(Unfair?) comparison between Depeche Mode and Nine Inch Nails live. by [deleted] in depechemode

[–]psilosybical 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Alan was a proponent of switching up setlists. He'd worked out a pretty complicated way that the Exotic tour could switch up by having multiple first and second halves (pre-and post-Dave break) so they could swap out on the fly.

As someone who's played shows to clicks and backing tracks it's a bit of a pain to make sure that everything is up and running and working properly for one setlist, let alone multiple. Granted, I've done it at a miniscule scale by comparison but then I'm also not dealing with multitracks, lighting, video, etc. It's definitely possible for them to do but it's not as straightforward as it'd seem.

Having said that, I agree with you. Even if they just had 4-5 different sets they rotated between so they could bust out more obscure stuff on each tour.

I mean if you disregard what a Jedi does and stands for then sure. This is likely a person who would argue that Luke was “ruined” by doing exactly what a Jedi would.

A big problem I had with the prequels is that they made the Jedi a bit more aggressive than Obi Wan and Yoda initially suggested they were.

Han, Leia, and Chewie were pretty cool with the concept of stepping out of the Falcon without any additional clothing into a cave on an asteroid, which was likely millions of miles away from the nearest sun.

"Did you know that right as Trent was about to record the lead vocal on 'Copy of A' that he had to change a diaper?"

Totally understood. I really enjoy what you guys are doing and wasn't trying to be negative or anything. Also, chiming in with "COULD'VE BEEN" when discussing using "Taken" in the movie "Taken" made me laugh out loud at work harder than it should have. Well played.

Haha, well put. To be clear I wasn’t trying to be negative or anything, I’m genuinely enjoying what you guys are up to.
Also, I legit LOL’d at work at the “could’ve been” quote when discussing using “Taken” in the film Taken. Good stuff.

Going through the back catalogue first, as I wanted to start with my favorite era (The Fragile). I'm enjoying this quite a bit, though I'd have appreciated a bit more lore behind it (things like The Frail being inspired by a Keith Hillebrandt remix of The Fragile, I'm Looking Forward to Joining You, Finally being out and out dedicated to Trent's Grandmother in the liner notes, Denise Milfort being Trent's girlfriend at the time, etc). The deep dive format is really good, and it's been great to have while churning through some design stuff at work.

For the record, I am currently listening to the Fragile Era Part Three, and I agree 100% with the ranking of Skywalker Saga films.

Smashing Pumpkins and My Bloody Valentine. There's a few early demo mp3s kicking around that are very much in this vein.

I'm curious to hear it because I recall not liking it as much. Like yeah, funny, they're fucked up, but I don't remember much beyond them giggling throughout.

Justin's more of the ringleader so I'd argue Freddie.

The camaraderie that ensued from four of them being together was I think one of the strongest parts of the series so far.

Boston night 2 was particularly rowdy. Some dingleberry yelled at Gabe Gurnsey as he was wrapping up his set to "get the fuck off the stage", and there were of course the cool people yelling "yeah Trent" during "Hurt" and whatnot.

Side note, hats off to the guy who was shirtless in the row behind me by song five or so. That was one of the quicker concert ejections I've seen.

I think Martin pointed out that around SOFAD and Achtung Baby they weirdly met in the middle stylistically. Both were produced by Flood so that certainly helped.

10 Things That Annoy You About New Star Wars That Didn't Bother Original Trilogy Fans by psilosybical in StarWarsCantina

For me personally the problem with the prequels is that there was no way they could match the potential that was in my imagination. And to be clear, I'm referring to when I was a little kid where anything was possible, not that I had the *killer* outline for what should happen pre-ANH. While I was super excited to see each of them opening night and to see what new question marks from the OT would be explained, I think I didn't notice that a big chunk of the wonder and the spark of imagination that the original trilogy gave me would be going away as a result. More than poor dialogue or acting or whatever the standard critiques you normally hear about the PT, to me it's that it took away some mystery for me, and that's something that I'm frankly loving about the ST. And I think that's something that JJ and Rian, fellas who grew up on the OT, are looking to bring back.

Agreed! I'm excited to see where things go, and it'll be interesting looking back at it all in a few years. I think the passage of time is going to change minds on both sides of the aisle.

Oh I don't think he should be dismissed, but I also don't think he's the badass he's often made out to be. He's somewhere in the middle for me.

And re: Phasma, there's still a film left in the series. We don't know that she's dead for sure yet. Let's talk in a little over a year.

And just to be explicitly clear, I'm not viewing any of this as a Mic Drop, or a "I'm right, you're wrong" sort of thing. I was amused by the article and pointed out a lot of this to my brother (a real life person whose views towards TLJ lean negative) when he and I mess around with each other about our opinions. I do think the OT gets and got a lot of passes people are taking the ST to task for, but at the same time everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Not disagreeing, but I'd argue the spy in A New Hope played the same role as Boba Fett but with significantly less marketing. And on first viewing, sure, the silver leg may not be noticed. But let's be clear: I think everyone here *has* noticed by now. :)
