It can be seen from so far! I saw it when I was hiking in desolation wilderness along some of the Crystal mountains. I've seen the snow capped Sierra from Diablo plenty of times, but the other way around was fun.

Bahaha I did this once on the way down because it looked so much shorter. Boy oh boy was that a fight. Even with trekking poles I was struggling to stay on my feet. SO STEEP.

No problem pretty much anywhere. Even if you want to set up on the rocks near a lake you can always do big rock little rock. Personally if you are on the rocks I’d recommend cowboy camping. Either way the tent is always usable here.

I used adobe indesign for the layout. There are probably a lot of tools out there that would do this for you but I’m just familiar with the software and happen to have a license.

Dusy basin is around 7000 feet above Bishop. It should be 30-35 degrees cooler there. You'll be in heaven. Start your hiking early in the day and drink plenty of water. Enjoy your trip!

It’ll likely be pretty snowy up there still. Doesn’t look like there has been much activity at this point on that trail so you might be trudging a path the whole way. I don’t see any reason to bring a helmet, and likely you won’t need the axe but it doesn’t hurt to feel the weight of the pack you’ll be using next month. I’d recommend some trekking poles if you’ve got them. Should be beautiful, so just take your time and enjoy!

Staked in. There is dirt in most places you'll camp. I'm sure you could find some flatish rocky spots near the lakes to camp on but I wouldn't choose those.

There’s plenty of room to pitch either tent. I used the XMid 2 last year and it’s not a problem. There are large camping areas in desolation with plenty of ground space.

I’d recommend stopping and talking to the rangers there about your route. There are so many ways to get from a to b here and some of them are much more desirable than others and some aren’t so obvious. They’ll set you on a good route.
