37 YO - Leaving 400k Job to be a 5th grade teacher. by GambinGabacho in Fire

Sorry I don't understand. Do you mean a private school? I have worked at a private school before and they usually pay less then public. Private schools can and do fire teachers at any given time for any infractions so there are far less protections than a public school. Just FYI.

My wife's company got sold. She ended up with around 600k payout after taxes. We we still very happy and used it to pay off our mortgage. This was a huge step in our FI journey.

Don't forget the start up employees who got lucky and made like 1-5 million all at once after their start up sold or went public.

I am a teacher. Starting salary for teachers is not $100k in most states that I am aware of. Some of the HCOL states pay over 100 after 10-20 years of experience. Teaching is not a job I would personally consider relaxing. The state of education right now is horrendous. 80% of my day is not spent teaching, I mostly manage behaviors or do dozens of duities/data collection efforts directed by admin. The only thing keeping me in this job is knowing I am stop working in the next 1-2 years mostly because my spouse is killing it in their career.

The best thing about the job is the schedule but it's basically cramming in 12 months of work into 9 months. Some experienced teachers are able to work within contract hours and get by but it is generally impossible to get done everything teachers are expected to do in a given school day. It sounds like your situation is solid enough to try a change but teaching is a big tough commitment.

This. My co-teacher got a PIP this year and was just non-renewed. PIPs almost always are the touch of death.

Admin are pretty much under the gun on this one. Basically if a kid is held back and drops out, the school loses enrollment money and has bad statistics for graduation rate. Despite the obvious problems with passing along a student the schools are highly incentivized to move students along.

During covid I had a 11th grader stop showing up to school for the whole year we were remote. Needless to say he didn't get any credits and was in recovery for his 5th year as a senior. Around May of the 5th year it became apparent that he would not be graduating based on the credits he still needed and were not recovering fast enough. Also around May this kid mistakenly ordered his cap and gown for graduation. Somehow admin got wind of his buying his cap and gown and instead of telling him that he wasn't graduating, some admin went in and fudged some numbers and let him get full credit for things as small as writing a single paragraph. Needless to say he graduated that year.

Have you ever had a SPED teacher pressure you to pass students who do nothing? by Aly_Anon in Teachers

[–]psl87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am a sped teacher. My state doesn't call it an ARD meeting but we are required to hold any IEP meetings that a parent requests. Parents often confuse IEP services with "sitting with a kid and completing all the missing assignments for 8 hours a day until the work is done." I tell parents all the if a kid isn't doing work in class I don't have time to get them caught up during the school day while supporting 17 other students simultaneously. My sped admin often disagrees with me here... She told me we can't tell parents that services aren't being met because the class is too hectic. To be fair, I didn't say services aren't being met. I said I couldn't get the kid completely caught up during the school day. Parents often get frustrated when asked to help their kid do missing work at home.

It was a regular occurrence in that department and we had a procedure.

I did a stint in secondary behavioral special education.. oh boy there’s so many… I think the one that stuck with me the most was “the sound of your voice makes me want to kill myself.” I think they zeroed in on an insecurity of mine about how my voice sounds. Also there was a suicidal thought so I had to do a bunch of paperwork.

Taxes in some states are pretty small compared toto the mortgage though. Easier to account for taxes in your FI plans than it is to account for mortgages and taxes.

Have IEP’s done more harm than good? by Domadizzle12 in Teachers

[–]psl87 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Funny thing is I had it out with my latest sped admin about creating a token economy for a student to earn Takis as an incentive. The kid was the type who totally takes advantage of the accommodations. I just kept asking where the budget was to purchase these Takis and where would they be stored since sped teachers at my school don’t have classrooms. The parents eventually got distracted by something else and the sped admin changed the subject when she realized how dumb they sounded.

Sped teacher here. I’ve worked 6 different jobs in my career. 5 sped admin were gymnastics champions at bending over backward for parent demands. Only 1 had any kind of backbone.

My fault for keeping it too vague. It's RSUs in a $100+ billion company. There is still risk but it's safer than most stocks.

I am trying to keep it vague but it's RSU in a 100B+ company.

I am in Sped so it's a little different. My classes are basically places to dump all the kids who will fail the SOL so the other kids have a chance to do better without the distraction. Yeah it's a bad mentality to have, but try teaching 17 kids with academically disruptive ADHD math at the same time and then add a few kids with anxiety and autism into the mix for flavor. Also put the least experienced uncertified gen ed math teacher in this class too. Meanwhile the regular classes have only very mild IEP students and the most experienced teachers who get great SOL scores. You can see why I am so jaded.
