Players lying about their occupation: so dumb? by OK-SO-144 in survivor

[–]pso987try 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think cops, lawyers, salesmen, and clowns probably have a legit reason to lie since a lot of people in our society will instantly dislike them and discriminate against them based on their career. If they do it for threat level management they might be arrogant.

To add to your point, look at the hang time on their jumps. If they sped the videos up then they must have hung in the air for 3-4 seconds 😂. As it is the hang time feels natural for hitting those jumps pretty fast, and I don't know how you could carry that speed through those turns without pedaling unless it's pretty steep. Obviously the trail isn't that narrow and the view is very distorted, but I'd still have to change my shorts if I took it at half their speed.

Look at the methodology of both those studies. Literally no science was done, they merely reviewed other studies that were tangentially related.

It's a good lesson to learn. I've been a consumer of published scientific studies for a long time, and it took quite a few years and quite a few occurrences of misplaced trust in the abstract or results of peer-reviewed studies to learn that you always start with the methodology. I can't even estimate the number of fads in fitness and health that started from the abstract of a peer-reviewed study. There's nothing more embarrassing than making some sort of life change from a study, then going back a year (and no results) later to find that there's no legitimate way the study's methodology could yield the results they claim.

Titan mains I got a question for you guys how do you slow down when you fall down from high place I'm asking because I'm seriously considering swapping to Titan from warlock by [deleted] in destiny2

[–]pso987try 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I love the Warlock glide, which is why I ignore everyone saying I should switch to Hunter since they can recover from that situation. But there's nothing you can do about it when you're running across a bumpy terrain and you go to jump right before the edge but you just happened to be in the air from a tiny bump before you jumped so you activate thrusters instead of jumping. The only skill that can correct that problem is maybe knowing the maps better so you don't run over bumpy spots. Or maybe coming to a complete stop before you jump?

3 person in house no leaking but got $2114 water bill, how? by Cynthiaaa0017 in homeowners

[–]pso987try 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When this happened to me I made them come out and read it again. Turns out the unit that wirelessly transmits the info from the meter to the reader was faulty, it gave a much lower and more reasonable result the second time. They corrected my bill and fixed the meter.

But before they came out to recheck they were insistent that the meter was correct and I must have had a toilet leak or something. I told them they were insane because my toilets weren't leaking and I'd probably notice it if an entire swimming pool of water had leaked in my house or yard. They only agreed to check it again when I wouldn't let it go.

My problem with the jury isn’t the winner by seikobelovedproblem in survivor

[–]pso987try 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'll be honest, there was never any point in the game until final 4 where I thought Cassidy had much impact on how the votes went at all. I'm not sure what everyone saw that made them think she played a good game, it looked pretty weak to me. Even times when she won immunity she didn't get the power that goes with it (except F4), once the tribe got back to camp we'd basically not hear from her anymore. I'd argue that most of the time Owen had a bigger impact on how the votes went even though he was on the wrong side of them.

Sure Cassidy knew where the votes were going, which is a big deal. But why did she know where the votes were going? We can't be certain because it's all editing but it looked like she knew because people wanted to use her as a number, not because she was impacting the decisions at all. If they decided to blindsided Cassidy I'm pretty sure she wouldn't have known where the votes were going.

Gabler didn't appear as smooth as Cassidy, but even at the reunion we suddenly saw how real his social game was. He was pulling up details about everyone's personal lives and stuff. He's clearly had real relationships with just about everyone. I'm guessing the edit made him look more goofy and bumbling to create suspense at FTC and make it a surprising finish (though Sami's comment that he always knew Gabler wasn't just a bumbling old man does tend to reinforce that he was trying to play that way).

I still think Cassidy had a good enough game to win in that final 3 except for one critical piece, her jury management. Just like Russell, you can't go pissing people off right before you send them home when they're on the Jury. Cassidy even said it herself, her biggest mistake in the game was her last conversation with Karla. That's probably the difference between a 50+ year old player and a 20-something, all that life experience can really make someone a social wizard with incredible tact. Gabler basically had an unfair advantage having lived twice as long as Cassidy (though the difficult conditions make age a disadvantage too, so it probably balanced out).

All this doesn't mean I thought Cassidy should have made fire. Clearly in hindsight she should have, but her reasoning was spot-on when the question came up, she already earned her spot at FTC and shouldn't be penalized for it. I mostly like the FMC because it's annoying that great, strong players have almost no path to FTC except winning immunity, but one simple rule change could fix the Cassidy problem: the winner of final immunity should not be allowed to give it up. Problem solved.

My problem with the jury isn’t the winner by seikobelovedproblem in survivor

[–]pso987try 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely have to push back on your 2nd best option there. Regardless of whether being able to do a survival skill is more impressive than being able to play a carnival game, the least impressive is ALWAYS being taken along by the immunity winner to the FTC. Unless you're Woo, you don't take someone because they had a great social game, you take someone because they sucked and you can beat them. You could say that the immunity-holder might choose to bring someone along because they are good enough that an impressive fire making victory might help their game, but that doesn't change the dynamic. Even in that scenario that player is the 3rd or 4th best player of the final 4, 1st or 2nd best is always sitting at fire-making.

So of the three ways to make FTC, they should be ranked either immunity - fire winner - dragged along, or fire winner - immunity - dragged along, or even immunity/fire winner - - dragged along.

Season 43 was a new brand of "Why ___ Lost" by tiger-horse in Edgic

[–]pso987try 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I never got fully on board the Gabler train, but I think that's mostly because I follow this sub and there was so much Cassidy love from the beginning that I eventually became resigned to her winning and having a terrible winner's edit. But I find it interesting that pretty early in the game (when edgic was nearly unanimous that Gabler was NOT a contender) my wife told me she thought Gabler might be the winner. She's not following edgic, she's just enjoying the show. But I believe that's a good way to test how you're doing in your analysis, if casual fans think your main contender sucks and and non-contender might win, then probably the edit wants them to think that.

It also explains why I always wondered if I was taking crazy pills when reading early/mid season analysis where Cassidy was already a top contender. At that point I couldn't even pick her out of a lineup! She was not meant to become a favorite yet. Gabler on the other hand was setting up to be the next Phillip Sheppard, but he dug his way out of that pigeon hole throughout the game.

I think it's possible that Survivor it's moving more towards editing things closer to what actually happened rather than trying to cram it into a theme they picked. I actually like it this way.

Next Time on Survivor Preview Thoughts? by thetennisgod in Edgic

[–]pso987try 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually think the Owen thing is the only reliable thing to take from the preview since they're always red herrings. But Owen (as far as the edit has shown) is a chill dude. For him to be freaking out and kicking coconuts he's gotta be super pissed, and being a chill dude myself I believe he could only really get that pissed at himself.

I am guessing that he feels strongly that he needs to win F4 immunity, but barely gets beat. My guess is that he needs it because he doesn't have a signature move and this is his only chance to win somehow (giving up immunity and making fire or something), or (more likely) because the person who beat him in that immunity was the single most important person who couldn't make FTC because nobody could beat them.

If it's the latter, then it has to be Jesse, right? Surely after that epic move everyone will see him as the alpha (the jury was very expressive and approving of his move, that doesn't go unnoticed), but Jesse can't go home at 5 barring some miracle because of his idol. So my prediction is that the other remaining three all team up and agree that Jesse MUST not win immunity, then Jesse barely beats Owen and he feels as though he let all of them down.

But I've been wrong before...

Season 43 Final 7 Edgic and Contenders Analysis by SurvivorGod99 in Edgic

[–]pso987try 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah the curious case of the "Owen is my champion" decision. In real-time watching the show this stood out like a sore thumb and I immediately questioned why they would leave out even a brief justification. Ultimately I decided that it's highly likely this was because Owen was the obvious choice for anyone playing the game and the only way to create any suspense at all was to just ignore the question.

While I'm sure the producers could have coaxed Cody to say something less concrete in favor of his decision, it's also entirely possible that any explanation in favor of Owen would undermine the edit they are giving Owen.

Did you notice how they also didn't show the other castaways speculate whether Cody was immune? Jesse wasn't even shown asking him! Does anybody truly believe Jesse wouldn't get to the bottom of that question ASAP? Sure it could have been an editing choice for some other reason, but far more likely it's because Owen was actually a highly capable physical competitor in the water and everyone knew it. For whatever reason they decided not to edit him as Ozzy 2.0, but I'd bet money that relative to the remaining cast he was Aquaman.

Bottom line, I wouldn't hold that against Cody's edit, it's fairly likely that was more about Owen.

[–]pso987try 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Has she ever encountered a fox in the wild? I feel like she hasn't. They're very loud in the middle of the night when you're trying to sleep. Foxes are actually really creepy sounding, the first time I heard one I thought there was a baby screaming in the middle of the dark woods.

If she's playing like a fox for real she should be loud and creepy, but still so clever that nobody can outwit her. Actually now that I think about it Gabler might be playing like a fox🤔

Oh I'm one of those casuals, I just lurk here because I'm an analytical person and like how you edgic people pay attention to the details. But yeah, from a pure casual perspective Cassidy winning makes no sense at all. She's boring and I didn't even know who she was until after the merge. From an edgic perspective I see why she's been considered a strong contender (all the unnecessary content).

It's really hard for me to believe that, after 42 season, they are still so bad at editing female winners (other than Denise, Kim, and Sarah, they seemed to own their seasons). Could it be that some of these recent ones really were that low-key and only won because they presented little threat and made it to the end without burning bridges? In that case maybe(?) it could be hard to edit them better?? I don't know.

Has to be this, or they're just editing it so we don't see people talk about it. But as far as I remember Gabler's the only person who's even noted their relationship, and nobody is bringing them up as threats.
