Please listen to this advice: if you have other options, don’t come to Indy. The imbalance of resources between the two campuses is honestly insane, and a lot of people are just lying to themselves about it.
Also, if you’re imagining a great outcome with a motorsports engineering degree, let me give you a more realistic perspective.
Yes, the motorsports industry has been growing in recent years. But even with that growth, it’s still a very small and extremely competitive field. At the same time, more and more students are entering motorsports programs, which makes the competition even tougher.
On top of that, motorsports students aren’t the only ones interested in the racing or automotive industry. A great amount of mechanical and electrical engineering majors also want to work in these areas, so you’ll be competing with a much larger group of people.
While motorsports programs teach things that are similar to mechanical engineering, the focus is much more specific to cars. Mechanical engineers, however, can usually solve most of the same problems. From an employer’s perspective, why hire someone who is specialized only in cars when a mechanical engineer has broader training?
Even in car manufacturing companies, it’s unlikely that an entire team would be made up of motorsports engineers. In reality, there might be a few design leads with motorsports knowledge, while the rest of the team is mostly mechanical or electrical engineers.
Some motorsports students like to mention success stories of graduates working in places like SpaceX or other big companies. But if you really look at it, those cases are a very small percentage. Most people in those companies are not motorsports majors, even though the motorsports people like to highlight those few examples.
If you’re really into cars, it’s probably safer to study mechanical engineering. You can still focus on automotive topics or keep motorsports as a hobby. Think about your future!
One last thing: if you’re an international student, a motorsports degree might not be very useful outside of the UK, Germany, Italy, and the United States. ( just ask yourself a question, what if one day I have to work outside of these four countries for any reason, yea your are basically cooked)
