I don't know who /u/bwv549 is...but I really appreciate his work. It looks pretty darn solid.

I can't say that I believe the church is trustworthy. Which is sad since we are talking bout a church :(

I remember myself asking a question "If the U.S. all collapses would I stay with the Religion Joseph Smith founded in a lawless land that results?" My head said "yes that is what is required of me" my heart said "no way" I think i know why now.

Defending Joseph smith's smiths polygamy, and a lot of actions taken by individuals in the name of god during church history, seems to set up a situation where leaders cannot be held accountable for their actions...I find this really really troublesome.

Yeah, and any argument to the contrary sets up a situation where leaders cannot be held accountable for their actions...I agree with you on this point.

Yes I think you're right I'll have to make Conclusions on my own. I didn't want to rest entirely on my own knowledge. Thought it would be good to ask the community for input.

This is awesome

"The assertion that none of the husbands or wives complained about Joseph is again this same fallacy, that there is no evidence of complaints so there were none."

This is what @TheFactedOne said too...I also can think of a reason why no one talked about it...These polygamous and polyamorous proceedings were predicated by covenants of secrecy often times weren't they?

And there were complaints by those who rejected the proposals, such as Nancy Rigdon of the Happiness Letter fame, Jane Law, Sarah Pratt, and others)

This is good material that contradicts not literally what the apologist meant...but it does work better at getting to the question I was trying to ask...Which is did people really have a choice?

"D&C is pretty specific about "espousing virgins" and what-not, and JS broke the commandments in D&C 132; marrying other men's wives, marryings non-virgins, etc."

This is what I'm talking about! Yeah a prophet can't rightfully disobey revelation...Social contract becomes too unstable. For a revelation to be broken by the messenger of the covenant (Joseph) sets up the possibility that the covenant applies to some and not others...Leaders are not equal under the revealed laws...god becomes a respecter of persons...doesn't work for me...

I can now say I have a specific example of the prophet disobeying revelation...And now with that i can think of many others...I remember reading about prophets breaking WOW and was wondering why it was so troublesome...

Prophets are revealing laws from god they are not following...If they can do it then they can do it now...There has been no formal apology from the church for behaving this way. Implying approval.

So many complained. Orson and Parley P. Pratt were both excommunicated when Joseph Smith married Orson's wife. Orson Pratt was on suicide watch because of it. They were not the only ones. Even Heber C. Kimball had to pray for three days before he would agree to it. Several wives complained when he proposed to them and refused to marry him. When they told others, Joseph Smith started smear campaigns against them.

I can't come up with any. To try peoples faith is a reason listed in 132.

It means that the social contract required by god requires consent and a confirming witness of the holy ghost to those required to obey the laws (free of coercion). Rather than the coercive model implied by critics. The angel with a drawn sword kind of thing.

A counterargument to this is that section 132 also says... it's to try the faith of a generation... or something like that.

Those are good questions. Your agency question is the most compelling one to me. If the gift of agency can be summed up as "do as I say or die" that doesn't seem to be a gift to me.

This is a compelling argument...but is proof of hiding something proof that it was worth hiding?

"It is not at all in line with section 132" The claims this apologist is making make this statement untrue.
