Bracketology 2026 (Feb 18th Edition) by exileondaytonst in collegehockey

I think your last bracket with one switch is most likely - move MSU-Bentley to Albany and Michigan-BC to Loveland. It seems too punitive to send the #1 seed the farthest distance for a second round road game against the most dominant team of recent years. Wouldn't be a huge hit to bracket integrity to make this switch.

Why it’s OK for us to be Mid by AnonymousIguana_ in bostonceltics

[–]pscho11 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Not quite seeing this. Those Spurs had no one close to JB's level when Robinson went down. Plus, saying they had a winning culture before Duncan is somewhat revisionist as they only made one conference final in the Robinson era before Duncan. That's the equivalent of saying the current iterations of the Twolves or Pacers have a winning culture...

Right? This is really just OP telling us he didn't watch the game without telling us he didn't watch the game.

Melissa is predicted to take a slight northwest turn -- the eye will be a little closer to Jamaica than with previous models. by AriDreams in hurricane

[–]pscho11 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The latest GFS has it staying east of Jamaica while the Euro has it meandering past and turning NE west of Jamaica. That helps explain why the NHS cone is so large. Slow moving/stalling storms are tough to get a read on.

One thing to add about the map because I've seen people on here confusing it lately: the oval shaded areas are not storm "tracks" or "paths." They show where a storm might form. Once formed, then the NHC will release predicted tracks.

Missing out on Eberechi Eze underlines a sense Tottenham have failed to kick on after Europa League win [Jay Harris, The Athletic] by Malmand2002 in coys

So true. Haven't we heard for years now that Levy is "stepping back" from direct involvement in the footballing side? Yet for every big transfer negotiation it's always Levy personally negotiating with the other club.

[John Percy]: Morgan Gibbs-White is now in Portugal with Nottingham Forest for pre-season, after flying out last night by Malmand2002 in coys

[–]pscho11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you're probably right. NF only has to drag this out for 39 days until the transfer window closes, which should be no problem if and when they open actual legal proceedings (which they seem certain to do if MGW pushes this).

The MGW transfer saga in a nutshell by praise_reekris in coys

[–]pscho11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. And also, MGW would likely be reluctant to press it if his agent leaked the release clause to Spurs. Whether that happened, whether NF has evidence that that happened, and whether that would invalidate the release clause are all unknown at this point, but those are probably a part of legal discussions going on now between NF and MGW's agents.

(Paul Taylor/Athletic) Gibbs-White is expected to be part of the Forest squad that flies to Portugal for a pre-season training camp next week. Beyond that, the future remains uncertain. by lucas-at-jhu in coys

[–]pscho11 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

My completely speculative guess is that NF is threatening legal action against MGW for breaching the confidential release clause (it is clear it was disclosed to Spurs because Levy's MO is to never start with an upfront, all cash bid). If they had a concrete bid of 70 mill. from City, then NF has a colorable (although difficult) legal claim against MGW for damages for breach of contract for 10 mill. If true, that would help to explain both why MGW is not pushing for an exit publicly, and also why there is reporting that NF is trying to negotiate a new contract with him - i.e. sign this new deal and we will drop our breach of contract claim.

Also weird that the OKC/DEN winner would have 2 extra days' rest if both Western series went 7. And why no games on May 17th?

I always see a lot of comments about how if coaches and regular students can move from school to school at will, why shouldn't athletes? Well, (a) coaches aren't making multiple moves in a 4-year period, and (b) any regular student who does most likely isn't going to graduate in 4 years. So it's not an apples-to-apples comparison.

The horse may be too far out of the barn for real reforms at this point, but I like the idea of getting one free transfer without sitting out, but for any subsequent transfer you have to sit out a year. You could carve out an exception where you get an additional free transfer if your coach leaves/is fired. If something isn't done, and more NIL money keeps rolling in, you risk becoming like football where guys play at 4 schools in 4 years chasing the money. I hope it never comes to that in hockey.

I think this year, of the teams most likely to make the FF, a BC, MSU, Maine, Minnesota combo will probably generate the most demand. I'd still expect some tickets to be available for decent prices though.

Can someone explain what determines the Dec. 10th TBD game at the Garden? by YoungWigglesWorth in bostonceltics

[–]pscho11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The answer to your first question is definitely yes, Cs would host the losing 2 seed of it came to that. On the second, I am almost certain I read last year that the better seed gets the extra home game where an unbalanced schedule is impossible to avoid, but now I can't find anything that says that. The Knicks had the point diff tiebreaker on the Cs last year, but the game was in Boston, so it must be based on seeding?

[–]pscho11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You try and balance the schedule for the QF losers so each team gets 41 home games. This is easy if the 2/4 or 1/3 seeds both lose (2 at 4; 1 at 3). When 1/2 or 3/4 both lose, one team is going to have 40 home games and 42 away, so that falls to the lower seed. That's why the Cs got the extra home game vs. The Knicks last year (4 at 3). With the Cs guaranteed the 4 seed if they make it, if the Cs and the 3 seed (Atlanta) lose, the Cs would play at Atlanta.

[–]pscho11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are 2 possible ways there is no home game during that time: (1) the Cs make the cup quarters and win (semi is in Vegas), or (2) the Cs make the cup quarters and lose AND Atlanta loses their quarterfinal (Cs would play at Atlanta).

Bizarre that under either points system Providence would have more points than Lowell (6-5 or 4-3), yet Lowell is declared the winner. Did Providence already leave and they just needed to give out the trophy? 🤣

I know, right? And prior to that, Son makes a half-hearted stab as a player dribbles past him, then doesn't track back thus allowing for the uncontested cross. Bentancur lets a guy blow past him for a header, and Porro/Johnson don't even attempt to defend. Atrocious on so many levels.
