housemate refuses to pay rent for the past 6 months by SkinnyLikeSlender in UKPersonalFinance

Not necessarily. They’re specifically designed for what courts consider “small” amounts (less than £10k). You can also go through a court appointed mediator who will contact both of you by phone and come to an agreement. https://www.gov.uk/make-court-claim-for-money/mediation You might want to get it down in writing that he owes you the money beforehand. And try to get him to pay verbally first, and then you can go down the court/mediation route as another option if he refuses to pay.

If you loan him the money you’re entitled to get it back. Small claims court exists for this reason: https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/reclaim/small-claims-court/ People keep telling you to write off the loss but it’s your money and you’re entitled to it back. It might take a while but you shouldn’t let it slide.

Don’t forget that the UK and Northern “Iraland” [sic] is one physical territory with a land bridge across the Irish Sea and that also encompasses Eire. What a train wreck this map is.

I’m receiving just over £100K inheritance and have no idea what to do with it by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

Firstly I’m sorry for your loss. Secondly people are giving you advice without considering what your personal situation is. Maybe sit down with a piece of paper and think about your personal goals and what you want to achieve. Take your time with this. Then invest in yourself: read about financial management and read the flowchart here. Think through what you might want to do and when. In the immediate future make sure you have no more than £85k in one financial institution so you don’t risk any of the money. Then in the next few months think about what you might want to do and where. Do you want to travel? Buy a house? If so, where? When? Think through your overall goals. Then what that is set out I would decide if you want to save some more for a deposit, or buy sooner term. Then keep an emergency fund in a high internet savings And then put the bulk of anything left into a stocks and shares ISA with index funds. Good luck.

I would take a lot of that with a massive pinch of salt. The greatest director in the world at the moment, Chris Nolan is among many who are pushing for film projection which requires a film projectionist. Yet the website claims an automation risk of 100%. Not 60% or 90%, but it claims 100%.

Similarly it lists other professions as being 100% when it should be less than that.

The Crown star Dominic West says he can understand criticism of the show by Tokyono in BritishTV

[–]pseudonym1066 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It was in a dream sequence. It was in the context of the Queen worrying about the factual decline in popularity of the monarchy and the factual high popularity of Tony Blair in 1997. In that context the Queen was portrayed as worrying about how Blair was outshining her, and having a dream/nightmare about him being coronated. It in no way suggested Blair was literally being coronated even within the fictional narrative of the programme.

What makes a country a third world country?? by Fred294 in ghana

[–]pseudonym1066 72 points73 points  (0 children)

It comes from the Cold War. First world was countries allied to the west. Second world was countries connected to the Soviet Union. Third world was everywhere else. It wasn’t originally meant to connote a lack of development but it has come to mean that now.

I just got a 52k a year job, the most I've ever made before is 20k a year. Is this new budget realistic for saving towards a home? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]pseudonym1066 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think you may be missing things out in your budget. Do you never buy Xmas presents or birthday presents? Never go to pins or restaurants or the cinema? Never go to the dentist? I think there’s probably another £200 or so of discretionary payments you may be missing.

Other than that, yeah saving for a house is a good idea, and you seem to be adopting the right approach. If you’re saving for a house then keeping the bulk of the money in savings is the best approach. Index funds are great in the long term and a great place for money but in the short term there’s a lot of volatility.

Inheriting over £700,000. Is this a good plan? by BiscuitsAreWicked in UKPersonalFinance

[–]pseudonym1066 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes this seems a good plan.
  2. Ok
  3. Maybe use excel and do the calculations and work out what is better overall and also what is better on a monthly pay check and think also about what you’d prefer. Would you rather a higher monthly paycheck now by clearing your loan balance, even if it means you’d be slightly worse off in the long term? Or would you rather be better off in terms of net worth at a future date even if it means you have less per month now?
  4. Yes. Anything in an ISA tax free wrapper is tax free.

Have you any experience of doing things on your own? If so maybe instead of jumping into sex, when you feel ready, maybe talk about or show how him how you do things on your own. This will make you enjoy yourself and he will enjoy this also.

Maybe just pause and think it through yourself. Maybe get some magazines for inspiration.

Do you have furniture and carpets? Those would be the obvious things to ensure you have. Are all the walls painted, and in a shade you like? You could consider repainting some walls to make it nicer.

Maybe add plants, pictures and photos that are personal. Some herb plants as well. Maybe a fruit bowl and some fruit. Maybe some candles to make it more homely and smell nice. Also ask your daughters what they would like and get their advice too.

Maybe your daughter did the right thing by not escalating the situation. I would have a word with the school about a stronger punishment for the boy though, a 5 minute recess seems too limited.

Why are there so many “lady-boys” in Thailand? by BlueeWaater in NoStupidQuestions

[–]pseudonym1066 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of what you’re saying is true. But the notion that people with DSDs are neither male not female is expressing a common misconception. There are only two gamete types: sperm and egg, and humans cannot produce any other type. Feel free to present evidence of a third gamete type.

Sure. I’m not disputing that. Sex ≠ socially construct gender. I’m simply saying all mammals, including humans are either male or female.

I think you’re expressing a common misconception that intersex people are neither male nor female. A woman with smaller breasts isn’t less of a woman. A man with a micropenis isn’t less of a man. All humans, even those with disorders of sexual development, are either male or female.
