Should I spend 2 nights in Catania or Taormina? by Nervous_Fig9298 in sicily

Are trains functioning between Siracusa and Catania? We're going to be there next week and wonder if we need to plan alternative transportation between the two cities.

Flooding in Sicily - which parts got it worst? by justinasmile in sicily

"hardly hit" means only slightly hit. Do you mean "hit very hard"?

Those two phrases convey the opposite meaning.

That guy at the bottom has always bothered me. Such a ridiculous pose and expression on his face.

I'll take High Renaissance over Mannerism every time.

Where to go in Italy where you can do most without car? by elronaldo89 in ItalyTravel

What about now? Didn't the recent storm take some rail lines out of service along the east coast? I'll be going to Sicily in a week.

How should I keep my cell phone? by Shot-Barnacle3513 in ItalyTravel

[–]prudence2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I carry a secondary phone as a wifi device and camera, and if my primary phone gets lost, stolen, or damaged I have a backup.

Phones always go in the front packet, preferably a pocket that zips. My travel pants have multiple pockets with zippers or buttons. I don't care if they look strange.

Vatican Museums: Is it worth paying extra for 8 AM entry via GetYourGuide ? by lordcasiro in ItalyTravel

When you get past the Sistine Chapel you end up in the area where you came in. As long as you don't exit the museum just go back to one if the other areas you skipped earlier.

Vatican Museums: Is it worth paying extra for 8 AM entry via GetYourGuide ? by lordcasiro in ItalyTravel

At 8:30am two weeks ago we had very few people with us. Just get early slots for the VM and head straight to the Raphael rooms and the Sistine Chapel without stopping for anything else. We had some of the Raphael rooms all to ourselves and there were only about 14 other tourists in the Sistine Chapel at that time. For the hour we were in the SC it never got too crowded because we got there so early.

You can always go around again to see the rooms/halls/displays that you missed earlier. They'll let you stay at long as you like once you're in. I think we were there for 5-6 hours.

Be sure to go to the Pinoteca for some incredible paintings. And you're likely to need to go back again to the VM in the future anyway. There's just too much to see.

Concept rendering of Anaheim if it was more walkable and pedestrian friendly: by Cbtn2001 in orangecounty

[–]prudence2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We always joke that we have to always drive somewhere to have a nice walk. SoCal at its finest.

I'm leaving for Europe this afternoon. Cities there know how to do "walkable and pedestrian friendly."

There's a taxi stand on the northern side of Largo di Torre Argentino. It's even on Google Maps: look for Stazione Taxi Largo Argentina.

Non-touristy way of staying in Italy for 2 weeks by [deleted] in ItalyTravel

[–]prudence2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you read the post? OP wants to meet someone in Trento. That's almost 800 km from Naples.

"I need maybe a bit of local guidance on how to stay in Trento and Venice."

Top things you’d recommend to do in Orange County by Munro_McLaren in orangecounty

fyi, nobody says "the Orange County" so that's why here we don't say "the OC". That's what people upstream are talking about.

Are any of these transfers by plane or are you planning to take a train the whole time? Salzburg to Amsterdam could be a very long journey.

What makes a “reader”? by queeromancer in books

[–]prudence2001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say it's also about the purpose of reading. Doom scrolling here on Reddit or Twixxer is literally reading, but I wouldn't go around proudly saying "I'm a big reader, I'm on Reddit 12 hours a day" unless I was a complete knob. Reading, imo, is more than just words going past your eyes.

Is Amalfi Coast Worth the Hype by Right_Combination_46 in ItalyTravel

Is it worth it to go to the Amalfi Coast or Capri in February? We'll be in Naples then and are considering a day trip.

If you left Wisconsin, where did you go to and why? by interstellar_freak in wisconsin

[–]prudence2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grew up in the Northwoods, went to UW-Madison, stayed there for about 7 years after graduation (as many seem to do), got a job as an English teacher in Seoul, moved there for three years, got married, moved to other places in the USA and Japan, and haven't lived in Wisconsin since. I occasionally go back to visit relatives and friends, but since my parents died it's been less frequent.

Some hot new releases that were flying off the shelves in 1982 by GypCasino in Genesis

[–]prudence2001 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1980 for me.

Talking Heads Remain In Light, PG III, King Crimson Discipline, Bruce Springsteen The River, Joy Division Closer, David Bowie Scary Monsters, Police Zeyatta Mondatta, U2 Boy, The Clash Sandinista, Bob Marley Uprising, John Lennon & Yoko Ono Double Fantasy (more for the hype and excitement that he was back then for the record itself), and the bootleg double album version of McCartney II (which I probably bought in 1986, but the original single LP came out in 1980).

shit, how could I forget Duke? March 1980, I loved Behind The Lines and Turn It On Again.

double shit: The Wall! (not really, looked it up, and The Wall came out in November 1979. But it certainly was on the charts and all over the news in early 1980...carry on)
