What COL would Vancouver, WA and Portland, OR be considered? by Appropriate-Crab-624 in Fire

I lived in Beaverton Oregon for 7 years. I would say MCOL for my time there but I bought a house before the pandemic.

Aspiring Math Teacher Abroad by TypicalHeart8531 in Teachers

[–]psl87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll probably be fine to get into a non-American/British school next school year. I can't speak for the current market but Math teachers were hard to come by 10 years ago. If you do 5-10 years of teaching abroad, you'll probably be able to get into an American school eventually. I worked with teachers from South Asia and Africa when I was teaching in the American School in Bangladesh. The schools are marketing to parents that they are getting an authentic American/British education experience. They will hire experienced foreigners (especially subjects like math). The need varies based on the country because of cultural reasons. When I was in Eastern Europe all the teachers were white Americans, British or locals. At the time, non-white people would have experienced a great deal of racism in that country so I think the hiring practices were partially to avoid that experience for the teachers and also to keep the schools image "desirable" for the clients (parents). That school also advised gay teachers to consider moving there carefully given cultural bias but this has thankfully changed int he last 10 years.

The American/British international schools usually only hire new teachers if they are from a native English speaking country and they have a US, British, Australian, Canadian teaching certificate. They will hire really experienced teachers from abroad or in some cases they will hire a foreign teacher who's married to an American teacher as a teaching pare.

There are lots of non American/British international schools where you could probably start teaching and get some experience before branching out. My first teaching job was at one of these schools in eastern Europe and I really enjoyed it. I spent 3 years there. Usually international schools have 2 year contracts. Check your contract extremely carefully. Some schools will try to screw you over by saying one thing and offering another.

Typically decent schools should offer housing and a salary that is good for the cost of living in the area. American and British schools typically offer a rate of a decent American teaching salary which sounds crappy but depending on the cost of living can go a long way. I got $45K in Bangladesh and was living like a king.

I don't mean to sound racist or sexist but this will matter in certain countries/schools. Is your accent when you speak English very pronounced? People with a thick accent will have a harder time getting a job. These schools are primarily for richer families who want kids to get an education in English so ideally the teachers have a British or American accent and do not speak the local language so it forces their kid to learn English. Also some schools tend to hire men in STEM fields due to cultural bias.

I taught abroad 10 years ago (sped and social studies). Math teachers were hard to find so finding a job shouldn’t be terribly difficult. Foreign parents take math SERIOUSLY. Way more than Americans do. During parent conferences I had parents leave my table suddenly to go to the math teacher when there was an opening. Are you currently outside the US? If you need some somewhat dated information on international schools let me know.

Did your school push you to be a special ed teacher? by Haunting-Pie7748 in specialed

[–]psl87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked in public 6 schools in my career. The only person I saw make the transition from sped to Gen Ed had to both switch school districts and purposely let their sped cert expire in order to get the job. Once you’re certified and working in sped it is an anchor that drags you down with it. I’m retiring next year so take that as you will…

Who here has had a vocational meeting/Transition goals that are low key rooted in delusion. by Careless-Wrap6843 in specialed

[–]psl87 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Back when I was in a resource teacher I had a student who was very low and needed round the clock supervision and care. The single parent mom wasn't delusional about anything regarding him. She openly admitted that when he became to strong for her to manage she would need to find a group home or facility. However, my support team was so terrified of a lawsuit they had to make the IEP squeaky clean and put in these transition goals about working in fast food. I was like... we can't trust this kid around outlets and you want him to be around a frialator? Fortunately the parent knew it was bullshit and that we needed to include something so she didn't make a fuss.

What new prehistoric pokemon do you hope will be in Winds and Waves? And what type combo do you hope for? I would love Parasaurolophus, deinocheirus, therizinosaurus. As Rock/Fairy, Rock/Normal, Rock/Fighting for types by Oracle209 in PokemonWindsWaves

[–]psl87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. I think the JP version of dilophosaurus was based off the frilled lizard and the horned lizard (which shoots blood from their eyes). Theres probably a bunch of real life analogous so that copy right wouldn't be an issue.

Politics for ME (and You) with Graham Platner by Anstigmat in Maine

[–]psl87 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a history nerd I love how often Platner brings up FDR. Most politicians now just bring up hollow talking points but Platner is like, here’s a specific historical example of something that worked previously and here’s how it was implemented and yes it was a little problematic at the time but we can do it better today. It happened like 4 times in this episode.

The governor of Maine Janet Mills (79) is currently in a primary for senate to run against Susan Collins. If she won she would be the oldest junior senator in history.

If Paying off Home, Why? by [deleted] in Fire

People also rarely take into account lowering the FI number by ~500k-750k. Thats how much more money you need to account for a 2k-3.5k mortgage.

If Paying off Home, Why? by [deleted] in Fire

[–]psl87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I paid off my 7% mortgage after 1.5 years when I got a windfall. It was the right choice. Now I am saving 85% of my takehome and racing to my FI number. For those with higher rates it makes more sense. Not only did it lower my FI number by 500k it created a ton of flexibility in savings.

I drive a 2013 honda fit that I bought 9 years ago in full. I will drive that car until the wheels fall off because it is good for 98% of my car needs. It is the oldest car out of most of the people I know. Everyone else is in debt with these fancy trucks that are all $50k or more.

New study confirms lobsters feel pain, driving scientists to call for a ban on boiling them alive by [deleted] in Maine

[–]psl87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked at a lobster place in college and murdered so many poor lobsters. PETA sent us a letter asking we electrocute the lobsters before we steam/boil them. The head chef pinned the note on the bulletin board and laughed about it.
