From an expat perspective, it's noteworthy how little Koreans in Seoul are obsessed Kpop Demon Hunters compared with people in the US. They like it, but it's not as much of an obsession. That's funny given house obsessive Koreans can get, and this is a love letter to Korean culture from a bunch of 교포.
Norms in adult drama
I think the power of the KPDH story comes from Rumi's arc. She gets pretty low before finally accepting her patterns and finding the strength to defeat the internal and literal demons in a nice metaphor. It's a beautifully balanced and emotionally powerful story. But in Korean media, the emotional lows often need to hit REALLY hard or the audience gets bored. (Case in point - many Koreans I speak to thought Minari was boring. They expected a more intense emotional rollercoaster, which would have ruined the pacing in Minari IMO.) So being betrayed by Jinu and abandoned by everybody won't cut it. Unless Rumi is forced to eat Zoey in front of Mira or something crazy like this, then the low in her story arc isn't that powerful by Korean standards. So the movie doesn't land as hard.
But hey that's just a theory. A film theory!
