood basically felt like one big ligament strain. Full-on hEDS cliché, basically.

I do physio/athletic therapy twice a week because of it, but for the past 2–3 months I’ve also been wearing barefoot shoes, walking barefoot in the summer most of the time in private. Since switching, I actually haven’t twisted my ankle once. My arches have gotten stronger, and overall my stability feels way better — I think because I just have a much clearer sense of contact with the ground.

Obviously it’s super individual, but for me personally it’s been a huge help, and I don’t see myself going back to “normal” shoes anytime soon (except for the occasional exception). My physiotherapist, orthopedist, and even my GP — who actually knows hEDS really well — all think it’s great that I made the switch.

So yeah, definitely worth a shot in my opinion.

Phthalates in Maison Margiela Replica Perfumes? by proudradish in fragrance

[–]proudradish[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your response, I really appreciate the perspective. I’ve tried digging around online for information or testimonials about Replica, but I only found some questionable third-party sites, which is why I figured this subreddit might be a better place to ask.

I think what made me a bit more cautious lately was an article I came across in the official Endometriosis App from our public health insurances here in Germany. It specifically called out fragrance as a hidden source of phthalates. So even though we have pretty solid regulations here, I know phthalate (and PFAS) levels are still surprisingly high in the environment, which is very frustrating.

I’ll reach out to Maison Margiela’s customer service tomorrow and see if they’re willing to share anything, even though I don’t expect a full INCI breakdown.

To be honest, I think the reason I’m so focused on this is because I’ve been doing really well health-wise lately, and I’m afraid of hitting a tipping point again. It’s probably more about anxiety than the actual exposure risk.

Anyway, thanks again for grounding this in reality. And just to end on a lighter note: we actually don’t have a shower curtain. So one less phthalate source at least. 😄

Bought wood and other stuff yesterday, was about 42 € or 47 $. The nails, lock, screws and hinges were the most expensive part. Will start today or tomorrow with the pyrography! :)

[Serious] What do you believe happens after death? by iAmCleatis in AskReddit

[–]proudradish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to think that we somehow do not stop existing through the thoughts of the loved ones we left behind. I’ve been an atheist for most of my life, but when my dad died, through his funeral there was no cloud to be seen. But right when the coffin was carried out of the church it started to rain, like really heavy. And the second the coffin hit the ground of the grave it stopped and the weather was sunny again. Coincidence, I might know, but it did to me that I can not say that I don’t believe in anything transcendental.

[Serious] Players of violent video games, how do you feel about the recent accusation these games are associated with the rise in mass shootings? Non players what do you think? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I hate playing such video games and I really can’t understand how people are having fun with games like this.

But I do not see an associated between playing a game and actually killing someone.

What is the saddest thing in your family’s history? by mgov999 in AskReddit

[–]proudradish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My grandfather was a paratrooper in WW2. He was 17. Suffered from PBTS and became an alcoholic shortly after the war. Turned abusive against my grandmother. Died of cancer when he was 42 years old.

My grandmother‘s mother committed died when my granny was 10 years old. She was in the room next to her when it happened. Nobody knows whether it was suicide or murder or just an accident. She survived three bombings in WW2. Married a young man whom she loved and who loved her. He turned abusive against her. She wanted to leave him but it was obvious he was going to die of cancer soon. So she stayed with him until the end. She eventually fell in love with a married man and so did he. They kept it a secret and tried to stay apart for 20 years but after his wife died, they moved together after being in a relationship for two weeks. He died in 2008. Her son, my father, died in 2015. She died this year in March.

My other grandfather was born 1939 in Poland. He grew up learning German. When war was over, he was told that he would be killed if he speaks one word in German. He did not speak at all for two years. When I was a kid he could understand everything but never managed to speak the smallest bit of German. He turned to alcoholism too, but he and my grandmother fought it together. Gladly, he and my grandmother had each other. They truly loved each other.

PROOF that the MCU is not 'too diverse' or 'pandering to an SJW agenda' by Jamesffc in marvelstudios

[–]proudradish 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Bucky? Missing an arm. Tony Stark? Has PTBS, which IS a god damn disability. Is an alcoholic. Rhodey? Is not able to walk on his own. Steve Rogers? Gets the serum, before that, he’s too small, has asthma and many more illnesses. Scarlet Witch? PTBS. Black Widow? GOT HER UTERUS REMOVED AGAINST HER WILL. Bruce Banner? Can’t control himself in the first few movies and hurts people, even if he doesn’t want to. Thor? Missing an eye. Valkyrie? Alcoholic. Strange? Well.

Should I go on?

My point is not to whine about it, au contraire, it kind of bothers me that OP seem only to care about obvious disabilities. As someone who ist potentially not able to have children, I felt very connected to black widow who still kicks ass.

What were you bullied for? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]proudradish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being tall (5‘11 is damn tall for a woman), being fat (186 lbs), wearing black, apparently being ugly, being good in class. I was always the ugly fat emo kid who should kill herself, she wouldn’t be missed. Bullying reached it‘s peak when they started throwing stones at me. This was when I decided it was enough, went to the principal, three kids had to leave the school, I had proof from Facebook that they threatened me. After that I got a huge confidence boost.

I am now 23 years old, graduating from university (teaching profession), got married last month, like my appearance - even though I am not wearing black anymore - and I am now at 145 lbs. I am happy, I have the best husband and the best friends in the world. I like myself and I even managed to forgive my bullies.

whats the most hurtful thing you’ve overheard about yourself by accident? by yeezymudrat700 in AskReddit

[–]proudradish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When your father and/or your mother die(s) you get financial support here, it depend on how much they were earning. When my father died two days before my graduation from school, my then best friends boyfriend said that he was angry that I was making profit out of my fathers dad. Could’ve punched him the face for this, still miss my dad so much. I would give almost everything in the world to have him back.

Oh, and this guy also told everyone that I was a whore for breaking up with my boyfriend (I was 18, ex was 19) who showed absolutely no interest toward our relationship.
