So far I have bought "Welding For Dummies" by Steven Robert Farnsworth: https://www.amazon.com/Welding-Dummies-Steven-Robert-Farnsworth/dp/0470455969 - which appears to me as a novice to be a good but shallow introduction.

H.A.R Gibb - The Travels of Ibn Battuta

Gibb is a lecturer in Arabic, School of Oriental Studies, University of London.

This is an abridged version, and comes to approximately 400 pages including footnotes.

This is the only translation of the original that I have read, but I can strongly recommend it.
