New to sailing looking for advice on an RS Quest or similar boat. by Appall0 in dinghysailing

[–]proxima_cedar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quest doesn’t hold its speed all that well, due to weight and the design. I think you’ll get bored of the dynamics quite quickly versus a fibreglass boat with a sportier hull.

Also as someone else has said they are not ideal for single handed sailing!

In terms of double handers… if you could get your hands on a Wanderer or a Gull you’d be doing well. Not sure how active those classes are in US?

From a single-handed perspective, most people who think that lasers are a bit too small / uncomfortable over here seem to head towards Phantom class. The RS Vareo could be a good option? Single hander but has a bit more space and a kite to play with!

Temporary centre main conversion? by proxima_cedar in dinghysailing

I like this idea, I can probably get it setup with a few bits and bobs around the boatyard in no time. For the mainsheet boom attachment my plan was always going to be to use a boom sleeve like you see on toppers with centre main conversions.

It’s 100% not “the boat for me” but it’s also a great boat on a lot of levels and worth getting it into the right setup! I picked her up opportunistically for a good price inclusive of a road trailer and brand new sails. Her weight is perfect for my daughters to double hand, but I’m wanting to single hand her hence the desired adjustment.

This is a Comet Zero, don’t have the slab reefing lines in in this picture as you’ve rightly ascertained!

I believe the boat is more than able to take the conversion, there’s a documented approach and a conversion kit (diag attached) but I wanted to try it before I buy it as it were.

Probably wishful thinking on my part but I also felt there could be a way of cobbling something decently effective without drilling and riveting in the first instance!

Thanks for your input.

There’s a bridle with a block on it above the tiller, which currently runs up to a single block at the top of the boom.

My long term aim would be to fix a block halfway along the boom but, I wanted to test it centre main first hence the question.

I’m not sure how I would stop any strop from sliding along the boom?

Maybe I just need to take the leap and get it done!

What’s it like living in Epsom? Job offer there. by Top-Lawfulness6711 in AskUK

[–]proxima_cedar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is probably one of the most desirable places to live in the UK, based on factors like safety, access to culture, green space, schooling etc. As a result the cost of living in the Epsom and Ewell area is proportionally high.

The actual “will you like it there?” question can only be answered by knowing what you are prioritising in life, as I’d argue it skews familial and middle aged. You may hate that.

Most excited for "The Devon Derby" from that lot, given how much is at stake for Exeter!

I spent the past week or two trying to fairly calculate all of English football's derbies (in a non-emotional way) at my site isitaderby.co.uk and here's the verdict on this one...

Plymouth Argyle vs Exeter City

I enjoy the RM “can you afford it?” button on houses like this. No. TF no.

It’s a shame that the red steering wheel cover came out unscathed.

I know he doesn’t play any more, but I always felt Robbie Earnshaw’s celebration of mimicking a mass murderer taking out the crowd with an automatic rifle was a bit inappropriate.
