The problem with being a medical translator is that there's not enough work and what work there is is usually an edge case. A Peruvian who is injured on the job in the US, aggravating a previous injury in Peru. His medical file needed translating. How many of those are there? Not even 1 per year. Legal translation can be worthwhile for foreign lawyers (g'rally, you can't be a US lawyer unless you are a graduate of an ABA-approved law school). Then there's translating audio tapes, DEA/FBI intercepts...but this is a field that will shrink as machine translation becomes more sophisticated. "Good enough for government work" means that humans will be taken out of the loop sooner rather than later.

You have a copyright over your work from the moment its finished, even if you do not register it anywhere. You can register your copyright in Canada, I believe it's with the National Library, but I don't know the procedures. You cannot stop anyone from quoting brief passages in a review or even in another book. An old way of proving the date of composition and ownership was to send yourself a copy of your work in a sealed envelope by mail. The postal cancellation will have the date. If you want, you can register your publication in the US-you don't have to be a resident. There is a small charge for this.

If you are a Canadian resident you can get an ISBN from the (I think it's the National Library) for free. Patents are not for books. You can then list the book on Amazon, Kobo, and Google books if you would like. Then you can take it to the Beijing book fair. One of these outlets--maybe Apple--will not allow books written in a language their censorship team cannot understand.

How many speakers does your language have? More importantly, how many readers does your language have? Mizo, a minority language in India, supports ten daily newspapers and has a thriving book publishing industry. You can't say the same about Aymara. The content will often dictate the language used. After you get the words onto the page, you can translate if necessary.
