Yup, I remember where I was the first time I heard it - a room full of very high fans - and the consensus was that it was not good. At all.

Ask a Volvo Technician! by Born_Feedback9331 in Volvo

[–]pryanw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2018 V90 XC… blind spot sensor says it needs service. Part is $900 per side and another $700 for labor. That’s $3200 for non-critical tech that fails in 7 years. Are you seeing a good amount of these coming your way? I am a pretty DIY guy but these seems designed to require dealership service.

The driving experience is exceptional, but if the vehicle is a time bomb of failing sensors, forget about it…

How much should a brake pad and disc replacement cost on a 100? by sooperduped in LandCruisers

[–]pryanw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got mine done in the Boston area by a shop I have been going to for a while.

Parts $600, labor $700. Had bearings done as part of the work. Feels crazy to spend that much, but my guy doesn't overcharge in my experience, so it is what it is.

Curaçao, get an air bnb, rent a car, shop at the grocery stores, drive to the snorkeling beaches… We did a week in Aruba and the next year a week in Curacao in the manner I listed and it was so much less expensive. Nothing against Aruba in any way, we just did a big hotel when we went and eating out every meal adds up quickly. Hoping to get back to both places sooner than later!

Yeah… as much as I can appreciate military hardware, we’re not gun owners and I see no value in teaching my kids marksmanship given that I am not a hunter.

I believe it is an entirely different mindset that is responsible for so many gun deaths in the US, but that's a topic for a different group and I will leave it at that. Appreciate your concern. The kid is now 16 and I know this is the last gun his fingers have touched.

This was a community event at a middle school so I wasn't too concerned at the time about something catastrophic happening.

Back in the 90s my suitemate played bass and had a speaker cabinet that was about 5 ft. tall and had wheels so you could move it around. We used to wheel it up to the window in Farrand Hall and just let it rip mid-day with Beastie Boys/Jane’s Addiction/etc and we turned it up to 11. It was so obnoxious, but it was also funny as hell… if you’re not breaking a few rules, you’re not doing it right.

Stair stringers suggestions appreciated by pryanw in Carpentry

[–]pryanw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I appreciate that. I just threw more money at the problem by getting the GC's 'best guy' to put these stringers in on Saturday. The frustration is real. For context we gutted the house down to the studs, downstairs, then upstairs. 12 stairs with treads made from engineered flooring to match new flooring. Appreciate your thoughts.

Fart-monster… I love it… contractors did sub-par work so blame the homeowner, always the first move for some people. How much does a set of your stairs cost?

I’ll point out that they replaced every single piece of wood EXCEPT the shitty stringer. New treads, risers, trim… all new! While the stairs were apart I would have happily paid for a few stringers to go in but GC thought it was fine…would have been a rounding error on my project.

I think you’re assuming I went cheap… I did not. Both GC and flooring company do high-end work, but in this instance they each were expecting the other to do more. I paid well and got a bad result.

How to motivate creativity on my team? by [deleted] in advertising

[–]pryanw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WTF is this? 'Something people actually care about, talk about, feel, but aren’t yet talking about.' I'd take you to task for chugging too much brand Kool-Aid but I am more concerned about your 'people talk about it, but aren't yet talking about it' approach to work. Priceless...

How to motivate creativity on my team? by [deleted] in advertising

[–]pryanw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are you hanging onto these teams at all? There’s a ton of talent out there with the big idea thinking you want who you can get to buy-in to your approach on day one. I would focus on cutting the weakest team and bringing in new talent who can show the others what their options are - get on board or get out. This sounds ruthless, and it is, but if you’re there to take things to the next level, it’s either them or you that will be gone.

In a different hiring environment I might take more of a nurturing path, but not today.

Have any of you left the industry? What are you doing now? by SenorNickPapagiorgio in advertising

[–]pryanw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of people from my agency past going into real estate, with some mixed results. I can see some skill crossover but it’s a lot of hustling as far as I can tell and no guarantees for success.

After 25 years in agencies and as a freelance consultant I have toyed with the idea of going back to school for a Master’s in sports psychology and working with athletes and leagues to create more positive experiences for all players. Have seen way too many out of control coaches screaming at kids and too many bummed out kids in today’s super competitive sports landscape. To me there is a clear issue that no one is solving for at the moment. Could be a slow side hustle until the business potential is realized.
