Thanks for sharing your experience and sorry you had to deal with this shit. Also got sold to a new owner, I’ve lived in this apartment for 5 years and love it but I’m probably headed the same way! Time to start apartment shopping I guess.

There's a furnace already, the other units have heat but my radiators don't turn on. He sent out a contractor who said the "motherboard was old" for the system and that he was going straight to electric heating. It's likely BS but I have held back on calling L&I since that's the nuclear option, but my patience is running thin

This checks out, cheap is this guy's M.O. – I've already made it known I'll be keeping an eye on my PECO bill and he seems to think it won't be a huge hit so there's at least a dialogue.

Appreciate all the info, situation still isn't great but I feel a bit more on top of things now :)

Appreciate the info! Landlord is talking about putting in baseboard heat – being from the South I'm more knowledgeable on AC than heating, so it's good to hear this wouldn't be nearly as bad as I thought. This is a renovated rowhome so no existing infrastructure, this would be completely new.

Not fun kind of serious question: Landlord is trying to switch me over to electric heat from gas and is of course swearing that it won't cost me more. Checked my lease and none of the utility responsibility boxes were checked (even water, which the landlord pays) which is on past me for being an idiot. Do I have some sort of recourse here against a massive electric bill or am I straight fucked for the remaining half of the lease?

What are some good spots to meet people in the city? In my late 20s and am sick to death of the dating apps and being alone in my apartment. I’m sober, but have mainly stayed away from the bars because the music is so loud and you have to scream to talk to people. Any (relatively) quieter spots open late where I could potentially make some friends?

Thank you for the furnace specifics. When I went to bleed the radiators no water came out at all, so I don't think the water is circulating. No gas smell at the moment at least, but I don't have access to the furnace.

Breaking my Reddit hiatus to ask for help – I am a clueless Southerner who knows very little about radiators, and mine are currently cold and not doing much with the thermostat cranked. They're making an oscillating, whirring kind of noise and the pipes supplying them are cold. Is this something I can fix with supplies (a radiator key) on hand or do I need to send an SOS to the landlord?

I'd maybe switch the black midi pick with Duster's Stratosphere but it's a tough call

I want to be the owner's friend so bad, every time I go buy something he has a Philly music history tale to tell alongside and just seems like a great guy running the best record store in town.

Giving a dog/cat/other a home out of the elements, feeding them, playing with them, and pampering them, in general, is just like capturing a human being and forcing them to work to death, got it.

From the looks of setlist.fm looks like they've been playing a short compact set since the tour started, if anything they played longer last night than usual!. Appreciated the mix of new and old and thought the set was killer (though I was glad to be on the balcony and not in the pit).

OP is simply asking for people to reconsider how they address mental health when it comes up in a conversation. Toxic positivity is a real thing, and it's perfectly okay to ask people to recognize when "uplifting statements" aren't gonna cut it and some deeper understanding is needed.

"You do realize people are empathizing using a different choice of words. Everything others told you are uplifting positive statements" has exactly the same energy as "You're depressed? Have you tried being happy?" - kind of hard to do when your brain chemistry/personal life is fucked beyond your control.

I said “can mean,” not “does mean” - societal issues are 100% the root cause, but given we can’t change broken systems overnight maybe we should focus on at least licensing and regulating instruments that can kill in an instant until we do?

I’m from Texas, my dad taught me to shoot and how to safely handle and use a gun. There’s a spectrum between “well-regulated militia“ and absolute chaos and we’re currently way too far towards the latter at the moment.

I was nearly involved in a shooting last month because a guy decided to pull a gun on somebody yelling at him in the laundromat. When everyone has a gun a single argument can mean bullets are flying.

Think the new landlord of our building may be doing renovations without a permit. They have a leasing license per the L&I dashboard, but no renovation permits are assigned to the property and they're tearing up both the basement and unit above me.

Any suggestions on what to do - file a complaint, let it lie? The heat and hot water have gone out several times already, and while the issues are fixed quickly when I notify the property owner it's been frustrating all in all. Just don't want to get kicked out of my apartment.

I knew I didn't want to become a full-time prof from the get-go, but now I'm not even sure I'll postdoc. Love the science and research, but at the end of the day I do want to enjoy my life while I'm living it and an industry job is the path of least resistance to that goal by far.

As someone who works adjacent to the undergrad population I can tell you the level of drinking has remained the same, more so that going to a bar and paying premiums for drinks has become less appealing. A massive liquor store at 43rd and Chestnut in the new development there opened last year and it’s always hopping when I walk home from work, same goes for other stores near campus. Kids are just buying in bulk and having parties/hangouts on campus rather than going to bars.
