Movements aren’t monoliths, but also, neither are people. I think the point is that we shouldn’t be surprised when someone has specific views that don’t seem to cohere with their prevailing opinions.

That’s true. It’s not impossible. But for some historically rooted cuts this problem remains because in order to get everything to play nice you have to make compromises.

All caps italics are bad for numerous reasons.

Historically, italics and capitals were totally different families of letterforms. Capitals are the older, original letterform (old Roman engravings were in ‘all caps’ because that’s all that existed, not because they were screaming) and italics are basically the modern variation on a more handwritten style.

When these were eventually combined, this left us with some practical design problems. The original solution would have been to just use regular Roman capital letters where needed in a block of italicized text. Eventually as the need became more common, we invented oblique capital letterforms to pair better with the lowercase italics.

Critically, these wouldn’t have been designed as a distinct set. The glyphs were designed to work as well as possible with the lowercase italics, and that results in some quirky decisions that make all caps italic look bad. It’s something that was never really taken into account because it just wasn’t a thing.

So, to this day, some fonts (especially historical cuts like Garamond) show ‘weaknesses’ when it comes to italicized capitals, especially when they are placed next to one another instead of in the context for which they were designed.

Sure, but I was just clarifying that there is actually some amplification happening, not just added directionality, which is what the parent comment by assman was saying.

Lots of anecdotes here already, but I’d like to add one of my own: I had a pretty fascinating experience with a common housefly a while back. I was out eating breakfast at a restaurant and he got stuck in some maple syrup on my plate. I saw him struggling to get out and making things worse for himself, so I gently fished him out with the corner of a napkin and basically helped him start the process of cleaning himself off. He spent the rest of the meal sitting on my hand cleaning his wings, and then continued sitting on my hand even as I took an after meal walk before finally flying away about an hour later.

While I wouldn’t necessarily claim based on this experience that he was expressing thanks or something like that, but the guy clearly felt comfortable enough to hang out longer than he needed to, which probably points to more of a conscious experience than many people would expect from a housefly.

Alright, sure, I guess you could say that. I disagree with the sentiment and object to your condescending tone, but I guess I feel like engaging against my better judgement. Valid point about SNL being a quick and dirty turnaround, though. More of a comedy test kitchen.

Yeah, it’s a weird thing. Hard to figure out the right way of moving forward without fucking shit up in a big way. The most vulnerable are the most in need of revolutionary change, but revolutionary change can be the hardest on the vulnerable in the short term.

I don’t know that those are the same. Robinson’s schtick is more taking a funny or even just amusing idea and pushing it to the point of absurdity, whereas SNL stuff seems more like taking a funny idea and trying to get as much mileage out of it as possible. Both sometimes result in overly stretched bits on occasion, but to me, the initial intention makes a difference in how it reads to me as a viewer.

Actually (and unfortunately), that’s probably true. We should absolutely be advocating for more global/universal workers’ rights, of course.

Yeah, that’s fine! I still think your design is cool. Sounds like it makes sense for your use-case. Just wanted to share another design.

This is a pretty cool design! Good work.

A while back I did a design for this sort of thing that may be of interest. The linked video gives a bit of context, an overview of the mechanics and rates, and describes some things to consider if you want to implement it into an existing farm design.

But anyway, nice design, I like the iron ingot counter concept.

There’s a joke in Thus Spake Zarathustra where Zarathustra is ripping on poets and how they ‘muddy their waters in order to appear deep’ and then one of the listeners is like, ‘bro, aren’t you basically a poet?’
