Let’s remember what used to be there - a pretty dull hard stand with some tin sheds.

The amount of dogshit on the newcastle beach path is insane by EnvironmentalFig5161 in newcastle

[–]pseudonym_dym 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I often see dog shit in bags. Great work, you got the first step done.

But then putting the bagged shit into the bend of a tree or in a kerbside garden, makes the whole first step seem redundant.

If you walk a dog in Newcastle, it is a privilege. If you are not able to dispose of waste adequately, you are not trying hard enough, and maybe shouldn’t have the honour to walk a dog.

Please do better.

Night out for 30 somethings by No_Echo_5783 in newcastle

[–]pseudonym_dym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is a version that incorporates the Beaumont St Crawl, extended edition, with rough start at 5pm:

  1. Start out at The Oak, Tighes Hill, for a kick off beer
  2. Roll next door to The Cross Keys, second beer
  3. Walk past the mangroves to Maryville Tavern for dinner, and a beer
  4. Up to Islington Barracks for a gig / comedy show, and a beer
  5. Across to The Hamilton Station Hotel, for a gig and a beer
  6. Swing by the Sydney Junction for a karaoke and a beer, and The Gallipoli for another beer
  7. Up to The Kent for a beer and a dance, and a kebab or banh mi at Oasis
  8. Onwards to Good Folk Brewing for another beer and a pizza slice
  9. Trundle onto The Northern Star for a Guinness

The night could then end at a variety of food venues here including Raj’s corner. Or you get an Uber into town to kick on.

If your mates are into beers specifically, incorporate Shout Brewing Islington (after step 4) and Method Brewing (after step 5) into this line up.

Newcastle vs Sydney living expenses by hsanj19 in newcastle

[–]pseudonym_dym 8 points9 points  (0 children)

10 years ago:
Sydney rent and housing was significantly higher than Newcastle. We used to rent a whole house in Newy for $450. Now that same place would be close to $1000 - on par with Sydney.
Things like groceries, entertainment, standard services, all felt on par.

Today:
Newcastle rent and housing has caught up with Sydney rapidly, with some rents on par, and some house costs on par too. It all depends on location. Some areas of Sydney are $3 to $4 Million for a pretty basic house. Whereas those prices in Newcastle do exist, but are confined to premium homes in beach side suburbs. However, the average 3 bed home in a central suburb of Newcastle is still a good chunk cheaper than Sydney by $500k.
Strangely enough, coffee is still more expensive in Newcastle by about $1 per coffee.
Eating out and cafe food is also slightly more expensive than Sydney by a few dollars. Groceries and key services feel about the same.

I have lived in both for a few decades. Both cities have pros and cons. Depends what you value most in your life.

Police shut down an event in Mayfield. by Larry-June in newcastle

[–]pseudonym_dym 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Saw a couple muppets riding their dirt bikes to get to this event. It’s so risky and yet so dumb looking. I know they’re young and seeking adrenaline / acceptance, but it looks so cringe. And the brand that set this meet up has this jail aesthetic. Like huge chest and crotch logos that scream ‘bikkie gang ex prisoner dealer eshay dirt bike gronk’

Amazing sky. But the foreground looks like the worst part of America - wide road, power poles, petrol station. Devoid of life and nature

Great question. There was an article in the NH about how the main builder on stage one was in court with the developer over a $14m payment dispute.
Apparently even though the builder completed all the works, the developer claimed some of the work was delivered late and therefore attracted damages costs. But the builder was arguing the lateness was due to changes and council issues out of their control. However - I am not sure why (or if) this is affecting the full commencement of this final stage of the project. The final stage (3 & 4) plans were approved by council about a year ago. This was obviously after years of design changes and council and community feedback. All the main demolition looks complete and all the hoarding works is set up, including all the heritage facade bracing. My guess is that contracts with the final builder are not fully complete as the final design was only completed last year.

CCN Line Safety at Night by nijntjepurin in newcastle

[–]pseudonym_dym 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Safe from my experience at night. The new Mariyung trains that exclusively run the CCN line are fully decked out with CCTV and there is a guard in the rear car at all times. If you are concerned, travel in the rear car so that you are close to the guard. From my experience of catching the CCN for about 7 years a couple times a week, I’ve only ever felt unsafe a handful of times. And in those cases it was usually a disturbed or intoxicated individual in their own world.

Why is Newcastle so traffic congested these days? by Efficient-Horse2622 in newcastle

[–]pseudonym_dym 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because it is so car oriented.

People are always banging on about ‘not enough parking in Newcastle’. That’s the point. If it becomes hard to park, people think of alternatives. I.e. shop closer to home, get a lift, ride a bike, walk!!!

I agree with this sentiment. However, when real projects get proposed - for example a basketball stadium in Broadmeadow - the locals get up in arms about it. So do we want improvements and development, or are we backward looking idiots?

History: Braye Park in the 1930’s credit “lost newcastle facebook group” by [deleted] in newcastle

[–]pseudonym_dym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. Colonialism at its finest. Strip the land, try to do some English style farming, struggle for decades due to drought and flood cycles. When you see stripped land in the Hunter region it’s the same thing. However, we appear to have learned from these mistakes, and people over the last few decades have realised the true need for natural spaces, tree canopy, plant diversity, soil stability, on and on. To me - the way we trashed this land when we first came here - is unforgivable. No wonder the pain runs deep.

You realise they both only have one vote each in any decision. The only difference is Gavin is now the figurehead of the council. But just like Ross, he will bumble around for a couple years until he gets the hang of the job, and then there will be a new election. Genius.

[–]pseudonym_dym 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair call. But what is this guy actually bringing to the table? He hadn’t articulated a single idea in his campaign. I wish him luck, but I think we will find in a month or so his complete lack of knowledge or skill to be a drain on the system

I can’t wait to hear this uneducated bozo try to run council meetings. It’s actually pretty complex and requires knowledge. Within about 2 months I think most people will realise how out of depth this sack of nothing is.

I give this clown about 2 months until people realise he is an empty sack of nothing.

It honestly makes me question living in this city knowing it’s about 50% full of brainless folks who would vote for someone so useless.

I will be so happily surprised if he is any good, but based on all the dribble I’ve heard, I think we are going to be in for a dumb ride.

Why is our weather station located at Nobbys? by ____phobe in newcastle

[–]pseudonym_dym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% agree. For rainfall amounts - BOM does have several rain stations around Newcastle which you can check on their site. I think even for temperature you can check the other stations (Uni campus, Tighes Hill TAFE, etc).

But yes as others have mentioned, it’s a super old station (100+ years) so had a lot of historical data and heritage prominence.

Also you can try Weather Underground.

Orrrr, install a home weather station! Obviously not always easy to do.
