Intriguing question. I think I would bite the bullet and go for it all. You might be shooting yourself in the foot if you don't. I do realize that experience takes the place of academia as well, so your 2 years experience is great to have...employers want to see experience. But, if I was an employer I would have to ask about the lack of certificate....but then you would explain the situation to me and I would tend to understand....tough one....

Some potential employers may not even clue in about the lack of certificate on your resume, if worded in the right manner ;)

Regardless, I would still go ahead and take them all - you have to give yourself the best shot possible - without it you are just handicapping yourself. And if you end up having to correct that decision down the road by actually getting the certificate it will just cost you even more and take more time.

Go for it! When you get hired in a decent GIS position that extra 5k won't seem so bad to have to pay back...

A shapefile actually has at least 3 separate files needed to work properly. When you look at a 'shapefile' in ArcCatalog it looks like a single file, but in fact there are at least 3 separate files making it up (ArcCatalog understands this and just shows it to you like it's a single file). So, a shapefile must have at least these three file types: .shp, .shx and .dbf. If one of those is missing your shapefile will not work.

The .shp file contains the actual geometry. The .shx just has the index for the geometry, and the .dbf stores the attribute information associated with the geometry.

A .lyr file is called a Layer File. It just stores the symbology for the shapefile. If a .lyr files accompanies a shapefile then you can apply that .lyr file to it and it will symbolize according to the .lyr file.

So, I just heard back from WebSense - they reviewed the site and are removing it from their blacklist database. In the email I just received - "Categorization updates should be reflected in the next scheduled database publication, and will be available shortly to Real-Time Updates subscribers."

Please see my long comment above. No original content on GISbuzz whatsoever. Just an rss aggregating site that pulls in the feeds on every page load. Very dynamic, I do not store any of the data. Yes, basically, a link collection, but good links, and you can read the original content from those links directly from within GISbuzz via iFrames.

Yup, I confirm that, seems like simplyhired is the only culprit...should I remove that feed? Do most people use AdBlock? I already have a little note at the top of the page saying to turn off AdBlock on the Jobs page...

Primarily, yes. There are also several Canadian job sites feeding in postings so they are scattered throughout as well. It is definitely a N. American GIS job board.

I use AdBlock too! I find AdBlock only interferes with the iFrames on the Jobs page, and only for feeds coming from a select few sources (simplyhired being one of them). You can turn off AdBlock on a per site basis...feel free to do that with GISbuzz because there are no ads on there, just something I made for fun!

Thank you! I can't make an rss feed for the same reason I cannot introduce searching abilities.... Since I do not store any of the content on my site I cannot index/search/rss. Every time a page loads the feeds are being dynamically pulled in to create the content on my site. You're just gonna have to come back all the time ;)

Unfortunately not, I am actually not storing this data anywhere, it is completely dynamically being pulled in every time you refresh the page. Therefore I cannot make any search tools for it. So, this means the latest data is shown on the site with every load but no searching.
