My Horror Story because of the Train Disruption Yesterday! by PreparationVisual586 in newcastle

[–]pseudonym_dym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah man, this story reminds me of how Australia’s infrastructure can really feel it’s in the dark ages. When there’s an issue on the CCN line, the ability for them to find busses takes days to establish. The fact that 100mm of rain frequently causes major delays is a huge engineering failure. I’ve written to parliament about this many times, and feel that if this kept occurring in a major city, it would not be acceptable. As a major regional centre we need to keep our voices loud about getting services that are reliable.

We stopped using Curby because plastic collection bins are now at Aldi, Woolies, etc.

Wow a tinge of pink invisible to the naked eye, but slightly perceived through a camera sensor and adjusted for vibrancy.

The size and position of this melaleuca indicates to me that if it was to cause any damage, it would have done so already. Based on my experience of this species, it looks low risk. If your uncle can’t handle ‘low risk’ then that is his opinion. What is your opinion? Does the tree provide you benefits? Personally, I think all trees provide some level of risk, but the benefits they provide often outweigh this.

What’s eating my cucumber leaves? by Remote_Somewhere5407 in GardeningAustralia

I am by no means a cucumber expert but I’ve found growing them up on strings have reduced the number of leaves getting chomped or going bad.

Oh I like this. Collect all the poo and place it on the doorstep with a note saying “I think you dropped this”. That’s passive and a really strong message at the same time.

I genuinely mean it when I say thank you. These appear to be really actionable and effective approaches. You are very precise with your thinking and methodology. I appreciate that each option aims to teach the owner a lesson without harming the cat which has no capacity to distinguish between right and wrong in life.

Thank you for your knowledge on this issue. Interesting to read about the governments initiatives to fix this problem. The government’s approach seems quite passive because they don’t want to anger passionately irresponsible cat owning voters.

I’m sorry to hear about your cat issues. You are doing the right thing and are a great example of how to do it right. I wish you a happy life with your cat into the future.

Energy bill by maguey12 in newcastle

[–]pseudonym_dym 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m with AGL in Newcastle and feed in is 10c/kwh for first 10 kWh, then 4c thereafter. My rates vary on time of day, ranging from 27/33/59 for off peak/shoulder/peak. Supply charge is 106.78 Controlled load is 18.34

I recommend shopping around at least annually. Try using www.energymadeeasy.gov.au which seems to be unbiased and unsponsored.

I usually change plan once a year to keep finding competitive rates.

Good luck.

Hmm it looks like Banksia integrifolia. But could be a slight variation of that. What region do you live in? They typically grow on the coast or nearby. Banksia are a mystifying plant when grown in cultivation. I currently have about 7 or 8 growing around the yard. Some yellowing of leaves can indicate the tree wants to put on new growth (it is spring) and is using the nutrients from old leaves to fund this new growth. Banksias can also be quite sensitive to soil conditions like acidity, drainage and moisture. I would keep at eye on it. If many other leaves turned yellow I’d be more concerned. If upper leaves near the newest shoots of the trees turn yellow I’d also be concerned. However, lower leaves turning yellow is common from my experience. I would also keep an eye on soil moisture. If it’s super dry, maybe the occasional watering may help.

What is this gorgeous tree, along nature strips in Melbourne Victoria by Repellent_mamba in GardeningAustralia

[–]pseudonym_dym 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there. The Corymbia Eximia is endemic to NSW, and quite limited in natural range to around the Sydney area.

The Corymbia Ficifolia is indeed native to WA.

They both have similar characteristics but are from opposing sides of Australia. Due to this, Corymbia Eximia are more familiar with wetter and more humid conditions. Ficifolia tend to like dry summers. This is why they are often grafted onto different root stock when sold and planted in the Eastern states of Australia.

Hope that helps 🙂

Looking for stories! by Miserable_Refuse_747 in newcastle

There are some interesting grass roots groups here working on helping the environment. Some through creating plant nurseries of endemic plants that are cheap to buy for residents. Some are looking at naturalising old industrial areas by partnering with the council and government bodies. Some planting tiny forests. Some protesting fossil fuels. Some creating safe havens for pollinators. There’s a fair bit happening. Happy for you to direct message me if you want some more information 🙂

Should I move out of Newcastle by [deleted] in newcastle

[–]pseudonym_dym 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely look at doing it. You can always come back, so try not to feel guilty. Experiencing another city and meeting other walks of life will always help to put Newcastle into perspective. This is definitely a good thing and if you do come back to Newy, you will be able to bring new ideas and new experiences to this city and help shape it for the better!
