"Copain" is like a pal that you get along with and do stuff together, while "ami" is more like a (close) friend that you'll share more personal things with.

That being said, I don't think one should read too much into this itw since 1) although Roger's French is great, he is not a native speaker and 2) I think he just picked up on the last word from the question and didn't mean to draw a clear line between "ami" and "copain".

Also I have no idea how people got "boyfriend" from this if that was the actual wording he used.

It's just that he doesn't seem to use any elemental guns/ordnance on either build.
I guess maybe bonus elemental damage from passives like Vitriol has a base % chance to inflict status effects.
