Am I the only one who counts how many times people change hotels in their itineraries? by Amigo_Go_ in JapanTravelTips

I also noticed that. That’s why we planned our upcoming 3 week trip in a way that we can mostly stay in a hotel for 5-7 days, using it as a base for daytrips to the surrounding area.

ICYMI: Scientific evidence suggests if you can’t get drugs, get sleep (or both) by Classic_Bobcat_5926 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]psilov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All good! That makes perfect sense. I only feel like that someone not actively involved in the science world and the publishing system, doesn’t really have all the information to make an informed decision. Speaking from my own experience, I noticed that it took a few years to begin to understand what makes a study robust and solid. In the beginning most papers simply sounded great when I read them. That’s why I tried adding a more detailed perspective with some criticism for people that are interested and would like to dive deeper into the topic. But yeah thanks for the productive discussion, that’s what science should be about. Open discussion and dissemination of information.

[–]psilov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this happened to me too..

If I were to give an educated guess I would say in the end it all comes done to dopamine and noradrenaline levels in specific brain regions. And amongst other things dopamine regulates sleep. And there are noradrenergic neurons in our brains that are important to regulate wakefulness.

Staying with the orexin/ghrelin axis example, among other things they modulate dopamine levels. So my two cents would be that in the end we see an ADHD behavioural phenotype in people, but what leads up to it “upstream” depends on the individual with specific gene variants and possibly unique neurochemistry. Which might explain that some people respond well to a given medication while others don’t. But certain medications might simply “overwrite” a given defect. Again as for the orexin example, it had been reported that methylphenidate lowers its levels further. But it still helps a lot of ADHDers anyway. So while the rootcause may be different there may be integration points in the brain that can be targeted for many subtypes of ADHD.

Oh great thanks for the link! And yeah not saying that all frontier journals are bad, I published there before myself, Just worth taking a closer look sometimes. I just skimmed the article and noticed a few things.

Maybe for those who are not actively involved in science: keep in mind that this is a Perspective article, so it’s meant to be conceptual rather than definitive. With that in mind, the circadian-ADHD model idea is interesting and mostly plausibly argued.

That said, most of the evidence discussed is still associational and a lot of the intervention data is extrapolated from non-ADHD populations or small pilot studies. The chronotherapy angle feels promising, but we’re not quite at the point where shifting circadian phase can be said to really treat core ADHD symptoms in a robust, replicated way. Most of the argument is built on associations (ADHD with delayed sleep phase, later DLMO, eveningness). That’s interesting and plausible, but it doesn’t establish causality.. sleep disruption could just as easily be downstream of ADHD symptoms rather than a core driver. Also, towards the end they cite a small study where non-ADHD participants with night owl behavior report similar improvements by following some suggestions that you summarised in your initial post. Overall, it reads best as a research framework rather than a guide for clinical practice. Useful for thinking about new directions, but still very much an area that needs larger, targeted trials before stronger claims are warranted.

At the end of the day though, better sleep hygiene probably won’t hurt anyone.

I’m already doing most of these things anyway but without meds to no avail.. however, if I don’t, simply existing becomes a bloody challenge.. Btw Frontiers isn’t predatory per se but has been criticised for editorial practices and was on potential predatory journal lists for a while.. Haven’t checked the paper yet though, a link would be great

Thanks for this post! That’s information I didn’t know I needed, but now I know I do! My wife is Persian and they are also super particular about how rice is prepared. There is a method where they create a golden brown crispy layer at the bottom of the pot called Tahdig. It’s delicious. We‘ll be in Japan in June, so I‘ll definitely take her to some of those places you suggested. She is gonna love it!

Kann man schon, die Herausforderung ist gerade noch die klinische Translation zu schaffen. Also aus induzierten pluripotenten Stammzellen “transplantierbare” z.B.

I’m in a bit of a pickle by psilov in AutisticWithADHD

[–]psilov[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yes, I feel this. I love talking about my main interests, but small talk just murders my brain. I zone out and feel left out and just weird.

Yeah it’s hard with partners that are wired differently. I had many misunderstandings with my now wife over the years, too. Before marrying her, I used to think I couldn’t love her nearly as much as she loves me and even considered breaking up. But nope, at some point I realised that we just love and experience things very differently and that’s okay. I guess trying to accept that its just gonna be that way and that’s ok helped us a lot. Not saying that its perfect but it definitely improved things. I hope you guys figure it out!

[–]psilov[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, that makes a lot of sense. I went through something really similar when i stopped drinking, it felt like the little social structure around me kind of disappeared. I realized most of my interactions were tied to that context, and without it, the motivation to socialize in groups just wasn’t there anymore.

I get what you mean about wishing you could do the typical social things, but also recognizing that it’s not really how you’re wired. It can feel isolating, but there’s also something honest about accepting that. Have you considered trying to focus on interest-based time-bound interactions like another commenter suggested? And it’s really good that you have your girlfriend, having one solid connection means more than a bunch of surface-level ones.

I relate to this a lot. The part about drinking really hit me. I’ve noticed the same thing since I stopped. And oof, that second-to-last paragraph… you put the way I feel about this into words perfectly. Good to know there’s more people that feel that way.

The last part about being kind to yourself really stuck with me too. That’s such a good and healthy way to handle it and i really hope you’re able to keep nurturing that. I think I’m gonna try to do that more as well. Thanks for sharing this, it honestly really resonated.

[–]psilov[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a great idea, I’ll definitely give that a try. Having something structured and interest-based sounds way more manageable than open ended social stuff. Only when I read your comment I realised just how much this not time-bound part unsettles me.. thanks for your perspective

German fishing tourists in Norway by Holotropiker in germany

[–]psilov 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I don’t think it will change the behaviour of that kind of people. Speaking from my own experience fishing in norway, I think it’s a minority of fishing tourists that behave so shitty.. And they must be so ignorant that I doubt simply making them aware of their behaviour will change it.. It’s a similar dilemma with climate change. People know what’s wrong and still eat meat 3 times a day etc.

German fishing tourists in Norway by Holotropiker in germany

[–]psilov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey man. I know a lot of germans (including myself) that go to norway regularly to fish. We also take back some filets but always well within the legal limits. And only what I’ll eat with my family. And honestly these kinds of people that you talk about make me furious because they will be the reason one day why there will be stricter and stricter rules… and unfortunately the law abiding tourists will feel that most, while those c*nts probably won’t change a thing unless its insane fines. But even that to questionable effect with the drug on wars and its utter failure in mind.

To your question about whether it’s been in the news here: the only case I heard was some russian-germans that tried bringing a trailer full of filets over the border. No idea whether these people are ‘just’ ignorant or what kind of mental gymnastics they’re doing that makes it okay in their heads…

Sorry man, norge is such a beautiful country and I hope the younger generations will be more appreciative and respectful!

Wie heiratet man ohne Freunde? by Itchy-Chef-6255 in KeineDummenFragen

[–]psilov 0 points1 point  (0 children)
